You don't know what you've got…

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

…until you show up for work and there's a sign on the door that says “WE ARE CLOSED. THANK YOU.”

Bennigan's restaurant has closed most of it's restaurants, although it appears some franchised stores will remain open. Damn this evil Bush economy.

This essentially eliminates most of the locations serving two of my favorite foods from back in the day.

Broccoli Bites may be the best appetizer on the planet. Basically, a broccoli/cheese mixture, breaded, deep fried, served with a very solid honey mustard. There are a lot of other versions, but Bennigan's had the best I have ever tasted.

And, of course, the devastating Monte Cristo sandwich.

The layers were as follows:
Bread
Turkey
Cheese
Bread
Cheese
Ham
Bread

All dipped in batter, deep fried, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and served with a raspberry dipping sauce. Ridiculous.

My old girlfriend worked there, and my frequent visits to eat that sandwich caused enough weight gain to probably cost me the relationship.

RIP BROCCOLI BITES
RIP MONTE CRISTO

P.S. I verbally abused several co-workers with pro-Bennigan's outbursts today. For this I am sorry. And hungry.

The return of Pepsi Blue

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

I write this-in what is now a 3hr 45min delay at O'Hare airport. To pass the time I bought a bottle of this:

Its the new flavor of Mountain Dew called 'Voltage'. It claims to be 'Dew charged with raspberry citrus flavor and ginseng.' It tastes almost identical to what I remember Pepsi Blue tasting like. So for all you dedicated fans awaiting the Pepsi Blue comeback–lucky you.

Its part of my balanced diet of airport food. Pizzeria Unos, Starbucks baked goods, and multiple giant cookies. Plus, McDonald's fries coming soon.

I wonder why I don't travel well? By the way, tomorrow I turn around and meet up for the Beck '08: Unelectable tour in OK City. I'm sure I'll be a pleasure to deal with after this trip.

***** Update: waiting for the 204 train home. Should get me into bed at approx 4am, just in time for my 5am wakeup call. I'm going to be really insightful on tomorrows (today's) show.
