Huh? CNN’s Candy Crowley asks Sen. Rand Paul if he would consider switching parties

During his filibuster earlier this year, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was widely viewed as an enemy of the state by the mainstream media. During the more recent Obamacare and debt ceiling debates, however, Sen. Paul has taken a sideline approach as his colleagues like Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) garner the majority of the media attention.

Apparently Sen. Paul’s silence has been construed as disgruntlement by at least some in the media, for CNN’s Candy Crowley actually asked Sen. Paul if he would consider switching parties during an interview on Sunday’s State of the Union.

Get Glenn Live! On TheBlaze TV

“Candy Crowley, I mean, didn’t they hate Rand Paul recently,” Glenn asked on radio this morning. “But because Rand Paul is out of this fight and has stayed on the sidelines, now Rand Paul is suddenly the most reasonable man in America. In fact, maybe Rand should become a Democrat. I’m not kidding you.”

CROWLEY: Do you see yourself at any point in the future being other than politically a member of the Republican Party?

RAND PAUL: You mean, you’re implying a third party or some other party?

CROWLEY: Or if you wanted to become a Democrat. There’s lots of third parties out there. Just wonder if you see, see yourself being anything other than a Republican.

RAND PAUL: No, I’ve always been a Republican and I’m one of those people who actually is a real lover of the history of the Republican Party – from the days of abolition through the days of civil rights. The Republican Party has a really rich history. In our state, I’m really proud of the fact that the ones who overturned Jim Crow in Kentucky were Republicans fighting against an entirely unified Democrat Party. So I am proud to be a Republican, can’t imagine being anything else.

“That is the greatest answer I’ve ever heard,” Glenn said.

“It is,” Pat agreed, “because he’s not necessarily proud of the current Republican Party. But he’s proud of the rich history of the Republican Party.”

The beauty of Sen. Paul’s answer is that it does not condone or support the current state of the Republican Party, but it also doesn’t give Crowley the satisfaction of hearing him bash Republicans. Glenn explained that conservatives should actually find solace and hope in the history of the Republican Party that Sen. Paul refers to.

“I want you to think of one thing. I want you to remember that the Republicans in 1850 didn’t exist. 1850 they didn’t exist. And we were talking about slavery and it was the Whigs and the Democrats. And the Democrats were all for slavery and the Whigs were too. It’s kind of like the Republicans now. The Whigs were, too, but they’d talk a better game. The Democrats were into, ‘These aren’t people. Let’s put chains around them.’ The Whigs were like, ‘Oh, come on now. Let’s vote me in another time and we’re going to end this slavery thing’ and then that would never happen… It [was] a one-party system,” Glenn explained. “And so there were 20 of them, mainly Whigs but I think there were a couple of Democrats, and they left. And they said, ‘We’re going to start our own party.’ That was I think 1850 to 1853, somewhere in that area. By 1860 the Republicans had not only destroyed the Whigs but they ran a Republican president, Abraham Lincoln.”

“From zero to the president of the United States within 10 years. And that’s with no real press… You couldn’t share this information as rapidly as we can now. You don’t need ten years. You could do it in 18 months,” he continued. “And I think you’re approaching it. And I think the way to do it is to try to save the rich heritage of the Republicans, although I don’t know anybody even cares anymore, but save the rich heritage of the Republicans, leave that infrastructure in place but get the people like John McCain and all of those guys out. Get them to leave the party.”

Rand Paul understands what is going on, and that the lies of the administration continue unabated. The treasury brings in revenues of $250 Billion monthly, and debt payments are a mere 10% of that.

It means there is no chance of default save upon the orders of Obama.

When certain politicians claim to be Republican but clearly are not holding on to the basic fundamental beliefs, laws are broken. These laws and violations should be documented and a prosecution should be brought against them. Then, they should each be booted out one by one! Do such laws exist?

The D-R’s were not around in the mid 1800′s- sorry. They were a creation of Jefferson, Madison and others. The Democratic Republicans were around in the late 1790′s and early 1800′s- there was a short stint as the National Republicans in the 1820′s- but they were the Whigs after that, until a few broke off and created the Republican party. But to that point it was only the Democrats & Whigs.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have this message.

This is one idea that really should be passed around

    *Congressional Reform Act of 2013

    1. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they’re out of office.

    2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

    3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

    4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

    5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

    6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

    7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/31/13. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.

Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Don’t you think it’s time?

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!

