While American's are caught up in choosing their next president, Great Britain is fighting for its sovereignty and the future of the European Union.
European Union Parliament member, Daniel Hannan, joined The Glenn Beck Program on Wednesday to discuss what has become known as The Brexit - or Britain's exit from the European Union.
"We have a referendum on the 23rd of June," Hannan said. "It's exactly as you say. It's on whether the UK leaves the European Union. I am, as you correctly guessed, campaigning to leave. That would mean that my job disappears. I would be giving up a comfortable and well-remunerated position as a Member of the European Parliament because there wouldn't be any more British Members of the European Parliament."
Just like in America, the issue seems to come down to money. Big business wants to stay in and the people want out.
"I think it is fair to say I think both sides would acknowledge this, that the elites tend to be overwhelmingly for staying in --- big business, the mega banks, the politicians, the civil servants. The campaign to stay in is being bankrolled by Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan and a couple of big multinationals," Hannan said.
One thing that will not help the elites is enlisting the aid of America's 'Elitist in Chief.'
"I think the prime minister called in a favor and invited your president to come over and help him. And last week, Barack Obama made a speech saying, 'If you guys leave the European Union, you'll be at the back of the queue for a trade deal with us,'" Hannan said.
Being told what to do by a foreign government typically doesn't go over too well, and it comes as no surprise to Glenn.
"You guys never get involved in our politics," Glenn said. "And honestly, when a leader does tell us what to do, we're like, 'Screw you.' So I imagine it was the same effect over in England."
Ted Cruz had a much different reaction than Obama's.
"There was another much less widely reported intervention because it was much more polite," Hannan said. "This morning, in the London Times, there was an article by Ted Cruz where he said, 'Look, of course, it's for you guys to decide. I'm not going to suggest which way you vote.' In other words, he didn't do an Obama. But he said, 'If you do decide to leave, you would be first in the line for a trade deal because you guys are our friends. And it's up to you to exercise your sovereignty however you wish.'"
In addition to Ted Cruz respecting national sovereignty, it was a breath of fresh air for an outsider to appreciate the the U.S. Constitution.
"Yeah. I've become really obsessed with [the U.S. Constitution] because it applies so uncannily to our present debate about the EU. You know, there's that great line about destroying our free system of English laws. There's a line about taking over the power to control the naturalization of foreigners. Even --- this is where it gets really weird --- there's even a really eerie anticipation of the fact that my parliament, the European Parliament, every month shuffles between Brussels and Strasbourg. It's a huge expense and a great inconvenience," Hannan said.
