Last week, Glenn was very careful to say that Steve Lerner could not be confirmed as a current employee of SEIU. Thankfully, Wade Rathke came along to clarify that not only is Lerner still affiliated with SEIU, he’s on the payroll. Glenn reacted to the news on radio this morning and laid out exactly what this means. (See The Blaze story here)
“ACORN founder Wade Rathke has been busy mocking the story that broke,” Glenn said.
“And yet didn't he just say that not only is Lerner still with SEIU but he's also being paid,” Pat said.
“He says he has not been fired by SEIU. He was placed on leave last fall to think through his contribution to the union,” Glenn said.
“ A lot of people get paid to think through,” Stu joked.
Glen joked, “ I tell you what I wouldn't be doing. I would not be plotting the economic decline ‑‑ collapse of the United States of America. I'd be on a beach. I'd be like, I'm busy. I am busy and I need another Mai Tai to think this through. That's ‑‑ I'm very ‑‑ I'm this close. Wade would call me: Glenn, are you still thinking? Yes, I'm ‑‑ man, I'm close. You wrecked my concentration. Now I need another month.”
“But it's not like, though, Glenn, this guy is still going to high level meetings at SEIU. It's not like he's attending conferences among leadership,” Stu said, mocking the idea that Lerner has no influence when he is speaking at major conferences the The Left Forum.
‘This is Wade Rathke, placed on leave last fall to think through his contribution to the union but he was certainly present at the recent international executive board meeting,” Glenn said.
“The Blaze writes, ‘This is important for several reasons, not the least of which is that his ties to the plot to destroy the American economy are tied now much more closely within the ranks of the organization that time and time again President Obama has declared to be the most important to him strategically and politically. ‘”
Remember what President Obama has said about SEIU in the past? “I spent my entire adult life working with with SEIU,” the President said while campaigning. “ I didn't just suddenly discover SEIU on the campaign trail. Your agenda's been my agenda in the United States Senate. Before debating healthcare, I talked to Andy Stern and SEIU members.”
“We were so careful on SEIU to say that he was not part of SEIU when this story broke because we didn't want to smear SEIU and say that they were connected to a guy who seems to be plotting,” Glenn said. “And so we didn't want to smear the whole SEIU. And now they are coming back to us and saying, how dare you smear him by saying he's not with us.”
“And this guy is not a nobody. There's no way the president of the United States does not know Stephen Lerner or know of him. There's no way. This guy is a huge, huge power figure on the American left with the unions. Huge.”