I personally hope he leads a 3rd party. I have never felt the time was right to vote for a 3rd party in the past. I felt like they they were un-electable and diluted the vote. I don’t feel that way any more. I think this latest Administration has pissed people off enough on BOTH sides that a 3rd Party will pick up  LOT of votes. people who won’t vote for a Dem or a Rep just because of all the bad blood could and will  vote for  something new. That’s why there is such an attack with names like ‘tea-bublican”  these people pose areal threat to ANY incumbent because  ”We The People” are just sick of the bullshit. It’s on both sides- we need the freedom clean slate will bring. I hope Rand and Cruse start to distance themselves from the GOP. The GOP brand is dead. Reps like Lindsay Gram, and John Mccain are going to go by way of the Dinosaur- their old, their tired and they make it easy to paint conservatives with the “Crusty-and -Old” brush. My prediction (for what it’s worth) is that a 3rd party with the right voice can unify this Country. We are at an impasse- people feel it. We have 2 choices right now  to accept how it is and roll over- or show the world that WE THE REAL AMERICANS not the Politicians the “you’s”, the “me’s”. the “guy overt here” we are made of the same grit are Country was founded on and we can do better. Better than 16 trillion in the hole- better than 1 in 4 on food stamps, better than losing our place in the world view. We ARE better. Concessions will have to be made on BOTH sides- neither side will be 100% happy but, shit has to change. The direction we are going is not the right path. It’s not too late but,it will be if another Progressive gets in. We need a 3rd Party and we need it now. My hope- Rand Paul runs in 2016 not as a Rep or a Dem. We need someone who radical enough  to   tell  BOTH  sides to shove it and start working for US- the Real Americans- the every day worker Ant that is the back bone of his Nation…..OK if anyone is STILL reading this I will climb off my soap box – just remember- We are BETTER than this….

I was asked the same question once, about possibly changing to democrat.

I replied that I would consider changing to their party when:

They stop supporting the murder of 300,000 unborn babies every year.
They stop their economic and social slavery against black people.
They promise to dump Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barry Obama, and all the other insane leaders they have put in positions of authority.
They come up with a tax plan which has some even miniscule cut in it.
They cut PBS, Planned Parenthood, foreign aid to unfriendly countries, Global warming/climate change funding, to zero!
They abolish the Dept of Education, Dept of Energy, and any other departments that don’t give anything in return for the billions of dollars we give them.

That would be a small step in the reform necessary for the democrat party to be the party of the people they say they are.

So if you are kicking people out of the party (John McCain, Graham, etc) who is going to come into the party?  Your numbers have to be greater then the numbers that elect the Democrats.  So logic says if you are rejecting the less conservative parts of the party, then just to maintain the current status, an equal number of constituents must come in.  It’s just like a classic leaky bucket calculus problem

With $250 Billion monthly revenue, where is it going? Why not pay down the debt?

Hope you don’t mind if I copy and paste this in other boards!

I seriously doubt you are concerned. If you are fat, I would be happy to eat a plate of nachos with you. …blacks who call other blacks black? huh? I just want them to work for a living and gain some self respect…you? you just want votes for idiots like Obama.

I will continue to subscribe to this site, and will continue to glance through the comments for the occasional one that is relevant to the topic.

I know my history well, and am a student of the Constitution – yet Glenn just reminded me of somethings I’d forgotten. I’d forgotten that the Whigs lasted as long as they did and that the Republican party was formed so late. That, in combination with Rand Paul’s comments, was the real issue.

As an Northeastern Republican, and that since I was able to vote (at 21 in 1956, long before most of you were born) I’ve seen many swings in the party – but the consistent principle has been a basic belief in the Constitution and the right of the people ot decide. I was a Rockefeller Republican until he got his “Edifice” complex as governor of NY. I have called myself a “progressive Republican”, but then leaned the real meaning of “progressive”. I don’t agree with Glenn on Sen. McCain and others, but I understand his view.

The comments on this post that I’ve scanned so far refer to Ms. Crowley’s weight and Pres, Obama’s color, and are invective on both sides of the issue. What do they have to do with the issue?

There is but one basic principle, in my mind, and that is our republican form of government. A federation of sovereign states with the job of the federal government being to conduct relations with external nations. One of the great mistakes was the 17th amendment, and second unto that the wording of Section 1 or Article IV (interstate commerce – is should be worded so that a State doesn’t have to recognized licensing, etc. from other States if said thing is illegal in that State).

Enough, I wish many of you would grow up and match the level of dialogue that Glenn presents – although I disagree with him on many details of his views.

Jon, shut your pie hole..a lot of words to prove your NE Liberal ways.

i think the gop could make a good case for this if they organize (along with key constituents) an intervention.

the mccains and grahams will have a lot of campaign money — it will come from the left.

Jay jay squacks like a blue jay and has the same sized brain and vocabulary.

How’s that for replying in kind.

It is just such views that are ruining our republic, both left and right are claiming that what is best for one is best for all. The Founding Fathers realized that what is sauce for the goose is not necessarily sauce for the gander – and they gave each State two Senators (appointed by the State Legislature or appropriate body).

