“When the majority of the people know what they want, they will obtain it.”

This story was one of the most challenging to write due to the lack of first hand accounts and the differences in the oral testimony given after the fact by the key players. That said, here is a good compilation of newspaper accounts, along with a basic chronology of the events from Athens. This includes some commentary from Eleanor Roosevelt, who seems to tacitly support the citizens’ defense of their rights. She writes, in part:

“We may deplore the use of force but we must also recognize the lesson which this incident points for us all. When the majority of the people know what they want, they will obtain it.”
