Mass distribution of solar energy to meet the energy demands of the US will never be practical will it?-based upon what you now know?
A couple other questions to help us all have an accurate picture of what you did:
What was your cost outlay for the project?
Will you be applying for the IRS subsidy credit for “renewable energy improvements” which expires in 2014?
What is the estimated life of your storage batteries and how much will it cost to periodically replace them?
How much AC 120 V power does your system make (Max)?—Min=0 at night)
What have you projected your other maintenence overhead $ to be during the estimated life of the system?
Adding all these factors together, when will the system be at monitary “break even” based upon energy savings?

P.S. I hope you have dropped that “My solar backup” guy by now. That tiny system they were marketing was WAY overpriced for what it would do–I read the specs!

About halfway to the break even point for the system to pay for itself, the solar panels will have become obsolete,and stopped making electricity because they are worn out.  At that time you will be blessed with a huge bill for their replacement.

It’s kind of like the Solyndra fiasco.  The were selling solar panels for 500 dollars which cost them 1500 dollars to manufacture.

And the Fisker cars that sold for 100,000 dollars each but cost 300,000 dollars to make.

In spite of multimillion dollars from Obama’s slush fund for those companies, they both went belly up, and the owners of the companies took the money and ran, leaving you and me to pay the bills (for the next 4 generations).

Now, Glenn, I don’t mind that you have the money to waste on this frivolous waste of resources, but even Al Gore can see the folly in it. And don’t put in for the tax credit, because I pay for that every payday.

Glenn,  added solar to my house and both daughters houses over the last four years.  We make more electricity than we use on all three houses.  Then because I didn’t like selling my surplus back to the utility at wholesale rates I bought two Nissan Leaf’s and just added a Tesla S (I love the Tesla, amazing car).  I am now pretty much 100% power self sufficient.  Higher gas and electric costs just improve my return on investment.  Was amazed that in Arizona 1/3 of my roof could furnish all my home and transportation power.  Used my own tax dollars that would have been wasted in DC to become self sufficient.  I have to admit I started the process in 2009 while looking for a way to keep my taxes out of Obama’s hands.  I put my tax dollars on my roof and became self sufficient in the process.  I like being self sufficient.

I use a grid tie system and have been able to get the payback to about 8 to 10 years based on electricity rates and increases. I basically prepaid my home electric bill for 8 years upfront. No maintenance.  The utility is like a bank account for me.  I give them my surplus (make Deposits) during the day when demand is high and make withdrawals at night when demand is low.  Win Win.  Once a year the utility reconciles the account and credits my surplus for the year at the cheapest wholesale rate ever.  So instead of selling my surplus back I bought battery cars and use it for my own transportation.  Battery cars get about 3.6 miles per kWh and the utility pays me 3.6 cents per kWh on my surplus.  So it cost me 1 cent a mile to drive my battery car.  No scheduled maintenance for 100,000 miles.

I was some what amazed at how well the batteries cars actually work.  I run two Leaf’s and now one Tesla S.  The Tesla S is an absolutely amazing car.  250 to 300 miles of range.  

I am still amazed how easy it was to become 100% self sufficient. I will admit that there are lots of tax issues that serve to improve the break even numbers.  But then all the tax savings are my own money that I earned that I did not have to give to the government to waste on some drug addled idiots social cost.  Instead I used my own tax dollars to become totally energy independent.  A much smarter use of taxes that DC would have crapped away.  So I have zero problem with being allowed by a kind and loving government to keep my tax dollars and use them this way.

Do I pay for your mortgage interest deduction and child tax credit.  I assume you are happy to not use any legal deduction when you file your taxes.  I am 100% energy self sufficient and used every tax deduction possible to do it.  Have no problem keeping my own money away from the Federal Government and using it to make myself energy independant.

It is truly amazing that I don’t buy any gas or any electricity.  I am 100% in control of my energy needs.  I really like being self sufficient.  Because I did it the costs will and have come down for all other consumers.  Forget the global warming crap it makes sense to be independent of middle east oil terrorists and public utilities.

The math works, my payback period is approx 8 years.  I have not paid an electric bill in four years.  I have not had a single maintenance cost for the system.  The panels shade my roof and my Arizona house is cooler because of the shade.  My roof material does not deteriorate because it is shaded.

