Say it ain't so, Joe
The old saying 'Yo Joe' is on
its way to being a thing of the
past. Attempting to make a new
movie about the action figure,
Paramount is changing G.I. Joe's
name to an acronym standing for
(not kidding) 'Global Integrated
Joint Operating Entity' and
making him part of an
international force because
'it's a tough sell---American
heroes'. Everyone loves an
entity, right? Mitchell Paige
was the Medal of Honor recipient
in WWII for his efforts in the
Battle of Guadalcanal on October
26, 1942, where, after all of
the other Marines in his platoon
were killed or wounded, he
operated every working machine
gun that he could get to,
creating the illusion that there
was still a large U.S. fighting
force. He single handedly
stopped two entire Japanese
regiments en route to victory.
He chuckled when Hasboro Toys
wanted to use his face on an
action figure years later, but
he gave it the go ahead
anyway--under one condition:
That G.I. Joe was ALWAYS a
United States Marine. Paige died
in 2003---nothing like stomping
on the grave of a war hero,
right Paramount?
