Glenn talks to author Stephen Mansfield about the troubled state of manhood in our society

Glenn has been talking about the importance of Stephen Mansfield’s book, Mansfield’s Book of Manly Men, for a number of weeks now. And on Wednesday’s Glenn Beck Program, Stephen joined Glenn to discuss the importance of redefining ‘masculinity’ and ‘manliness’ in our culture.

Stephen explained that he wrote this book because we all know manhood is in trouble in our society – that’s been true for decades. But in recent years, Stephen said he has spent a lot of time on college campuses where the young men have almost screamed out: “Just tell me what to do! What does it mean to be a man?” It was then he realized that young men in this country had heard people talk broadly about masculinity, but no one in their lives had ever detailed it for them. Once Stephen understood this clearly, he got to work on the book.

To start, Glenn explained why the Stephen’s book has resonated so deeply in his own life, and he asked Stephen to define – quite simply – who a ‘man’ is.

In the book, Stephen outlines the ‘Four Manly Maxims’:

1. Manly men do manly things

2. Manly men tend to their fields

3. Manly men build manly men

4. Manly men live to the glory of God

Glenn is currently working with his son and son-in-law to begin to implement these maxims in their own lived. Glenn asked Stephen to expand upon the themes each represents and why each is important to creating the resurgence of valiant manhood so desperate in society today.

Anytime a man has to refer to himself or the things he does as ‘manly’, you know he’s in deep, deep trouble.

For the record, I agree, manhood is endangered in this country. But the way to reinstate it is not to talk about being ‘manly’.

  • Charles Hurst

Problem is strength has been eroded in the concept of man. There is little left of “stand up for what is right.” Men have been raised like women due to the rampant divorce of the Generation X era and X’rs are divorcing at the accelerated rate as well. When you have a society that will not stand it will surely fall. I am also a writer–of fiction and my prediction of the collapse will largely be to this feminizing of man. There is no occupation in this country that has not been corrupted and yet we still allow the corruption to occur. Wyatt Earp would not have. Or Patton. And that is the difference of today versus yesteryear.

It’s not just the manhood, but our humanity which is lacking.

Sad. The men of my generation never asked what male traits were. They knew and just lived their lives. There are girly young men in the workforce I see. It’s rewarding to me to see my sons act like men.

Just go watch every movie ever made by John Wayne, Cary Grant, or Clark Gable (or pick your own star from that era and take notes.) My favorite John Wayne. We need more John Wayne’s running around in the world.

Which is why Glenn said that so-called “manly” men don’t speak (i.e. call themselves manly), they DO things (i.e. ACT manly).

  • Anonymous

I’m sure that you have a point as well.

  • Guest

Good for you. What is with you anyways Glenn says up and you say down just because you hate him irrationally.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8FvmesaxXg Sam Fisher

Best way to be a man stop being a liberal.

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

Sam Fisher, why are you trying to project your own irrationality and hatred unto me then “Guesting”?

    I thought that was cowardly?

Guess when a person is so full of hate they can’t control themselves…

When you finally get past all that and of Glenn Beck’s generalizations and rhetoric, you will see he is nothing more than one of those “Patriots for Profits”, like most (if not all) of the talking heads in the media who claim to be conservatives.

    .

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

I didn’t watch the video, did Glenn Beck cry while saying that?

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

No, not really but I will since you are interested.

It is a sad day indeed if men have to read books on how to be manly men.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, how about mentioning Rock Hudson? THERE was a MAN!

  • Anonymous

There are many reasons for this “manly” shortness. The modern family has both husband and wife working and sharing family chores together. I guess the manly man would never offer to help with the dishes or cleaning the house, eh? The world is a-changing so live with it. I wonder if there were any transvestites in years gone by? I guess man can’t hide his manliness no matter what he does….pun intended.

  • jo blo

Yeah, but he used the term.

