Campus Crusade for Christ drops ‘Christ’ from the title

The Blaze reported this morning that “Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC) — the popular, large-scale Christian organization — has decided to make a major change. In early 2012, the multi-faceted para-church group will officially drop the name it has held for 60 years, replacing it with a three-letter word — ‘Cru.’” Glenn baffled by the name change, and spent the opening minutes of the radio show mocking the cowardly change. “There’s somebody who came and did some things and you should know about them. We won’t tell you about them because they might be offensive,” Glenn joked. “The three-letter word CRU. Great. Hey, everybody, let’s join the rowing team.”

    Hi friend. I am afraid that I can’t agree with you there. In the old
    testament believers didn’t even dare say the name of God. It would raise
    serious questions about Cru in my mind if they chose to go by the name
    Christ. For that matter it would raise serious questions in my mind if
    any organization decided to go by the name Jesus, God, even Lord, the
    last of which like Christ isn’t a name, but a title (it means messiah).
    So you are fine with Cru removing those words with their name, and you
    want them to call themselves Christ? Come on now, really?

    Also Cru never took Christ out of their name, they changed it. If they
    took Christ out of their name, then they would just be Campus Crusade,
    or Campus Crusade for literally, but that doesn’t really make sense. Cru
    is a name that has been in use since 1989 at the University of
    Oklahoma. After that in the 90′s it spread across the Southwest and soon
    thereafter became a common name for campus ministries on colleges all
    over the US. There really isn’t a removal of anything here, just a
    formal change to the name that is already in use. When Cru started to
    look into the name change, the plan wasn’t to go with this name, but to
    try to find the best name that we felt God wanted us to go with at this
    time, however I have written more about that here in other comments.

    I could go into many facets of what really happened but I have already
    done that in the comments here, if you really want to look into that
    your welcome to look into my past comments. I could  also share with you
    what other Christian leaders like John Piper and other organizations
    like the Navigators and Intervarsity have said in support of this, but I
    assume that you did better than Glenn Beck and followed the Biblical
    principle of looking into this before commenting, so since we clearly
    aren’t going to be changing the name of this organization to Christ, can
    we move on?

    But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that

    witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And
    if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a
    Gentile and a tax collector.

    It looks like what we have here is a bit of conflict. The Bible says a lot about dealing with conflict.  The gist of it is first when there is a you go to the source. Have you been there yet http://www.ccci.org/about-us/donor-relations/our-new-name/? Since you came out of the gate with a paraphrased quote from Jesus (which was interestingly in quotes) I assume you are a Christian, but because of what the quote was I also assume that you are unfamiliar with the situation, so have you talked to anyone on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ about it? Have you talked to any students involved in Campus Crusade for Christ.

    Second it escalates. It says to take it to the church. So if you visited our site and it said we were ashamed of Christ, if you talked to those of us that work with Campus Crusade for Christ and we said we were ashamed of Christ then by all means, you should be contacting well know pastors, posting your communication with us online. Bring some accountability to us.

    The thing is though, if you were familiar with our organization you would know we aren’t ashamed of Christ. If you worked with our organization you would be familiar with the reasons why we changed the name (hint, it had nothing to do with the name of Jesus or the title/office of Christ). If you read the first several hundred posts before these on this site you will read responses from people who give their gut reaction, assuming that what Glenn Beck says is the story, but you will also hear responses from many students, staff, and supporters of Campus Crusade for Christ shedding light on the real story. This is why people such as Louie Giglio, Tim Keller, and John Piper have shown us their support during this time of transition, as well as our friends with InterVarsity and The Navigators.

    Thanks for your concern, that people are worried by a broadcast such as this from Glenn is reassuring, I just wish he would set the facts straight.
