You're correct in mentioning that the Bible, in particular the Old Testament, mentions tithes. In modern times though? I don't know if 10% across the board will be enough. I'm fond of the flat tax idea, but in our current state, I think that reform of our current tax system without being too crazy about it is a better plan than implementing the flat tax. Possibly in the future! And Jesus has said a good number of incendiary things towards the rich as well; he encouraged a good number of them to give to the poor and not concern themselves with their material wealth. I can look up the specific chapters and whatnot if necessary, but he was very explicit when he preached that the poor had easier access to eternal salvation because they were often more spiritually rich. At the same time, apostles; in particular Paul called for succor and support for the poor. In 2 Cor. 8:13-14, Paul states that the system is supposed to go both ways as to avoid dependency and to create equality; Paul also preached, and I agree with the idea, that the poor who are receiving the benefits should be able to pay back with labor. Too many times, this does not happen in this country. All it takes is seeing ONE person using an EBT card to buy Red Bull to put a sour taste in your mouth. Having worked around and with people who are in the system, I can honestly say that there ARE abusers, but the majority are ashamed that they aren't working. The majority are ashamed to be on assistance because there's a lack of dignity to it. I'm glad that I've never had to be in one of those programs. We could do more to encourage folks to work; to get more people into the job force; because getting them to make money turns them into consumers and consumers bolster the economy; when put simply.
