Mark Burnett’s “The Bible” blows away its competition

The mainstream media and much of what we see in our culture today would lead you to believe that most Americans have lost touch with religion, and that the Biblical principals that used to be so fundamental to the majority of people in our nation were long outdated. Don’t tell that to the 13.1 million viewers on The Bible last Sunday on the History Channel.

Mark Burnett, who already has hits on each of the big networks five nights a week, created the show with his wife Roma Downey. Given their success in the business, they were surprised when they couldn’t get anyone to pick up the series. They ended up going to the History Channel.

Pat points out that the History Channel audience isn’t exactly huge, a big primetime show for them would be maybe two and a half million — maybe a little more for some of their more recent programming. For example, “Pawn Stars” got around seven million on it’s biggest night.

“Here’s what they did on Sunday night,” Glenn started, “14.8 million viewers. To put that into perspective, that’s “American Idol”. That’s a big night.”

The American Idol finals, in it’s BIG days, was pulling in around 20 or so million viewers.

“That’s unbelievable,” Pat said.

And Glenn believes they’re just getting started with ratings like that. He has seen the next week episodes in advanced and explained to listeners that it only gets better.

“It is the best Bible thing I’ve ever seen.  It covers the fiery furnace.  It covers John the baptize.  It covers Jesus going into the boat, and cast your net.  It is — you’ve never seen anything like that,” he said.

Glenn predicted that by the time the series gets to the birth of Christ, they’ll be in the range of 20 million viewers.

“It will have momentum because it gets better,” Glenn stated. ”Much better, and in the end, all of mark’s shows have been number one. In the end more people will know him for this movie, this is Cecile B. De Mille’s 10 Commandments. This is the landmark Bible movie. It is unbelievable by the time you get to the new testament it will leave you breathless. Breathless. The third episode will leave you breathless. So if you haven’t watched it yet start, and tell everybody you know. This has a chance of being a part of that revival of the third great awakening.”

Amazing. I missed the first show though due to our cable system going on the fritz; the blasted company still has intermittent service so its going to be hit-miss at this time to see the rest.

14.8 million viewers, excellent, and we can expect the leftist-MSM to come after it with guns blazing to condemn and trash it as ‘radical, extreme conservative Christianity teaching lessons of hate.’

History channel sucks now! Pawn Stars? Lumberjacks and secret history of UFOs such as Hitler was in league with the aliens, wtf is this bullshit and now the Bible?! Yeah, like there is any historical evidence for Moses, Jesus and the rest. They are great tales of fiction but that’s it.

Impressive. That’s right up there with “The Big Bang Theory” and “Modern Family”, the most popular sitcoms at the moment.
It’s not that unusual though. Look at the huge numbers that turned out for “Passion of the Christ”, and the massive sales of the book series “Left Behind”.

This sort of stuff works, and there would probably be more of it but for two reasons:
    1) Hollywood is a very liberal place…and willing to put their agenda ahead of even their desire for profits.

    2) Advertisers covet the young. To them, one 18-24 year old is a more lucrative target than 10 older people.

There are mountains of historical evidence for the existence of the people in the Bible.  Did you know that there are over 5,000 Greek manuscripts that confirm certain New Testament historical claims?  I will give you one example.  The Bible claims that the entire world went dark from about noon until 3 (Israel time) on Good Friday.   There are several non-biblical accounts all across the Mediterranean in different locations at the exact same time of people having seen the cosmic phenomenon.  These people didn’t have cell phones, they only had corroborative accounts.  Astronomists have since concluded that there wasn’t an eclipse during the time of the crucifixion.  There has to be another explanation.  The next most reliable texts come from Homer’s The Iliad, with about 650 findings.  My source?  A book called “The Case for Christ” by Lee Strobel, a lawyer and former atheist.  Page 60 and page 84-85 are what you are looking for.
This is like trying to deny that the Super Bowl didn’t just happen.  There are so many witnesses to the effect of Jesus’ life that you cannot possible deny his existence on this earth.  In a thousand years, no matter how many people try to deny that teams called the Ravens and the 49ers played in a thing called the Super Bowl, it simply happened and you know it.

    Yeah, ok ‘Skyler’.

It’s cool to have an opinion.

But thousands of years might have you beat just a little in terms of wisdom.