At the time they were dealing with 13 States, all on the east coast, but recognized the differences. Their wisdom became even more apparent as we added the central and western states. What is good for New York is not good for Montana, and vice versa.

The real issue is the nature of our federal republic. The left wants a central government where all rules are uniform across the state boundaries – an artificial collection of disparate states into one central authority. It would seem from our braying ass that the far right wants the same – just with different rules.

I have long said that the political spectrum is not a straight line with a left and right end – it is a circle. The far right and the far left are close to each other – each wants to dictate the rules for everyone, it is just that their rules are different. They are at the bottom of the circle where it comes back together. At the top are those who believe in individual freedom and initiative. They bend away from that to the left and the right, but yet remain true to the principle.

Our real problem at the moment is that the entire left side of the circle has fallen below the center line, they are unified in their belief that the United States should become a form of monarchy, a centralized nation run by an elite. We would have to rename it – it would no longer be a group of united states, each with a form of sovereignty, it would be very similar to the European nations with their tradition of monarchy now called democracy, as the “monarch” is voted in. The great experiment of the Constitution was the government by the people – the bottom up formation of the laws.

If our jay jay has read this far, which I doubt, may I say that I am liberal – in the definition of the word, I have an open mind. I am also conservative, I believe in traditional values – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Barry Commoner (Common Cause) once called me a “tree hugging right winger” because I disputed his proposal for linear towns and the elimination of suburbs (I pointed out that trees had a role to play in our ecology). Now he is an “eco-freak”, and I haven’t changed my view.

We have basically urban states and basically rural states, and a lot of states in between. No single policy will ever be best for them all. Our goal should be to elect those who believe in reducing the powers of the national (I won’t call it Federal as it isn’t) government. It should not be examining every detail of their specific views to see if they match ours. We were a federation of states, that has been eroded in the last hundred years – we should return to it.

Rand Paul picks his battles smart. Cruz and Lee can take care of their battles. How did reporters get so high and mighty and condescending? They all have the smirk..

  • RevJules

A well put response, sir. If she, and her leftist ilk, were not so hell bent on destroying our country, to the point of the lies and outright false stories, I’m sure more folks would be kinder to her regarding her size. Alas, maybe not. She represents the evil of the left and those who would do us harm in their quest for power, so any negative which can be used to demean her will be used. Its human nature.

I am a strong constitutional conservative, but one thing I’ve learned on this site is that as intolerant as the left is, there are people here that are the same. If you don’t “Toe THEIR line” you are the enemy. Most people on here get to the point and express their views intellegently, but there are always the few that are just ignorant people.

  • Anonymous

After continually reading your posts, you seem like a liberal who would go to a Tea Party rally and cause problems specifically for the main stream media to video and show on their news casts.

  • Anonymous

I wonder if Glenn has compared himself to Churchill or Cassandra. Churchill was a tolerated, disliked outcast who only spoke the truth while the establishment politicians led their country into disaster. A dithering, weak prime minister, a dithering, weak President; parallels are sometimes unsettling.

Disagree with Crowley and you are ‘fattist.’ Love it. She has some talent, but her scripted and Democrat-directed trap of Romney during the debates DISQUALIFIES her from any consideration as a news person. She is as much a Dem agent as McCauliffe or Daschle or Carney.

Historically the Democrats were the party of Slavery, Jim Crow laws after the Ciuvil War, Segregation, Discrimination, KKK, and opposition to the Civil Rights legislation of the 50′s. After the LBJ debacle many in the old South switched to the GOP and Nixon because they couldn’t stomache Hubert Humphry’s policies or the Chicago riots. After Reagan, ‘liberal Democratl’ became a dirty word. Clinton ran as a centrist; it’s his wife who’s the Marxist.

What is that lawyer’s saying? ‘If you’re right argue the facts, if you’re wrong argue the law, yell and scream and froth at the mouth.’

Ort17>kentchris,are you seriously comparing MAO with GAHNDI,are you on LSD??Go back to MSNBC’S website, where the lemmings just follow eachother like walkers…..Pick up a book once in awhile, instead of disagreeing just for the sake of disagreeing!!!MAO,lol, wow!!!!!

orto17 I would take the time to explain, but I doubt there is enough time in the world for you to understand. I will have to leave you in the dark on this one. I’m sure you will be comfortable.

  • Nottooswift

Wow, way to reach out to Pluto! All of the racists I know are Southern/Midwest democrats both rich and poor. I have yet to meet a rich white Republican racist. It’s best not to speak when you are ignorant of the facts.

  • ruth berry

It just shows how much of a dirt ball the Liberal’s really are.

  • ruth berry

You may as well add my name to the list. Ruth Berry!