I knew WWII, Korea and Vietnam vets when I was a little kid. Whenever a boy or man did something that was not befitting the male of the species, they’d criticize the particular behavior, and then say ‘you’re not supposed to x, you’re supposed to y’. They never used the word ‘manly’. Indeed, that word was rarely used even by women, except when they’d meet a real specimen of effeminacy.

Aside from the issue I mentioned above, it also opens one up to all kinds of childish jokes from the left.

A monologue about not backing down, or not whining, or being willing to die for one’s beliefs, would be much better, IMHO.

  • jo blo

And see, as much as I basically like Beck, that’s the problem with ever showing weakness and then talking about this sort of thing: your credibility is shot.

  • Karen

This is also an obvious plan of the left. They want to get rid of “manly men” so they can take over and there will be no one to fight back. I can handle my weapons but I still think when it comes down to it in the end, we will need real MEN that will standup and lead the take back of our country.

I agree with your first statement. Your second statement I do not. Young kids need guidance and people who they can communicate with about the problems they face in society. When I was growing up we didn’t have any gender problems that the kids are faced with today from politic correct thinking. If you do not communicate to kids what you think are the basics they will get their education from the left. It is not good enough to lead by example anymore. Kids need to know and understand why one path might be better for them than another especially the way the left attack people in today’s society.

  • Anonymous

America is in its saddest days and people are looking for guidance. Mostly kids and young adults need guidance about manhood in the face of political correct thinking. For those older it is a warning not to let the left dictate the social norms in today’s society which has been happening for many years.

Guest did not address his post to you. Why all the hostility even if he did? No one lays it on the line everyday more than Glen Beck. Why try to discredit someone who is trying to help? Why not use your attack skills on a liberal site?

  • Anonymous

I agree. Right now America is in a war of words as half of society is leaning left. The young people will tip the scales one way or the other and need as much guidance as we can give them.

  • Anonymous

I am not quite sure why you mean by lacking in humanity. Americans are a very generous people. What Americans need to decide is whether or not we are helping people by allowing them to become dependent on society or would people be better served by demanding personal responsibility and accountability.

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

What do you mean by, Guest did not address his post to me?

I received a Disqus email notification that Sam Fisher replied to me with that message which is now guested.

Re: “Why all the hostility even if he did?”

There was no hostility from me, I was merely asking why Sam was projecting himself onto me and why he guested when he has stated in the past that it is cowardly.

Re: “Why try to discredit someone who is trying to help?

    We obviously disagree on that.

Re: “Why not use your attack skills on a liberal site?”

Sometimes I do, but I usually don’t waste my time at the looney left sites. I am more concerned with the state of the republican party with their abandonment of republican principles.

Figure I treat you like you do everyone else. Also I see you been listening to Alex Jones again.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8FvmesaxXg Sam Fisher

So let me get this right you did not watch the video but still criticize it. What a troll you become.

  • Stuart Alexander

I happen to know Stephen Mansfield well; we go back many years. He is fine man, one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever known…..and was one heck of a racquetball player. He was also a fantastic pastor……

  • landofaahs

Abortion. Look what so-called people do on black Friday. a lot of people in this country care more for animals than they do for their fellow man. Look at the thieving politicians lying cheating and stealing from the public through corrupt influence and cronyism. Do I really need to go on?

  • jo blo

    Wow, hoss, hold your fire.

I am not advocating a mere lead by example situation. I think there needs to be correction and reinforced guidance. As I told someone below the WWII, Korea and Vietnam era men I knew as a young boy would never treat ‘manhood’ or ‘manliness’ as a separate concept, at least not with young people. They would say ‘now a boy doesn’t X’ or ‘you shouldn’t X, you should Y’. And anytime they saw a boy acting out of line (for instance, acting effeminate), they’d kindly, but firmly correct it; and they were good at doing it in a way that made it clear that one should not repeat the aberrant behavior again.

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

So now you are no better than what you claim I am now.

