I will watch them as soon as I have time to avoid interruptions from other people; this is one series I want to see from start to finish.

I was floored when “Satan” made his appearance channeling Barack Obama channeling Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars.  (May the farce be with you…)  Then Leno found “Herod” channeling Chris Christie!  I would’ve saved the Christie look-alike for a different role, something more to do with kissing and betrayal.  (How’s all that post-Sandy $$ BO promised to the Jersey Shore working for you?)

When I  was younger the National TV stations always had programs of the birth of Jesus at Christmas and the Crucifixion at Easter.  So thrilled to see the Burnett’s courage to produce the Bible series and the History Channel airing it.  I am so tired of the national stations having silly cartoons replacing the real meaning of Christian Holidays.

Having watched numerous Biblical productions, I must say that this is, without a doubt, the WORST production I have seen! Full of glaring inaccuracies & omissions, a cast consisting of some of the ugliest people on the planet (tho their “Jesus” is nice-looking enough), the lack of acting skills, & poor production quality, I watch it only out of a morbid fascination with how awful such a highly touted & advertised program could actually have made it onto ANY network! I really expected more from Ms. Downey……,what a truly horrible disappointment! Even my mother, an incredibly devout Catholic, agrees that it’s the worst she’s ever seen.

And to think that NBC *comissioned* “Amhal And the Night Visitors” in 1951.

Since then, on our watch, some things have changed for the better but many things have changed for the worse.

It’s been a pretty decent mini-series. It’s great that a channel outside of the usual religious ones took a chance on it.

    Glenn,
There are 66 books in the Bible. Not 40, not 30 or even 4 or 5–66 Period. They are there for  a reason. If God had wanted less he would have done it. If He had wanted to omit scripture or add scripture He would have done it. He didn’t!  If people are willing to accept a lie for the Truth then as noted in the Bible God will turn them over to a reprobate mind. He will harden their hearts and leave them to their own desires. “Give them ears that they may hear and eyes that they may see”  The end times will produce many false prophets and teachers and many people will be decieved. They have itching ears and will listen to anything that pleases them and is in agreement with what they want to believe instead of what God says.
This TV series IS NOT biblical. It is false and misleading. It is filled with omissions and additions. It has edited the Bible and created wording that never existed.  One day as we all will, we stand before God and give an accounting,be judged and Jesus will decide our eternal fate. What are the producers gonna ” Sorry we didn’t know” or “We just did it for entertainment” Jesus will say ” be gone,I never knew you”  This type of so called religious televison produces nothing more than a form of religion without a personal realtionship with Jesus. If this is suppose to create interest in the Bible—people have never seen the TRUE bible in this series and if they do try to read the bible  they will find out that the two–the series and the real bible have nothing in common. This Television production will cause a host of false conclusions and assumptions that will  lead people away from God. There is only one version of the Bible –God’s.In the bok of Revelation God states what will happen to anyone who tampers wtih His word. Most biblical scholars and students agree that this scripture applies not only to the book of Revelation, but the entire Bible. To those so called Biblical scholars that gave their approval to this production or sing its praises— througout the bible God dealt with false teachers, priests, prophets and so called religious people for lying to His people and leading them astray. No matter how you slice it or what propaganda you spout you can’t deny your wrong doing. Under the guise of spreading God’s word you have done great harm to God’s church. If you beleive that this series is –biblical then you apparently haven’t read the original.

I had issue with this series, firstly with casting of the Afro-Asiatic Isrealite as white european’s.  and also with the sanitization of the stories, after all the bible is full of some of the most horrific violence which I think is important for context of historical time, it ended up with an abridged PG disney version.

  • Mary

I think you need to get past the casting and see the story.  How about the actor who plays Jesus?  Do you have a problem with him?  Jesus was a Jew and probably darker skinned as he came from Nazareth and with much darker hair.  However, the story is the point and the Jesus figure, like all of the other characters, where chosen for their ability to play the part, to become the persons they were portraying.  Try to look past it and see the Bible stories and you might enjoy it more.

  • TylerDurden

God didn’t write the bible. Man did, and it was put together by committee. There were gospels that made the cut, and some that didn’t.

sr, I dont believe a word you said. You watched it because its so awful??  Huh?? I’m not buying your lies. Your only intent is to bash the series.

  • Anonymous

To sansalvador – I couldn’t agree more! You hit the nail right on the head & that’s basically what I was trying to get across in my shorter post. Re: the Christian part of the Bible – the only production I’ve seen, that follows the gospels pretty much word-for-word is the older mini-series, “Jesus of Nazareth” w/ Robert Powell. All others have taken erroneous liberties. The series touted here is a dreadful mess of inaccuracies, & I’m very disappointed. I expected much more from Ms. Downey.

Believe what you will, rusty53. I started watching it initially because it was so highly acclaimed. But it just kept going from bad to worse. If I’m going to form an opinion or critique, don’t you think I should watch the whole thing, no matter how bad it is? I’m not lying here; I’m expressing my opinion which, as such, cannot be deemed “lying”! My intent is to 1) express my opinion as one who has watched many such films, 2) express my surprise & disappointment in Ms. Downey’s work, 3) point out, as sansalvador has done, that it is a highly inaccurate rendering of what is REALLY contained in the Bible! It deserves to be bashed.

I agree, wholeheartedly, that the casting was absolutely AWFUL! The acting isn’t that great, either…..

I guess I hoped for more, its on the history channel, it’s not anthropologically, geographically or theologically accurate. Its ironic that Glenn talks about the mis-information and incorrect history that is taught in the schools and then promotes a show which is guilty of the same thing.