I was skeptical when I started down the process but now am absolutely amazed how possible it was to be 100% energy self sufficient.  Don’t let Al Gore scare you away from energy independence.  It is a great feeling to not be dependent on the energy markets.

I do understand renewable energy.  I am an Engineer so I know of such things.
 
Solar energy is renewable, but the solar panels are not. They wear out and stop working and must be replaced at a substantial cost, and they wear out before they break even.  They can be recycled to recover about $2.00 worth of material.

Wind energy is renewable, but the wind turbines cost millions of dollars, require a lot of maintenance, and yes, they too wear out and have to be replaced at another cost of millions of dollars. They also can be recycled to yield a couple of thousand dollars.

Geothermal energy is renewable, but the turbines required to generate power from the steam are not. You have to build a huge plant, and fill it with generators run by steam turbines. Do Steam turbines and generators wear out and need to be replaced? BINGO, you got that one right.

Or they may have been made in China, by slave labor or 10 year-old children.

Do you have an electric car? Chances are it was made in Japan, or Korea, or Europe. Do you feel independent, because the money you paid for it went out of the country to feed people who generally don’t like you at all.

Yo Vac, Randy is correct. It is easier for humans to survive in warmer environments than it is colder ones. People just need to stay hydrated, and not overexert themselves. Freezing or starving to death is much more common.

Hey thanks for the additional info. I did some additional research and found that 240 V AC grid synced interface converters are now indeed being marketed to the consumer. It’s still a pricy endeavor for an all electric house like mine (estimated equipment cost for a 15 KW peak handling system with an instantaneous average load of 26 Amps at 120 and estimated daily average consumption of 28.5 KWhrs/day is rounded off 30-35K $.) But,
I see it is now possible to do whole house full service residential off grid installations and that the NEC/Uniform Building Code Book has added code guidelines for it but man, that’s a load of cash!  I’d need more floor space to physically place the battery array and inverter units. 20 years ago, the wacko environmentalists were touting “Global Freeze, a new ice age, Global cooling.”  One of their proposals was to spread  dark colored ashes from the air on the Polar Ice so that the sun would warm up the ice and cause it to melt, saving the planet from Global Cooling.

Can you imagine what would have happened if they did that?

Now I would agree that humans may go extinct but the planet could care less if you are here or not. We are no smarter than a herd of deer. If we have food and water we will breed and grow. When we run out of food and water we will die off and rebalance.

I started out with the goal to be off grid and found it to be way to costly with current tech. I have a PTO generator for my mini yard tractor and can use that to fake my inverters into action in the event of a worst case power failure.

Grid tie is really the only cost effective answer right now. With the utility rebates and state and federal tax credits you should be able to get below a 15 year pay back. The nice thing is you are free from rate increases. I got mine to about 8 years and looked at it as just prepaying for 8 years of electric bills. Rate increases balance out the cost of money calc. The lost interest earnings, crap rate anyway, are offset by the avoidance of future rate increases. So take savings that are earning crap and lock up your electric cost for the future.

First thing on an all electric house is to put in solar water heaters. Probably get rid of 15 to 20 % of your electric use and will have tons of free hot water. I make so much hot water I wash my cars with hot water. Then see what your usage is and design a system for the after solar water loads. I also put in larger inverters and derated with fewer panels. Panels are the biggest cost. Then when I added battery cars I just added panels to the under used inverters. In my case I went from 12 panel strings to 13 and added enough power to charge the cars. So consider a bigger inverter running less panels than its rated. You can add more panels for just the panel costs. Price difference on inverters is small between a 5 7 or 8 etc.

My utility buys back on April 30th each year. I usually get about $150 credit that covers my base meter charge for the next year. I bought battery cars because it made more sense to charge the cars than sell back annual surplus at wholesale buy back rates. 3.6 cents per kWh.

At first I thought the annual buy back was a rip off but have decided I really like the system. It balances out the years varying usage cycles. I bank power spring and fall and lose a little summer and winter. The once a year reconciliation works very well and is really simple.

When I retired my company had grown from 5 employees in 1992 to 500 in 2005. Had to retire because it made no sense to die at my desk while the government took half my income then took half of what I had built when I died.
