On TV tonight, Glenn didn’t want to focus on what Obama did wrong in the State of the Union, but he tried to focus on how the individual can get their life together. To fix the country, we have to fix ourselves.
Glenn used the metaphor of a tree to describe what is happening in America. Glenn showed a cross section of tree rings, with each ring representing a year. When rings are far apart, times are good and the tree expands. When times are bad and the tree is in distress, the tree pulls back and slows down its growth. The tree adjusts to the times.
While the metaphor could easily be applied to the country, it also applies to our own lives. Glenn talked about how we have crazy hours and , especially in hard times, push ourselves harder and try to do more and more. But in the end, it’s easy to lose site of what matters.
So what do you do? We have to prioritize your life. God, family, and country should be our priorities. Find ways to bring all those things together and stay true to yourself at all times. As long as you don’t focus on “stuff”, things will stay in perspective and you’ll find ways to get to the things that really matter. But it’s important to pull back on what isn’t a priority.
He also talked about his middle seat theory. He said that people on planes and trains and subways have an aversion to people sitting next to them, usually taking the middle seat. But Glenn said that on 9/12 people were happy to have a stranger take the middle seat, and they would talk to the strangers. We have to get back to that kind of person. We have to fix ourselves.