Now, I know that based solely upon your comments that you haven’t read the Bible (odd to criticize something you know nothing about), but I would suggest opening it some time (which ofcourse I know you won’t do, because you and your ilk are expert bomb throwers, but certainly are too proud to discuss anything rationally).

There are many prophecies inside its covers; yet I find the inarguable prophecy of the Return of the Israelites to their land (via covenant with God) to be one of the greatest parts.

Come back when you know something.

Do you know that 43 ancient writers wrote about Jesus? That includes 11 non-Christian writers. That’s more ancient books than there are about Tiberius Caesar, the Roman emperor during Jesus’ time. So who are you to say there is no historical evidence of Jesus?

  • Rob Lungren

Do you believe Aristotle or Plato are mythical as well or historical people? There is actually way more historical evidence for Moses and Jesus than either of those. Wither you believe Jesus was the son of God is up to you but to say he is a myth just shows you have not taken the time to educate yourself before speaking about what you don’t know.

Personally I found The Bible full of eroneous information. Left out major parts of the story of Abraham, the exodus. It was very trying to finish watching with so much misinformation. It is apparent to me that Mark has not read the Bible, if he did he has not the slightest idea of the  meaning in the scriptures. Glenn you have been a favorite of mine for many years, and it hurts me to see you taken in by this production. It is full of half truths and lies. I watched most of it—Abraham had another women and a child, then when he and Sarah had a child, Sarah became jealous of the other woman and the son, Abraham sent the woman and the son out into the desert because of Sarahs jealousy, (that is supposed to be Christian?, rather nasty).  Then how about the 7 plagues God is supposed to have sent against the Paroah, but many innocent people suffered as well.  Abraham almost killed his son because he had to prove himself to God, yet God is supposed to know all—I had to turn the program off, lots of curelity, did not like it.

Unfortunately, for those of us who watched, hoping for a visual vehicle to propel us into “the next great awakening”, as Glenn so states, we were left shaking our heads. Although beautifully and artistically shot and produced, the writer of this script has no concept of the spiritual meanings of the old testament. Truths were changed or left out entirely. Events were not depected as stated in the WORD OF GOD.This is nothing more than a reader’s digest version of one of the greatest gifts given to humanity with error thrown in to boot. This was a great Esther moment that was thrown away. I will continue to watch in hopes that this is not a trend, but I have to say we were sorely disappointed. If it cannot be done correctly, then don’t do it at all. The error only does harm.

Exodus 21:16 anyone who kidnaps another and either sells him or still has him when he is caught must be put to death.

Leviticus 19:29 29 Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.
Deuteronomy 15:12-18 12 If any of your people—Hebrew men or women—sell themselves to you and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free. 13 And when you release them, do not send them away empty-handed. 14 Supply them liberally from your flock, your threshing floor and your winepress. Give to them as the Lord your God has blessed you. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this command today.

16 But if your servant says to you, “I do not want to leave you,” because he loves you and your family and is well off with you, 17 then take an awl and push it through his earlobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your female servant.

18 Do not consider it a hardship to set your servant free, because their service to you these six years has been worth twice as much as that of a hired hand. And the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.
Gee what has any of this has to do with slavery? Since when did slave owners let go of their servants when the asked to become so called slaves to pay off debt? That right never because it was not slavery numb nuts!

You must have read a different version than myself.  All I see in the Bible are ordinary fallible people.  As for those “things that we are only supposed to believe,” well again, you have the right and power to believe whatever you want to believe.

Yes, the Bible was “written” by man, but through divine revelation.  It is not intended to enslave, but to liberate.  Those who believe that its purpose is to enslave are the ones who choose to not believe and look for ways to disqualify its truth.

I challenge you to live your life in accordance with the 10 Commandments and abide by the wisdom found in just the Book of Proverbs and then tell me the Bible is simply a fictional work of or about some mystical spirit in the sky.

This series is only 5 weeks so its impossible to cram every story to its fullest in those ten hrs. I agree with the fact that it did jump and skipped many important aspects but look at this show as a visual support for the bible not so much a full synopsis of it. Maybe the success of the show will allow for more productions as this one to really get down in detail of every story which they are all powerful. We have to start somewhere and prove a point that people would watch this material. I am pretty sure that Mark would have loved to show more but once again its just a highlight of the bible.

  • Alan C

Daniel, I believe that, like the written word of God (The Bible), those who watch the production simply for the literal interpretation and not the underlying truth, will be disappointed.