Besides projecting, you are back to justifying your own bad behavior through moral relativism again.

We already had a discussion about your worldview which is based in Pantheism and it did no good. No sense repeating myself.

    .

Your grasping at straws by trying to link me to Alex Jones when you have no evidence. But this isn’t the first time you have repeatedly made that and other unfounded accusation against me.

Seems that not only are you a student of Saul Alinsky, but one of Joseph Goebbels too.

“If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth”.~Joseph Goebbels

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

    Not a problem.

    Have a good one

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

    Where did I criticize it?

For your own sake, stop with the name calling and projecting yourself unto everyone you don’t like.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8FvmesaxXg Sam Fisher

Why don’t you play your game of twisting Glenn’s words and backwards logic and accuse him of siding with Satan and Hitler even tho he has not mention any of them like you do every time you come here and keep repeating Alex Jones’ rants and claim you have no clue what I am talking about or are you getting your talking points from OWS.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8FvmesaxXg Sam Fisher

You first hypocrite. “did Glenn Beck cry while saying that?” because that statement is in no way criticizing the speaker. no twist his words in a desperate attempt to make him look like he loves Hitler and Satan.

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

You have absolutely no understanding of reason or logic, nor do you of Truth.

Please, put down the shovel and stop digging the hole you are in deeper.

What does the Bible say about those who teach false doctrines?

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8FvmesaxXg Sam Fisher

And just keep proving my point why get all name cally on me if what I said was a lie? Why so defensive? Oh maybe because you did both last month in the same post. I mean really you are not fooling anyone. In fact right here it is for all to see.

    http://www.glennbeck.com/2013/11/18/the-most-important-thing-we-can-do-is-empower-ourselves-and-others/

    And the quote you made.

“What the heck is Beck peddling here?

If Glenn wants to believe that Gandhi and MLK are bigger revolutionaries than the Founders of the USA, that is his prerogative.

But who is Glenn referring to as the “original revolutionary”? wouldn’t that be Satan?

I assume Glenn means Jesus. If that is the case, I didn’t know that Gandhi, a Hindu, based his life on Jesus Christ.

For people who think Gandhi is so great, remember that he refused to join the Allies in WWII to stop Nazi Germany. Instead, this was his solution when speaking to Britain in 1940:

“I would like you to lay down the arms you have as being useless for
saving you or humanity. You will invite Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini
to take what they want of the countries you call your possessions… If
these gentlemen choose to occupy your homes, you will vacate them. If
they do not give you free passage out, you will allow yourselves, man,
woman, and child, to be slaughtered, but you will refuse to owe
    allegiance to them.” ~Gandhi

Crazy stuff going on around here.”

“But who is Glenn referring to as the “original revolutionary”? wouldn’t that be Satan?”

Funny how he never mention Satan in his speech. Tell me what does the Bible say about baring false witness?

“For people who think Gandhi is so great, remember that he refused to join the Allies in WWII to stop Nazi Germany. Instead, this was his solution when speaking to Britain in 1940:

Yes because being anti war makes you a Hitler supporter. Tell me oh great one how I am lying about your behavior?

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

Re: “Tell me oh great one how I am lying about your behavior?”

My posts do not prove anything you suggest it does. The very fact you don’t see it proves my point that you have no thinking skills.

You failed to answer my question and now I have more.

What does the Bible say about those who teach false doctrines?

Who do you think the original revolutionary was if not Satan?

BTW, thanks for c/p my previous posts so more people can see Glenn’s perversions of the truth.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8FvmesaxXg Sam Fisher

Wow you are so stupid that you think your own hypocrisy don’t stink and flat out ignore what you post and then double down on the whole Glenn Beck is a Satan worshiper. Ladies and gentlemen classic case of Narcissism. The sad thing is the more you ramble the more you discredit yourself. Your making it way to easy.

  • The Blue Tail Gadfly

    LOL, whatever.
