Response to Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy

Get Glenn Live! On TheBlaze TV

Updated: Glenn read his op/ed on radio this morning and we have added the clip above.

Editor’s note: On Friday, Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy gave an interview to The Observer where he criticized conservative politicians in America for requesting to play their hit song “Uprising”. Glenn has been a vocal fan of the band, but when Bellamy was asked about his conservative following in America he called it “weird” and claimed that right-wing libertarians were hijacking his songs and the “conspiracy theory subculture” to take down Obama.

Dear Matthew,

I read your comments in the Guardian via Rolling Stone last week and feel like with a little work we could better understand each other.

As uncomfortable as it might be for you, I will still play your songs loudly. To me your songs are anthems that beg for choruses of unity and pose the fundamental question facing the world today – can man rule himself?

In the Venn Diagram of American politics, where the circles of crimson and blue overlap, there’s a place where you and I meet. It’s a place where guys who cling to their religion, rights, and guns, connect with godless, clinched-fist-tattoo, guys.

You seem to have a pretty good grasp of comparative U.S. and European politics, but maybe there’s a pattern that you’re underestimating. Throughout history,  leaders have used music to lull young people into a sense of security and euphoria. They’ve used artists to create the illusion that they can run a country that keeps all the good and wipes out all the bad. Think Zurich 1916. Think artists getting behind guys like Lenin and Trotsky. Think of pop culture’s role in the Arab Spring. The youth rises up, power structures crumble, and worse leaders are inserted.

America, on the other hand, does not rely on leaders — we rely on the individual. Our country was built on the principles of mercy, justice, and charity — we ultimately believe that man left alone is good. That is a primary reason I disagree with Chomsky and others that you’ve touted.

American Libertarians understand that smaller government gives people freedom — the freedom to earn or lose, eat or starve, own or sell. The potential for wild success and happiness is tempered by an equal chance of failure. And it is all up to the individual to take control of their destiny.

This has been a debate since the founding of America, one that has often gotten confused. Even during the revolution — a period filled with the greatest minds to ever discuss the idea of freedom — there were the divisions that continue today. Robespierre or George Washington.  OWS or the TEA Party.

Thomas Paine didn’t see the difference at first either — sometimes the difference is too subtle.

Yet the question is an easy one: Do you believe man can rule himself? Or does he need someone ruling over him to force him to be good and charitable?

That is the fundamental divide and everything else follows. Even though faith was important to our American patriots none of them forced Paine to believe. He chose his course and in the end is remembered as a critical patriot in establishing man’s first real freedom.

They understood that we don’t all have to be in the same boat.  But rather, focused on the star chart: Are you headed toward freedom or despotism?

The power that American Libertarians like me want to pull down is power that limits the individuals right to roam and create.

Matthew, I realize that converts are pretty hard to come by when the stakes are so high and the spotlight so bright, but I thank you for singing words that resonate with man in his struggle to be free.

I wish I could leave well enough alone and just be quiet…

…but I’ve had recurring nightmares that I was loved for who I am and missed the opportunity to be a better man.

Good luck on the new record.

Glenn

I would not be as big of a fan of Muse if it were not for Glenn playing their music in the summer of 2009. They are the best live act at this time. As a Libertarian the message in Bellamy’s lyrics motivates me to get involved and fight for true freedom…

    • greywolfrs

Best live act? That is debatable.

    • Anonymous

At least now we’ve ‘outed’ MUSE as being less interested in artistic freedom for all and more about inciting the addiction to sensationalism without the use of critical thinking when considering conspiracy theories… it seems their own politics blind them to the almost blatant actions and plans of those that worship at the altar of statism.

Interesting – best luck and God’s blessing on your new record. We must win the music cultural war along with all others to restore the nation, step by step.

  • Daniel Thomas Stack

Great message. Really glad you didn’t strike back with the goonies one. But Glenn I wish you had a bullet point version to read over on air. You always mix these things up whenever you are trying to read verbatim from something you have written out in full.

