I'm at Rockwall High School, and all the teachers hate it, we have to take a CSCOPE test in each class about every there week, and in the begining of the year my Biology teacher would complain about how they would keep giving him the lesson last minute, and he would walk into 1st period not knowing what he was teaching till he picked up the CSCOPE packet... Non of my teachers teach it word for word, thankfully, but they do overwhelm all the students with worksheets, one of the other biology teachers barley teaches and just gives out worksheets and barley explains what they are learning.

falconjt, Catholic schools are held in equal disregard here in Texas, if not more, than public schools. Don't ever think that those who wish to kill the public schools are on your side. They're not.

Vanessa, the CSCOPE critics in Texas would like nothing more than to stop Texas kids from reading original source documents. The critics are particularly in fear of most of the Bill of Rights, especially the First Amendment. They wish the entirety of Article VI of the Constitution would be repealed. Lincoln's Cooper's Union speech gives them the willies. Madison's Memorial and Remonstrance gives them apoplexy, and the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom, which Jefferson wrote and which was passed on the strength of Madison's petition, positively makes them swoon.

They malign "progressives" because they think the women in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory probably got what they deserved, especially the "undocumented ones," and truth be told, they are nervous about letting American democracy work, and so favor repeal of the 17th Amendment, turning control of the U.S. Senate back to U.S. corporations (what could possibly go wrong?). Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech sometimes gets a pass, because they think Bryan was talking about Jesus's crucifixion, and not getting the U.S. off the gold standard (again missing the point about letting corporations run the government, and willing to let corporations run the economy to the disadvantage of farmers, workers, and anyone not filthy rich to begin with).

And if you pin them down in debate, they'll confess they think the progressives' campaigns against child labor hurt the economy, and campaign against child abuse violates a mythical Biblical standard that allows parents to beat their children, "for the children's good."

It's funny, almost. CSCOPE was Texas's in-your-face answer to Common Core. It turns out most Texans opposed to a common canon of learning in the U.S., are really just opposed to education and learning. Stupid peasants are easier to herd, you know, and rarely stand up for freedom.

Josiah, those bent on "taking control of the next generation" probably would start a campaign of calumny -- false charges -- against good, patriotic teachers, condemning them as "Marxists" and "socialists" and "indoctrinators" and "brain-washers," all contrary to the facts and evidence.

But if we can shatter the foundations of American education, as Jefferson and Madison noted, American democracy cannot long stand.

They'd do what a lot of people on this thread are doing, Josiah. Including you.

Whose side are you really on?

historyharper, you should come see teachers in Texas. The one you describe is unique in this state -- if she even exists.

Here in Texas teachers are conservative, flag-waving Americans. They skip over Marx when they can, preferring the drama of Patrick Henry, the stoic example of George Washington's calm patriotism, and the brilliance of Thomas Jefferson's renaissance-man life.

They couldn't name a "crony" of Marx, and if such a crony were pointed out to them, they'd put that crony on their fecal material list.

You should come to America, come to Texas, and see for yourself.

Dorothy said:
Normally, if both the Federalist Papers and Marx is discussed, the teacher will sway her/her political opinion over to favor Marx and make our Constitution or Fed Papers to seem outdated...it's brainwashing..

Dorothy, it sounds like you live in the Soviet Union. What you describe rarely happens in the U.S.

For example, here in Texas, the average teacher is a young, Texas-bred and Texas-educated woman, probably Methodist or Baptist, but with a few Presbyterians, Catholics and Pentacostals thrown in; devout Christian, Republican-voting conservative.

She would no more indoctrinate in Marx than she would give poison to her own kids (who attend the same schools). If you go to her home, on the 20 days a year the U.S. flag should be flown, it's up. Heck, she flies it all weekend on Memorial Day and Labor Day, too. Her home library includes books mushy about the Declaration of Independence and the glories of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. She's never read the Communist Manifesto, and doesn't plan to do so.

You slander hundreds of thousands of Christian, Texas teachers.

Please check the facts -- why don't you volunteer to help out in a Texas school and see for yourself?

Are you even in Texas?

This is why there is no enumerated power for a Department of Education in the U.S. Constitution. We need to return to the wisdom of limited government or we will soon be so ignorant that we won't know how to spell the word for the totalitarianism that we'll be living under.

Homeschool. "Aren't you concerned about socialization for your kids?" "As a matter of fact, yes, that's why we homeschool!"

There are plenty of opportunities for kids to socialize outside of school where you can pick who they're socializing with. If you're unsure you can handle it, there are many support sites and huge numbers of people who homeschool who'd be ecstatic to help a 'new convert.'
