I know you all like to focus on the fringe aspects of OWS because it validates your belief that the movement may lead to a dangerous step in the wrong direction.  However, I urge you to keep an open mind.  Unless you’re in the wealthiest quintile, American capitalism is failing you, Grover Norquist is failing you and, yes, Glenn Beck is failing you.  There need to be serious reforms and regulations in the tax code and in the financial investment sector, as well as major tax hikes on the incomes of the wealthy.  Disagree?  Then take a look over American history and decide which era produced the greatest degree of prosperity for all Americans.  It wasn’t the Roaring Twenties or the Reagan Era, but the postwar 1950s and 60s, when union membership was at its highest in history and the wealthiest Americans were taxed at or above 75%. 

Essentially, you have two choices; you can continue as ideologues in a broken system which allows the wealthiest investors to profit immensely from booms and busts, or you can adapt to the demands of 21st century capitalists who demand a greater degree of stability in the market and in society at large.  Quite frankly, I don’t think that’s a “dangerous” or “violent” request.

I think you’re failing to grasp who the OWS movement is targeting.  The ideal endgame for this movement is to reverse the severe concentration of wealth at the very top.  Such a concentration of wealth makes real democracy impossible.  Unless you’re in the top 20%, you’re not a target.

Listen buddy, I don’t know who you think I am or what I stand for, but I have a job and I support myself.  I worked throughout college and graduated in the spring, but guess what, there aren’t a whole lot of companies looking to hire anyone, let alone someone with little experience, so more gainful employment is almost entirely off the table. 

The reason so many young people are frustrated isn’t because they feel entitled to a great job in their field, but because they had pounded into their heads that college was the only way to succeed.  Now that they’ve graduated with a mountain of debt on their backs, they’ve been forced to take the very same jobs that don’t require any sort of degree (the old line “You don’t want to be flipping burgers your whole life,” ironically, tends to resonate).

Let me ask you, did you go to college?  Did you saddle yourself with thousands in debt because your trusted elders told you it was your only option to succeed?  My educated guess is no, since anyone with a decent head on his shoulders would realize that this movement isn’t about getting something for nothing.  It’s about fairness, stability and transparency in the financial markets.  It’s about establishing an equal opportunity for education regardless of your financial status.  But above all else, it’s about reaffirming the legitimacy of our democracy, because when so much money dwells at the top of a population, dollar-votes reign supreme over people-votes.

P.S.  Class warfare is on whether you like it or not.  The wealthy know it and the educated masses know it, considering the wealthy have been attacking the middle class since the 1980s.  This conflict is essentially a powder keg and the fools who listen to these AM radio demagogues have continually stamped out the fuse, but the fuse is running shorter and shorter.

Since the idea of currency was born into society, no single person has ever earned their wealth on their own.  That is an absolute fact.  There are laborers who, while replaceable and interchangable, have been shortchanged for decades by a tax code which heavily favors the wealthy; where, I must ask, would the wealthy be without productive and reliable labor? There are roads and other public infrastructure which were paid for by the tax paying collective that allow the so-called “producing class” to move their product from point A to B.  There are public schools which educated many of these “self made” men and women, also paid for by a collective.  Many universities also receive a great deal of tax payer support.  Therefore, I tend not to buy the idea that any one person’s wealth was ever earned without the support of our national collective.

You know, up until the 1950s, the USA’s official motto was E pluribus unum, “Out of many, one.”  Since then, it’s been “In God we trust,” which was a essentially a knee jerk reaction to “godless communists” and a clear (but mostly harmless) violation of the first amendment.  My point is, however, that we need to revive our sense of unity in America.  Do you think the wealthiest Americans care that your car has broken down or your house has been foreclosed on?  My guess is no.  However, your neighbor likely does, regardless of his political leanings.  The distribution of wealth in the US is near “banana republic” levels, making real democracy an afterthought and your vote next November essentially worthless.  This is not about liberals and conservatives anymore, it’s about prosperity for the great majority vs prosperity for the small minority.  You can stick to your ideological guns if you like, but it only hurts everyone in the long run.

You can ignore these problems for as long as you like, but this country is in dire economic straits going forward.  Dollar votes trump people votes and that is a fact.  The only way to stop it is to recognize the problem and take steps to fix it, and your self interest will lead to ignorance.

First, I never said that I was a member of the OWS movement, but I tend to sympathize with some of their core ideas.  I think taxing the wealthy is paramount to economic recovery, since trickle down economics is quickly being exposed as a grift of epic proportions.  Also, the financial sector needs meticulous regulation to keep bank collapses such as Lehman Brothers and MF Global from ever occurring again.  The fringe elements of OWS disappoint me, although they don’t necessarily surprise me.  Some people are basically rotten, whether they’re “occupying” Wall Street or running Wall Street.

You’re here for vigorous debate?  Because from the looks of this and other pages, I’m the only person who doesn’t worship at the altar of Reagan.

First of all, your status as a soldier doesn’t exempt you from criticism, no matter how unreasonable it might be.  You chose to be a soldier and there are a lot of people who disagree with the percentage of our annual budget related to military expenses. Furthermore, I tend to reserve my unconditional respect for soldiers who were uprooted involuntarily and served in circumstances far more dangerous than you ever saw.

Second, which point of yours was I meant to counter?  Was it your “$h!t happens” theory?  Or was it the part where you agreed with me that it was those with big money, which have been bribing our lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for decades, who sent us into recession?