Keep reporting on the White House cover up Glenn. Obama’s goal is to divide the nation and “transform” America at the hands of the New World Order into a Capitalist/Communist system where the government makes all the decisions enslaving the “have nots.” Oh and most importantly, using the poor and uneducated to complete their objective.

We must vote out Obama in November..

    • http://www.artinphoenix.com/gallery/grimm snowleopard (cat folk gallery)

Here is one interesting thing in the fundamental transformation Obama seeks: his plans have backfired in regards to the people, for many have awakened to the threat to our nation, are seeking the truth of who we are and what we will become, and to restore the nation for the future.
So Obama has caused a transformation – back to where we should be, not into communism as he envisions.

Like most despots, he fails to see any other perspective or philosophy but his own. He’s been used to little or no resistance to his wants and desires. He was not prepared by his prior life experiences for the possibility of failure.

        He is experiencing failure now.

I am of the opinion that artist’s should label their recordings, movies, art works as being intended for LIB/Progressives only and Conservatives are not welcomed to purchase their product(s). I’d happily adhere to that missive.

    • Kdiity

Ah yes, there’s that open minded and tolerant liberalism that we all know and despise… Keep up the good work comrade !!

      • shanna

I may be wrong….I took the above comment to mean that artist would lose a great deal of income if the Conservatives stop spending their money If a label read Libs only.

        • new2la

I wasn’t certain either shanna. Kdiity posed it as only a liberal would or one possing as a Conservative.. Sarcasm for sure. The yahoo poster was definitely using sarcasm. I could be totally wrong and apologize in advance for any offense.

it sounds more like he’s responding to people misinterpreting the meaning of his songs, which he would be the authority on.

      • http://twitter.com/kaia_bitterblue Bitterblue

No, he’s being an intolerant a-hole. The least he could do is be gracious about it and hope that his music could persuade Glenn Beck to change his mind, but nooooooo.

      • G0m3r

No he’s just displaying the ignorance and arrogance of youth we all were guilty of at some point. I know plenty of people his age who feel they have things all figured out.

        • VindicatorX

You are absolutely correct. I would bet that his agent and producers don’t agree with him – this will impact sales and the A&R people cringe when an artist does stuff like this. Alienating a segment of your customer base isn’t smart at all.

Impetuous and arrogant is all of this guy’s schtick. It does not drive his sales in a positive way, I am certain.

Hey Glenn, how about supporting a band that truly supports freedom and the conservative cause, and wants to work with you? https://www.facebook.com/#!/heavensrainrocks/app_2405167945

  • http://www.facebook.com/insaneserenity Dave Silva

Glenn, you’re far too late. Musicians are just as bad as hollywood actors when it comes to politics. They are trained from the beginning not to think about it at all and just agree with everyone else. Just like actors, they cannot deviate from the line everyone else takes because the industry would toss them out. The only difference in music is that country music doesn’t count, because it is based in Nashville. I’ve long given up on the music industry, and totally ignore the opinions of most musicians. I’ll listen to the music and know what the artist who wrote it cannot comprehend.

    • greywolfrs

That is not true, there are plenty of musicians who are conservative and not country. Ted Nugent, Joe Perry and Dave Mustaine, just to name a few.

  • http://youtu.be/ff8jDkOHp3U Sam Fisher

You could always get behind Creed singer lead Scott Stapp who is voting for Mitt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ni3ZXz16Hk&feature=player_embedded

      Creed Rocks!

      • http://youtu.be/ff8jDkOHp3U Sam Fisher

I love their music as well. His songs got me through High School with my sanity still intact. He puts his soul into his work and you can tell by the way he sings.

    • greywolfrs

Or Ted Nugent or Joe Perry (Aerosmith) or Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) or plenty of other conservative musicians…

      • http://youtu.be/ff8jDkOHp3U Sam Fisher

Speaking of Joe Perry did you watch Sons of Guns were he shot his cannon? Boy would I love to have his gun collection or at least fire a few of them off.