  • ruth berry

I can say for a fact that after being a strong Republican for over 20 yrs, and Tea Party member for 3 years, I was shock in the remarks coming from them in the G Zimmerman case. I was even unfriend by two white females, who were ok with me bashing of Obama. I was so shocked on many of their comments I started not to come back to the Rep. party!

Candy asking Rand Paul if he’d ever change parties tells me that the Dems *wish* they had him! I think they’re concerned that he might be the next Prez….

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDFGELoC4zc Sam Fisher

Will do and I should put my name on the list for being part Native American.

  • Cuffs

“If you wanted to become a Democrat?” This woman has got to be
    brain dead!

  • Cuffs

Perhaps Crowley should ask Graham and McCain if they would
like to change parties. Both of them would make excellent
Democrats, we conservative Republicans really don’t want
them in our party anymore; they are too duplicitous and
    phony.

  • Cuffs

Do you thing maybe Rand is just a little smarter than Crowley?
    Nah.

  • Susanne Prince

I am so glad she was stupid enough to ask that question ~ I simply *LOVE* the answer Rand Paul gave her!

  • Cuffs

Reagan got 49 states by articulating conservatism.
It can be done again. We need leaders who can
connect with the people on conservative values.
Trumping that fraud Obama isn’t really that hard
to do. The obstacle is to rout the media and that
can be done by articulate, aggressive conservatism.
No one did it better than Reagan and Gingrich.

  • Cuffs

Typo there–substitute Rand Paul for Barack Hussein Obama.
Rand Paul didn’t put America in this mess, Barry did.

  • Mary Murphy

This is probably the most disgusting bit of political commentary I have seen yet.
Keep to the point and leave the personal attacks to the other side. Stooping to that level is not becoming at all.

  • Mike H

I’m not. Somebody this overweight clearly lacks self control and wise decision making in their personal life. And by the way, guess who PAYS for the overweight unhealthy people now? YOU AND I. So with all due respect for your cordial response, now that the entire US Taxpayers via Obamatax are going to be FORCED to pay for bad behaviour, then you’re darn right I’m gonna have an opinion.

  • J D S

I’ll add one more to that list. When they return to the US Treasury the $600 + million that was totally wasted on a web site that is NOT needed and does NOT even function correctly after 3 years of development!!!! How much of that money found its way into the hands of our enemies under the guise of “programmers”? I’d sure like to know the answer to that. I’d build the people a first class web site that actually worked for far less than a mere $1 million, and be very glad to get the job. No doubt thousands of others can say the same. It’s far past the time for the “sleeping giant” to wake up again! Of course I could mention others like the so-called “bail out”, but I digress, I’ll just stick with the one…

  • strutter

Why don’t we all join the Tea Party and make it a real Party, like the Republicans did to the Whig Party?

  • Hoosierdaddy

Intelligence > Whining. There are a handful of very intelligent people in congress that could save this country.

  • Anonymous

Brylaln, I have to disagree slightly with you – many on this site get the point, not most. But that is picking-nits on percentages.I hope you enjoyed my somewhat weak attempt to answer jay jay in kind, I’m not very good at insults or polemic.

I noticed your later answer to him, a suggestion that he might be a liberal “agent provocateur” – interesting thought, there are some on this forum.

Thank you for your comment, I’ll probably scan the comments on the site a few more times – but it is too much work to find the intelligent ones, Even the intelligent, or at least reasonably so, comments on this thread concentrate on Brian’s initial comment about Ms. Crowley’s weight – and I’m sure he was just tossing a quicky wisecrack rather than establishing a thread, he was pointing out the foolishness of Crowley’s question about Paul perhaps becoming a Democrat. That little joke from Brian became a never ending dialog off the real topic that Glenn raised.

  • Kannibal Jones

i understand, you sound like a good person but that fat joke don’t make one a bad person

  • Andie

Why the hell does that even matter? Really? Weight thrown into a politics?

  • Andie

Lol. I have to like seriously laugh at how ignorant you sound. It’s unbelievable. Do you think Glenn Beck believes that too?

  • Andie

    Not the point.

  • Andie

What? The point is that it’s politics and by referencing her weight adds absolutely nothing to the point of the video. It’s just bad “humor”.

  • Andie

Black has everything to do with it, yeah. Throw that in there.

eventually a third party will arise the socialist demos and Republicans won’t be around.

Congress not working is evidence enough of the disincentive of extra pay for not working. the cure, according to Paul is stop paying congress, and they will work.
    Sounds just about right!

  • Jonathan Kerry

who cares if a hundred seventy three disagree with me. Their opinion is of no concern to me. My parents taught me to be respectful of everyone regardless of who they are and that is how I try to approach things. How about we all learn to respect each other and have calm intelligent discussions without insulting people for things that really are of no concern to you or I. Lets cut the crap and talk about the real issues. The things that are actually important and need to get discussed.
