Michigan AG Candidate Vows in Ad ‘I Will Not Sexually Harass My Staff’

What happened?

A Democratic candidate for Michigan attorney general has a new campaign ad about sexual harassment that seems to be saying “elect me because I’m a woman.”

How did she tie her campaign to sexual harassment?

The Detroit attorney was apparently referencing Harvey Weinstein, Charlie Rose, Al Franken and other men in powerful positions who have been accused of sexual misconduct.

“We need more women in positions of power, not less,” Dana Nessel said in the campaign ad. “So when you’re choosing Michigan’s next attorney general, ask yourself this: Who can you trust most not to show you their penis in a professional setting? Is it the candidate who doesn’t have a penis? I’d say so.”

Glenn’s take:

“I’m hoping that she’s joking here,” Glenn said. Yes, it’s not possible for her to follow the Harvey Weinstein playbook for traumatizing actresses and reporters because of her anatomy, but as we learned in 2016, “running solely on gender doesn’t really work.”
