Rick Santorum had to leave the campaign trail over the weekend in order to attend to deal with a family emergency as his daughter was admitted to the hospital. She has now been released, and Santorum called into the radio show this morning to discuss the incident as well as tomorrow’s Florida primary.

Santorum explained that his daughter “rallied and she’s on the mend, and we’re feeling very, very blessed. I want to thank everybody for their prayers.”

“A simple cold can kill her and it almost did this weekend, and she ended up with pneumonia as a result of a cold and a whole laundry list of things went on,” he added.

Santorum’s daughter has Trisomy 18, a genetic disorder, which impairs a child’s development and has led to an early death.

“She was able to get great care yesterday and really made a great turnaround and she’ll be out of the ICU today. We’re sort of getting back to normal here.”

Santorum also discussed the letter that was circulating among the Catholic community this weekend, saying that it was “about time” that people stood up against government encroachment on religion.

“When we look to the government to give us rights, then we’re in trouble. Rights do not come from the government. They come from God and when we start looking to government to give us rights, then they own us and this is exactly the case in point right here. They now have you and they’re going to impose their view of morality on you. Since now they are the ones who gave you this. They are the ones that can dictate how this right act is exercised,” Santorum said.
