I hope the locals picket the union halls and accuse them of terrorism, after all, they picket at the drop of a hat. Give them a taste of their own medicine.

Dear Carole,,Not ALL of us who have been in Unions are bad folks. I have been in Labor Unions since 1966 & my last ,,the Transport Workers Union (local 100) has 'Struck' or went on Strike & stopped NYC cold,,,but,,,BUT we NEVER got Violent. We Bus Operators & others needed the union to Rep us when 'Bosses' would bring us up on 'charges' they thought they could get away with. Are they Perfect?? Hell NO !! But without them,,many a Good Bus Operator,,who took care of his passengers 24/7/365,,would have been fired for Mickey Mouse reasons.
I DO agree with you on the points about Union THUGS,,,& I hate them TOO. My Union disliked me most of the time,,but not all,,,because I am a Conservative ,,who votes Republican. I am also a BIG fan of Glenn Beck,& what he stands for. I also agree with YOU abut workers having the right to a NON-Union shop,,as this is STILL the USA & we should ALL have CHOICES.
Happy New Year to You & Yours from a Retired TWU Line Steward.

I am aware of a local airport where a hangar and ready/crew facility was under construction. The size of the project was not huge. It included a steel hangar structure for housing two search and rescue helicopters. Union types visited the site several times during daylight hours and threatened the General Contractor (non-union) and subs to get rid of the non-union steel erector sub and hire union. Then, over a weekend, someone poured acid all over the horizontal members already in place for the hangar, making them structurally useless. All the steel had to be replaced and re-erected, which delayed the project and added substantially to cost. The City was the owner, so the taxpayers were ultimately the ones who paid the price. That was my first exposure to union thuggery, and it clearly hasn't gotten better. In almost every instance I can think of, Unions have outlived their beneficial lives. They had a beneficial role once, but that was long ago.

Darn gutsy to attack a bunch of pacifists don't you think?...
Incidentally, this was my father-in-law's crane that was torched, and this is not the first incident the business has had with the union. My husband has had rocks thrown at him from union protestors on the ground below as he walked 30 feet above on a slim steel beam. Should I even mention the other more subtle sabotages that were meant to go undiscovered until something tragic would happen? Can you say attempted murder?
This incident has added an incredible burden to a small family business of father and sons doing their level best to stay in business despite a horrible economy. My father-in-law has pulled his business through before, and I believe he'll do it again. The union won't destroy him.
Thank you Mr. Beck for mentioning this story -- I understand that traffic was disrupted on some major streets in Philly by police and fire but oddly enough it doesn't seem to have shown up on local new stations...how strange. We have no confidence that anything significant will be done here, but we appreciate your taking the time to bring it to light.

No doubt--you and I have seen it and Philadelphia has paid for it. Having lived for nine years in the neighborhood in which the new building is to be located, and as a Town Watch coordinator, having had regular contact with the Northwest Detectives unit, I can tell you that is a dedicated unit that goes after significant property crimes with vigor. One of the City Council representatives who is appalled by this action,(and would be a go to person to push the DA's office) lives in the vicinity--the status of his working relationship with the current DA is unclear; both are likely to run for Mayor in the next Democratic primary (2015). Both would need support of municipal workers unions; but neither need the Ironworkers.