        • greywolfrs

I heard about it, but didn’t watch it. I do not watch much TV. In fact, about the only thing I watch is the L.A. Kings, 2012 Stanley Cup Champions.

          • Poison_ Monkey

            interesting

          • greywolfrs

            What’s interestng?

          • http://youtu.be/ff8jDkOHp3U Sam Fisher

If you are a gun nut you would love the show. They make such amazing things on that show that it is all most crazy. My favorite they done was the 12 Gauge Gatling Gun. http://youtu.be/0g9uLzraras

          • greywolfrs

I like guns well enough, I just do not have much time to watch TV.I make the time to watch ALL Kings games.

          • http://youtu.be/ff8jDkOHp3U Sam Fisher

They tried to make it like the original gat but some reason they could not get the thing to feed right. It was the first experimental gun. I hear you about the shells. They also tried to put together three m 16 that thing looked like a monster. I could never get into sports unless I was sitting in the stadium then I love it. it an odd thing with me I fall asleep watching a baseball game on tv but when I am there in person it just that more exciting. Maybe it’s the fresh air.

    • new2la

Glenn, drop Muse. Get behind Creed.
      Thanks Sam for letting post.

      • greywolfrs

Glenn should drop Muse and get behind Aerosmith or Megadeth. I am laughing because both of those bands are too hard-hitting for Glenn.

        • Anonymous

Megadeth! Aerosmith has not been hard htting for a long time. Their old songs are rockin’, but their newer stuff is more like Pop music. Metallica?

          • http://youtu.be/ff8jDkOHp3U Sam Fisher

I didn’t even know Aerosmith was doing new stuff.

          • Anonymous

I don’t know if they are either. Newer… for them. They are a really old band. I meant songs like the one about the elevator. Pop music.
Compared too a song like Draw the Line. Rock music.

          • http://youtu.be/ff8jDkOHp3U Sam Fisher

Rock is just so much better. More soul.

          • Anonymous

Speaking of soul, thanks for that link you gave me a while ago…Tab Benoit, smooth and bluesy…kind of like Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Casting Crowns.

          • http://youtu.be/ff8jDkOHp3U Sam Fisher

I love any song with soul in it. Find any let me know.

          • greywolfrs

Well, when one considers that Glenn likes Barry manilow, even Aerosmith’s new stuff is hard hitting…

          • Anonymous

No way…he does? Manilow…I’m not so sure about Glenn anymore. LOL…that’s almost as bad as Gary Newman. 😉

          • greywolfrs

Yeah, there was a segment where Pat was making fun of him for it.

          • Anonymous

I know you say you don’t watch aot of TV, but did you ever watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer? There was a vampire named Angel who used to sing karioke (don’t know how it’s spelled) to Barry Manilow…Now I’m picturing Glenn doing it. Singing Barry Manilow…

          • greywolfrs

Nope, never watched it. I can still imagine Glenn doing that and it is quite a funny image. I can also imagine Pat and Stu in singing back-ups, behind Glenn. LOL

            :)

          • greywolfrs

P.S. I know Glenn would never listen to them simply because of their name, but I am trying to imagine Glenn rocking out to Godsmack. That is quite funny.

          • Anonymous

I can kind of see Glenn liking some of their songs…”Speak” the truth. Nah…forget it you’re right Glenn doing “Voodoo”…ain’t gonna happen.

I really enjoy MUSE… but all of a sudden their ‘art’ to be interpreted by the listener as they deem is NOT okay when it comes to libertarians and others who don’t agree with Obama’s policies? That’s utter BS. The only ‘hijacking’ that’s being done is by BHO of our nation, and the conspiracy theorists who neglect critical thinking in their quest for truth and facts are only engaged in addiction to sensationalism.

