Which one of those politicians mentioned taking away your right to own a gun? NONE of them. You are upset that they are discussing not allowing everyone to have the ability to have every WMD at your disposal. Is is really just envy that fuels your insane gun grab?

Gee. Technology could be used for good (curing cancer, sustainable energy, feeding and hydrating the masses) or to make killing machines. Seems this Cody person has enough smarts mixed with enough mental derangement to use technology to harm. I do NOT think this is what the Founders had in mind.

No doubt it is interesting, but there are some people who believe you can work miracles with it, and the companies that manufacture this equipment and techies who developed the process are not doing anything to dispel the speculation and mythology.

It could be used to make dimensionally correct parts that could be used to make investment cast steel alloy parts, but I am doubtful the actual item could be made as easily as just printing it and having a working firearm. Modern gun manufacturers use investment casting for pistol frames and other parts like hammers and slides. The current state of the art firearms have hammer forged barrels, and that is because of the pressure retaining properties of that kind of construction.

I guess that would depend on on what the powder is made of, if it were composite, it may work nicely. In the end, I am not saying this technology is “perfected,” but it is quite interesting.

Okay, what kind of pressure can graphene contain? The range of common handgun cartridges from far exceeds the capacity of polymers. Assuming that graphene would have to be combined with a polymer resin to be used in a 3D printer, (probably not currently available in today’s state of technology), regardless of the strength of the carbon nanotube material’s strength, the chamber and barrel would suffer catastrophic failure almost immediately.

Common handgun caliber chamber pressures

.22 long rifle – 24,000 psi
9mm luger – 35,000 psi
38 Special – 17,000 psi
357 Magnum – 35,000 psi
44 Magnum – 36,000 psi

There isn’t a polymer of any type that can sustain this
kind of pressure load, and that is a fact. The mythical plastic gun just isn’t practical or safe to fire. At the current level of man’s technical achievement it isn’t possible to print a working firearm, unless of course you don’t mind eating the resulting shrapnel.

Coincidentally, comments like yours here historically preclude revolutionary advancements in technology. Graphene R&D is picking-up major speed on a global scale. Combine this with projected short-term advancements in 3D-printing and just imagine the possibilities: I could print a paper-thin skin-tight bullet-proof flexible body suit and become Batman.