There are many places in the Bible where the authors differed on the actual sequence of events or how those events played out.  What they did not differ on was the underlying message or lesson being revealed.

I felt exactly as you until I sat back and actually thought about whether the “message or lesson” being revealed was different.  I can’t really say the “meat” of the presentation was erroneous.

I also believe that many who condemn Christianity rarely explore “the word” for substance, but for inconsistencies (as they see them).  What they see as inconsistencies are simply a statement of their unwillingness to seek or understand the message being presented within the context of historical or cultural content.

  • Alan C

Have you never made a mistake in grammar, spelling or sentence structure?  Why the foul and demeaning language?  It really reflects another truth found in the bible … you will know them by their fruit or out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Using language like that only reveals the darkness in your heart.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff8jDkOHp3U&feature=youtu.be Sam Fisher

Wow isn’t that the most backward view of the Bible I have ever seen. Paul disagrees with you.
    Romans 8:1-17
8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[b] God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.[c] And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[d] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of[e] his Spirit who lives in you.

12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[f] And by him we cry, “Abba,[g] Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

And your belief that the earth is only a few thousand years old, when in fact it is millions of years old, oh, and how about your belief about the Ark, two of each critter in that little ark.  Read the history of the church, the priests were the only ones who could read and write, they kept the average man stupid so that they could rule them, remember the Spanish Inquestion.  The church had to have the good (God) and the bad (devil), they could blame all evil on something (devil) so they didn’t have to explain any facts, only beliefs.

So you admit that there is a God.  Where was God during the Hollocost?  You’re referring to the actions of men, not Gods.  As far as the earth being thousands of years old or a billion years old, God doesn’t measure time in mans terms.  Let me point you to the discussion being held right now by scientists, it’s called “The Big Bang Theory” and no I’m not referring to the TV show, “First there was nothing, then BANG there was everything.  Now that sounds like the creation of the universe to me.

If you don’t believe in God, that’s just fine but to this very day, no scientist has proven that there’s not a Creator.  When you come up with some definite proof let me know.

The Big Bang theory has been around for a long time, did you just discover it?  I don’t know if there is a God or not.  You said that I was “referring to the actions of men”, then why do christians pray to God when they are either sick or in trouble, according to you it probably won’t do any good if it is caused by the actions of men, that seems to be your explanation of why God didn’t help all of these millions and millions of people that were put to death by cruel rulers.  It isn’t God that refers to the earth as being around 3,000 years old, it is the religious leaders, they are wrong as they are with many things they try to pass off on the public.

The Bible was written by man and is used to enslave?  My how you have it ALL wrong, lol.  The Bible was written by man INSPIRED BY GOD and is used to FREE us and show us the path to TRUTH and RIGHTEOUSNESS.  Abraham WAS a holy, good person.  How is he not, lol?

  • Anonymous

You ask where was God in all those tragedies?  I will answer that simply.  God was EVERYWHERE mourning over those tragedies.  There’s this thing called FREE WILL that even God can’t interfere with.  There’s also this beast called SATAN you might want to do some research into, lol.

  • Anonymous

God cannot change the actions of man.  He gave us free will for a reason.  As for your assertion that the religious are wrong about the age of the Earth, I ask you this.  How old is the earth?  And please, don’t give me that 4.5 billion years that science gives us.  ALL the methods science has used to date the earth are even less accurate than the ways the religious use to date the Earth.  Radiometric dating cannot actually be used to accurately measure how old something is beyond a few thousand years.  NO ONE actually knows how old the Earth is beside the one who actually created it in the first place.  So, you say the religious are wrong on the age of the Earth.  Well, I’m not going to argue what the age of the Earth actually is because I don’t know myself.  However, I will counter that scientists don’t actually know the age of the Earth either.  NO ONE on this planet knows for sure the age of the Earth unless they have been on this planet since the beginning.  Good luck finding that individual, lol.  Is the planet a mere 6,000 years old?  I don’t know.  It could be.  It actually IS plausible.  Is the planet 4.5 billion years old?  Again, I don’t know.  It could be.  That actually is plausible too.  They’re both theories that NO ONE has actually been able to reliably prove or disprove.

  • Anonymous

Actually, as a Christian, I actually DO know for a fact, that the Bible was written by man through divine revelation.  There could be no other rational, logical, plausible explanation for its accuracy but through divine revelation.

