Obviously, the staff at the White House is struggling financially. These people work long, hard days for modest pay. They aren’t like those rich fat cats with their big salaries and fancy mansions. Right?
Glenn discussed a statement from President Obama to kick off the second hour. “We [Obama and Robert Gibbs] have been on this ride together since I won my Senate primary in 2004. He's had a six-year stretch now where basically he's been going 24/7 with relative modest pay. I think it's natural for somebody like Robert to want to step back for a second and reflect, retool, and that, as a consequence, brings about both challenges and opportunities for the White House.”
Pat said, “$172,200 a year. These [White House Staff Members] are the same people who are continually bashing the rich, are continually hammering at those who don't need this or that, they don't need this tax break which isn't a tax break but the tax rate that's been in effect for 10 years.”
Pat added, “The average American makes about $35,000 a year. The average household pay is around 55,000. That takes two incomes to get there. He makes $172,200 and that's relatively modest? How does a President become so hypocritical? How do they become so out of touch with reality?”
“Here's Gibbs who on a daily basis bashes the rich from his podium in the White House press secretary room and now his beef is that he's been working for this relatively modest pay for six years and he wants to go make more money,” Pat said.
Glenn sarcastically said that he’s sure that President Obama doesn’t mean for Robert Gibbs to go out and get a job in the private sector so he can become a member of the “evil rich”.
“It must be that he reflects and decides to work less, which is great for the engine of America, isn't it? Or is the President a hypocrite and say that he's going to now reflect and retool and go into the private sector which, believe me, if Robert Gibbs with any actual skill, not just his connections, if he gets a job for more than $172,000 in the private sector just based solely on his skill and not connections, America is dead! The free market system is over! He couldn't mean that he's going to go out and get a higher-paying job because what does that mean? That means that somebody who works so hard can step back and reflect and say, My time is worth more and I get to decide what my time is worth, not the Federal Government! I can choose to leave this particular job and go do this or maybe start something on my own!”