    • greywolfrs

Or you could have just said he is an asshole.

the guy doesn’t believe in the conservative or libertarian ideology and thinks its weird that his songs are interpreted to be supporting that when that’s not the way he intended them to be interpreted.
      what’s wrong with that?
I’m a libertarian and I have nothing wrong with a guy saying people have misunderstood their work.

  • http://twitter.com/VeronicaAshe Veronica Ashe

I posted something I wrote on LiberateLiberty.com about how everyone thinks that conservatives make lame, literal, unimaginative music. While that is definitely not a valid statement,it brings to the forefront the fact that many musicians/bands create in fear of not being seen as cool if they support conservative issues/candidates. It is only when one lets go of seeking “fame” & create for the joy of creating…the freedom of music making…that they will see why being supportive of pro-constitutional issues are essential for all artists. Freedom serves a crucial spiritual purpose & equally as obvious…without individual freedom, there can be NO creative freedom. Sadly, we live in a fame-seeking culture where to be hip & popular seems too often to be the end all be all of a musicians creative pursuit. As a singer/songwriter/musician/lyricist of the wee indie band Smoldering Ashes, no longer in my 20s, with multiple sclerosis, I understand why so many creatives lamely “lean left” these days. They are driven to follow like high school students to seek popularity for the pursuit of fame, money & to be “liked” by celebs & other “cool/hipster people”. I am a libertarian…never one to care what people think of me or fitting in with the in crowd…one who is a painter (whose artwork, like her music, is labeled “outsider art” by elitists who’ve given up trying to pigeon-hole what I do, so they’ll do so, ever so condescendingly); I’m born-again, praying for my nation (America),Israel,Christians,Jewish people & for those doing evil things against the innocent/us/them. I think with both sides of my brain, so I am capable of logic. Therefore, I see that to be able to be the unique weirdling that God created me to be, I must be free so I will vote or Romney…and Ryan. 😉 If talented individuals like the members of Muse cannot understand that freedom is far more important than the pursuit of the fickle & fleeting popularity contest known as fame, then I pity them & think that they are lamer than me, doing my hot-weather weak limbed walker walk….reminiscent of a zombified, late-life Bette Davis….but then that’s just my verbosely weimared two cents. P.S. Should you ever need music to make you smile…feel free to listen to me. We are everywhere wee, unknown bands are sold.

Well music’s music and you like it or not. But history’s proved him, and others the like, well pretty much right.
As for Matty and the boys.. they’re from Devon so I wouldn’t expect too much of a Global view from them. Wished I’d seen ’em way back, but once you’ve been on Jools Holland more than about four times you’re finished. (if you cool cats get Jools over there ?).

        • greywolfrs

Sorry, but I saw the Dead Kennedys back in the day and they sucked. Being that I happen to like Punk, they were not one of the better bands. There were far better bands, such as, GBH, Fear, DI/Adolescents and the Vandals. As for Jools, we have heard Squeeze over here and they are talented. One does not have to like a particular band’s music to see the talent. Unfortunately, the Dead Kennedys are not. I realize that how good a band is, is subjective.

Respect is due I’m afraid to confess! But you’ve come full circle haven’t you ?

I’m a huge fan of Muse, but I believe Matthew Bellamy is just another useful idot. And how dare he polarize a huge percentage of people that believe in work, hard work, so that they can purchase their own media, not steal it. Well Matthew, this is one and hopefully many will follow my example, person that won’t purchase anything more with Muse on it.

  • John

Boy this a tough one for me, who sucks more Glenn Beck or Muse?

On the hand Muse’s music drones on forever and is about as catchy
as the sound of a banshee in a bear trap.

On the other, is Glenn Beck who has absolutely no college degree, but
purports to be some kind of scholar in history, economics, finance and
    politics.

I suppose, the winner would have to be Glenn Beck because in addition
to being a fraud, he also has bad taste in music.