  • Anonymous

Uhm, since the vast majority of archaeologists and historians world wide have agreed to its accuracy I’d say, lol.  You do realize that throughout all of history since the writing of the Bible, historians have pretty much totally agreed to its accuracy, don’t you?

  • Anonymous

Wrong.  DEAD WRONG.  The earth is NOT in fact millions of years old as you claim.  The earth is in THEORY millions of years old.  There is a big difference there son.  There really is NO fact on the age of the earth one way or the other because NEITHER side can reliably prove or disprove either side’s claims.  Also, the ark was far from small, and according to most actual historians, there was more than enough space on it for 2 of every KIND of animal.  It didn’t carry 2 of every species of animal.  Just 2 of every KIND of animal.  And according to the vast majority of all historians and even mathematicians who calculated the actual space of the ark, there was well more than enough space on it.

Also, no.  The priests were NOT the only ones who could read and write as you ignorantly claim.  Just about everyone could read and write to a degree.  Problem was, the Bible for a long time was not written in common language.  Yes, the Church was corrupt.  But that has NOTHING to do with the Bible, lol.  Now you’re blaming the Bible because of ignorant and arrogant Church leaders for the corruption they brought to the Church.  Hello.  News flash.  That was centuries ago.  Some of our greatest minds in history have come from that very same Church.  Minds like Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Pascal, etc.  I could go on and on with some of the greatest thinkers in our history who were persecuted by that exact Church but still remained Christian to their dying breath.  Corruption of the Church did not cause them to waiver in their belief in the Bible and the God who inspired the men who wrote it.  You know why?  They were rational, logical men who realized that the corruption of one body of individuals does NOT in any way corrupt the overall message given from the Almighty Creator.

Also, scientists do have a pretty good idea as to the age of the earth–they take plugs out of the coastal rock formations, rings of huge trees, bones of dianasours that walked the earth long before Christ, there is a lot of sicientific evidence–the bible is wrong on the age of the earth, what else is it wrong on?

I have posted a reply to you at the begnning of this blog, as I couldn’t reply directly to you.

I can reply to this blog–Abraham sent his son and the sons mother out into the desert because of the jealousy of his wife Sarah, you think that was a decent, good thing to do?  The priests of old used the bible and religion to enslave the masses, they alone could read, they were powerful, as the ability to read and knowledge was being consumed, their power started to wane.  Some religions are pretty bad, Islam, they believe they should stone their women for being raped, keep their woman covered in ugly clothing, yet the men can dress up, there are a lot of religions that enslave the people.  You don’t know that the bilble was inspired by God, that is what has been taught to you by the priests, how come there isn’t any editions to the bible, isn’t God inspiring bible writers anymore.

Actually no. The priests of old did NOT use the Bible and religion to enslave the masses. To even make such a claim shows total ignorance on your part. The priests of old used the Bible and religion to spread the Truth, Love, and Righteousness that is God. There is a difference. The priests who really started corrupting it didn’t come about until much later. Get your history straight there.

And YES, I actually DO know that the Bible was inspired by God. It’s the ONLY rational, logical, plausible explanation for its accuracy. It’s not what has been taught to me. It’s just the ONLY plausible, rational, logical explanation. And you seriously ask why there aren’t editions to the Bible now? Seriously? Isn’t it obvious? The Bible is COMPLETE now. There is NOTHING to add to it. It was finished with Revelation. NOTHING more need be added as there’d be no point when God’s Word is already finished. You seriously have a lot to learn about Christianity, lol.

As for Islam, I care not about it. Islam is a FAR cry away from Christianity.

Finally, if you really think Abraham sent his son and the son’s mother out into the desert because of Sarah’s jealousy, you seriously have no clue about context. If that’s what you gathered, than you clearly have absolutely NO clue what you’re even reading, lol. Try reading the Bible in its PROPER CONTEXT for once. Try opening your eyes to its proper context rather than being totally ignorant of the subject matter.

My saying “the priests of old” didn’t set a time, you are just using sematics, the priests were more corrupt in the middle ages, but what angered Jesus to run the priests out of their temple?  The average person could not read or write, there were some that could no doubt, the priests were the ones who definitely could.

The segment on Abraham in the movie “The Bible” showed Sarah being jealous of Abrahams first born, and I do recall from my days when I went to bible studies that this was indeed a fact, except of course sarah told abraham to ask God, yeah right, God told abe to send the kid into the desert, you can believe that I don’t.

When someone starts using words not condusive to his argument, he has lost, goodby.