    Absolutely!!! You’re 100% correct

You’re right he Bible was not “physically” written by God. “He” did not physically take pen in hand and write the Bible. He did not write with His own hand the bible as He did the stone tablets of the commandments. God via the Holy Spirit  directed and inspired the writting of the Bible. He used man as you would any tool to accomplish the task at hand. He allowed the men who physically  wrote “His” words to retain their own personalities and human traits in the writting, but it was God”s words they wrote— not something they created on their own alone.  Whether it was Moses,David ,Solomon, Nehemiah, Matthew,Luke,John  or whoever it was God who directed what they wrote.
If you don’t beleive that the Bible was divenly inspired  and from beginning to end that it is to be taken literally. i.e.God said it –it happened, then we have nothing to discuss. “Throwing pearls before swine is useless”. Useless debate with a non “ born again” Christian serves no purpose. The bible says that things of the Spirit can only be discerned by those who possess the Spirit. People that are “of the world” can not understand the Spiritual. The following facts are not debateable and are provided for your information.Whether you believe it or not makes no difference.
In regard to your statement about “gospels that didn’t make the cut”
You are refering to the “Aprocrypha” which is not considerd to be cannon or inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is not included in the Protestant bible ,but is included in the Roman Catholic bible. Protestants do not include the books of the Apocrypha because: Ist The Jewish (Hebrew cannon does not include it) 2nd Jesus excludes the Apocrypha in his statemens. He uses the Hebrew cannon. 3rd There are no direct quotations from any of the Apocryphal books in the New Testament. There are allusions to Apocryphal events and statment in Hebrews 11:37 ,but none of the apostles used the Apocrypha as an authorative source.Protestants and  Roman Catholics agree on  the cannon of the twenty -seven books of the New Testament, but disagree on the Old Testamnt cannon. At the time the Christian Bible was was first being formed, a Greek translation of Jewish Scripture know as the Seputagint was in common use. Followers of Christ,Christians, adopted it as the Od Testamnt of the Christian Bible. Before there was one book that existed containg all  Hebrew scripture known as the bible the Jews used Scrolls.Around 100Ad Jewish rabbis revised their scripture and established an Offical Cannon of Judaism which excluded some of the Greek Seputuagint translations of scripture. When Constatine became Emperor of the Roman Empire he made Christanity the state religion of the entire Roman empire(the edict of Milan in AD313) and demanded that the religious leaders make a book, A bible, of all the accepted documents that contained scripture Even so a complete Bible with  both Old and New testament was not available to the common man until the invention of the printing press in AD 1440. The Roman catholic Church was established during the period when Constatine was emperor and included the books of the Apocrypha as part of  the Catholic bible. In the 1500s Protestant leaders included all the original Hebrew ,Jewish, scriptures, but excluded the Aprocrypha.as they accepted the Jewish cannon that had been established in 90 AD. Roman Catholicism did not “offically” recognize the Apocrypha until the 15 th century and still even today debate what is or is not cannon. They included it because many of their chrurch doctrines are noted in those books. 1st and 2nd Maccabees, Baruch, Tobit, Judith,Sirach, Susanna, Bel and the Dragon,!st and 2nd Esdras, Prayer of Manasseh and  several others for a total of 15.
When you talk about the books of the bible you have to be specific as to the Old Testamnt or New Testamnt and if you are taking about Protestant or Roman Catholic. You need to reference whether you are speaking of Hebrew or Greek and what period in history you are discussing. You can spend a life time researching the bible, scripture and what is “cannon’ ,and still not understand the things of God . You might acquire head knowledge ,but have no realtionship wth God and His son Jesus. The following is a list of Roman Catholic versions of the Bible; Latin Vulgate (390-405), The Douai-Rheims (1582-1610), The Challoner-Rheims (1799-1777), The Catholic version of the Revised Standard Bible (1965) The Jerusalem bible ( 1966), The New American Bible (1970-1983) The New Jerusalem Bible (1985) There are also Ecumenical versions such as: The New English Bibe, The revised English Bible and the New Revised Standard. You should be cautious of the various translations and How the different bible versions have been edited. Some have omitted the virgin birth of Jesus and excluded his sonship as God.  Choose a bible that is the closest to the orignal Hebrew scrolls and Jewish cannon. i.e. The King James version. There are also good “Literal” translations such as The English Revised Version 1881, the American Standad Version of 1901. There are numerous Study Bibles and commetaries that may also prove helpful such as the Thompson Chain Study bible. if you decide to do some research. Note! Hebrew translates nicley into English, but not so well into Latin.
The word “Gospel” is misused by many people. The Gospel may be defined as the Gospel of Jesus Christ which refers to “The Good News” or God’s gift of salvation. The  “Four” Gospels refers to the writtings of  Matthew, Mark ,Luke and John. concerning the life of Jesus. The term gospel is derived from the Angol-Saxon term godpell which means “good tidings” . In the New Testament the term Gospel never means a single book in the bible, but rather the good tidings of Jesus ,His life, His death on the cross , His resurection, His return to heaven and the fact that He is comming back. The “gospel” is about Jesus. A good Bible dictionary would help you use  biblical terms/words properly.
God wrote the Bible. Man has abused His words by intentionaly creating error in translations,by improperly editing His words or adding their intpertations to His word. I.E.—- This new so called Bible televison series “The Bible”.

    Amen brother!

  • TylerDurden

The New Testament is not a first hand account. The four gospels were not written by Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. They were written by different people who never met any of them decades after Jesus’ supposed death.

Roma and Mark Burnett are blasphemous in the Bible series thia past six weeks implying that Jesus said “I am King”.  I have studied the Bible relentlessly and Jesus NEVERED said a word.  How can she and he be sol wrong?????  This is a misconception and I don not believe that either the Burnett’s know much about the New Testament.  I am appalled that this was translated to the public.  Shame upon them….really makes this whole story as unreliable