I suppose I can counter your point that the American economy is the “greatest economic engine” in the world.  Certainly, the American economy is the largest single economy in the world and everyone knows that.  However, I have to call into question its stability and the chances that it will remain the largest economy in coming decades.  First, many economists predict that the Chinese economy will surpass the US in GDP by 2020.  Additionally, if the Eurozone manages to weed out some of their more toxic members and subsequently decides to add Turkey, they might then have the second largest economy and the most desirable currency.  Obviously, this isn’t great news for the US, as it endangers the status of the dollar as the standard reserve currency.  If countries begin to use the dollar less and cease to buy US bonds, the potential for the value of the dollar to crash is much higher than anyone should be comfortable with.  Certainly, none of this is going to happen tomorrow, but I don’t think it’s prudent to wait to take action.  Interestingly, lots of companies have large sums of money sitting around that could be invested tomorrow, which would create an awful lot of jobs in the short term (and hopefully the long term).  Like him or not, we’re stuck with President Obama at least until January 2013, and I suspect sometimes that these companies are holding off on investing until their Republican candidate assumes office.

I think that the US economy has the potential to remain the strongest economy in the world, but it also has the potential to run itself off a cliff.  Considering a great percentage of the wealth lies in 20% of the population, the actions of a few consequently dicate the actions of the many, and the facts seem to suggest that the affluent few are sitting on their thumbs.

The structure of the government would be somewhat similar to what we currently have.  The legislative branch would consist of two chambers, and a good percentage of the procedural rules would remain intact.  However, all seats would be up for election every two years in both the House and Senate.  There would be a one term limit on every seat, with an exception that would allow a legislator to be re-elected if he won the popular vote with a supermajority (I’m thinking around 66-75%).  This would give those with aspirations of being career politicians the incentive to compromise in order to satisfy a broad base.  Conversely, legislators who want to stand their ground on principle can do so without worrying about re-election.  Ultimately, this would bring perspectives from those on the far left and the far right, with a moderating centrist influence tending to dominate the discussion.  In the event that the electorate is dissatisfied with their legislature, they could dissolve it through a referendum and a new legislature would be elected within three months. The members of the dissolved Congress would still be eligible for reelection. I would also disallow rider amendments, which tend to obstruct legislative process.

The executive branch would remain almost entirely the same, although I would prefer if controversial executive orders were placed under a sort of expedited judicial review by the Supreme Court.  These reviews could be brought on by Congress as well as appeals by lower courts and legal scholars.

The judiciary would also remain similar to what it is now, although I think the length of time one can serve on a single court should be limited to twenty years.

Clearly, most of my problems reside with the legislature.  The process needs to be more fluid and conducive toward getting things done as opposed to moving at a snail’s pace.

First of all, I’ve had the same job for over two years and I never said that I didn’t have a job. 

Second, you asked me what my perfect vision of government was and that’s what I gave you.  I know that there’s miles of red tape in the way.  Also, I think our constitution is severely outdated and that the British had it right when they refused to write their a constitution down on paper.  The constitution should be a living document that adapts with the times.  Either that or, like Thomas Jefferson said, there should be a revolution every couple decades to keep the powers that be on their toes.

I’m wondering if anyone out there remembers what happened to the pro-life movement when they tried to peacefully protest the killing of pre-born babies back in the ’70′s.  I remember well how they were treated and finally the movement was ended because the government used the RICO law to hit them with heavy fines and long jail terms.  This law was written to stop inter-state racketeering that would shut down businesses but was twisted so that peaceful demonstrators were allowed to be prosecuted by it.  Maybe some of the businesses that are having to lay off workers or are closing could look into this.

we are blessed to have you with us. it took one of my friend year at a low point to find god. he had a proplem were his arms and legs would not stop moveing i forget what it is called. anyway he was at the point were he wanted to kill himself. they sent him away to a hospitl to stop him from killing himself. odd thing is the same time he let Christ into his heart he felt the hand of god on his back and was healed. it did not happen since that day.

if you took away all the occupiers cellphones and electronics they would have to go home.and to tell you the truth us the tax payers are the 99% occupiers are 1%.

Actually many times have been declared dead.I was aware everytime.You do realize they don’t talk about what’s actually going on at the moment?
Freaked them out repeating their conversations back to them.
God or his agels definitly have been placed in my path over the years…..I think it was to help people at the right time and place….I get calm in crisis’s, this helps.

lest one of his messagers showed me that i needed to change. i do not know what he see in me or what i need to do with my life. i just pray to him what ever your will is in my life may it be done and leave it up to him.

I pray I recognize His message to me,and that I respond to it…as I’m more of the warrior mentality, I apply  what I know in this vein…then there’s the side that placed me in the posistion to assit people when they needed my help. Mostly my voice,where ever I am to wake people up,seems to be getting the most traction.

He is the Goebbels of this generation, garnering hyper-inflated supported based on a mass of deceit. Living in the south, it’s hard to escape this sort of rhetoric; claims of the “anti-christ” and “communism”. Get real. Don’t be fearful, because humanity is not bogged down by mortal claims of god’s will; humanity is not something to deny or stifle; Glenn Back has sold his humanity and his integrity.

I think what you’ve failed to realize is the sacrifice the majority of these people have made to be involved, to truly stand up for what they believe. Don’t discount that. This is what REAL integrity looks like.
