Glenn took a step away from Star Wars metaphors in order to steal a page from another science fiction movie, Minority Report. In the film, Tom Cruise works for the police who chase down criminals based on precognitive visions. In other words, the police bust people who haven’t done anything, they just MIGHT do something. In fact, people are so sure that these people are going to do something that they can charge them for a crime when they haven’t necessarily done anything yet.
Does this sound familiar? Can any comparisons be drawn between the Tom Cruise sci-fi film and the treatment of people on the right by the media? Glenn sure seemed to think so, and he probably isn’t that far off (No, he doesn’t really think there are people in a milky bath that can predict the future). Anyone who has read Sheriff Dupnik’s recent statements about the right and Rush Limbaugh could assume they have a couple of precogs in his own back room ala Minority Report.
Glenn used the ridiculous to point out how people are politicizing the Arizona tragedy? Like Rep. Brady, who wants to regulate the use of images people could interpret as violent. Like the Target logo (a bullseye!), cupid (he has a bow and arrow!), and even a symbol considered sacred by millions, the crucifix (an image whose sacred meaning is tied to a violent death).
Glenn said it on radio this morning but it bears repeating. The reactions of the media and the politicians do not make sense!
