872 days

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

The RNC is talking about how Barack Obama hasn't been to Iraq in 872 days (January 2006.) His opinions now make a lot of sense. Obama is simply making two year old arguments. They were bad then too, but at least they were somewhat understandable at the time.

Honestly, I don't like the “he hasn't been there in XXX days” attack very much. I never made it to Auschwitz (I'm not Obama's great uncle) but I feel like I have a good handle on what happened there, and can intelligently recommend anti-genocide policies.

But for perspective: since Obama made his last trip to Iraq, troop deaths have fallen 65%. Since right before the surge was fully implemented in May 2007-they have dropped 83%. Even the UN is saying there is hope. It's time for Obama to update his info. Maybe he needs to hope for a change in opinion.

Which One Is Worse?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Barack's “My uncle saved the Jews at Auschwitz” or Hillary's “I was dodging sniper fire”?

Honestly, it's probably too early to tell. I assume we'll hear some sort of explanation from Obama, it depends what his excuse is (and if it's even remotely close to true).

To me—unless something unforeseen pops up-I have to say I still think Hillary's is worse. The main difference? The event she lied about actually happened to her. It's at least plausible that Obama remembered hearing stories of his uncle doing something heroic at another concentration camp, or another battlefield, or at least saving a kitten near a gun shop.

Obama is remembering something about his uncle in battle 60 years ago, I can give him a little break if he messes that up-assuming his uncle was actually was in the military, did fight in WW2, and wasn't fighting for the other side—all of which have to be true. Obama couldn't be that dumb.

That doesn't mean it doesn't deserve approximately the same amount of media that Hillary's comment received-which was a lot. It will be interesting to see if the media gives Obama yet another free pass.

But as far as Hillary goes-she knew she hadn't walked through an active war zone. She knew she didn't dodge sniper fire. She knew she had a welcoming ceremony with a bunch of cute kiddies on the tarmac. She just manufactured a memory because she thought she'd get away with it—mainly because the media has been letting her get away with these sorts of things for a long time.

She has to realize that the media has chosen Obama to be the chosen one.

Until she drops out, she has to live like a conservative. Remember the rules: when you criticize, you are mean spirited. When you question, you are fear mongering. When you're white, you're racist. Now go on out there and win yourself a campaign!

UPDATE: Obama's campaign says it was his great uncle, not his uncle.

UPDATE: Obama's campaign says it was not Auschwitz (in Poland), but Ohrfruf (in Germany).

Their initial explanation appears to work with my suspicions that he just messed up the details. Again, assuming this story checks out, I don't have that big of an issue with it.

Any guy who helps liberate a Nazi concentration camp, whether it be in Germany or in Poland, is a hero/mega-hero. Obama should be getting his details right, sure, but I don't see the benefit of an intentional lie here. I know Auschwitz is the “brand name” of concentration camps, but still.

If the guy was a hero at any concentration camp, he's certainly done more than I'll ever do. I'll take one of the 4.7 million other reasons not to vote for Obama, and leave this one alone. (Need I say it again—assuming this new story checks out, which it appears it does.)

American Idol: And the winner is…

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

I didn't watch American Idol too much this season, but I wanted to see the winner announced anyway.

It was on my friends DVR — we were watching the end of the Red Sox—then flipped over to the DVR to watch Idol on delay.

(ADD MOMENT: Carrie Underwood!!!!!!!)

Anyway, here's the announcement of the winner as I saw it—and I would think everyone with Time Warner Cable watching on Tivo in Manhattan saw it as well.

YouTube Video Link

Since Idol went over on time, the DVR pops up that message at the end of the recorded video. Meaning, we didn't see the last name.

(ADD MOMENT: Speaking of Last Name—that was the name of the song Carrie Underwood sang. CARRIE UNDERWOOD!!!!!)

The video gets cut off in between the first and last name, in a competition where both people have the same first name. What are the odds?? While this is a horrible job by Fox and Idol—I will forgive them. Why? Carrie Underwood. CARRIE UNDERWOOD!!!!

(ADD MOMENT: My new column in Fusion is about the 3 best celebrities in existence. Judging by this blog, guess who is number 1?)
