San Francisco is about to vote on a ban on circumcision, but many are seeing it as an attack on religion at worst and an invasion into personal parenting at best. On radio this morning, Glenn played audio of a rabbi who feels it is an attack on people of faith.
In the audio Glenn played, an anti-circumcision activist said, “Well, there is a reason for it and it's to protect the rights of men to choose for themselves. It's a human right to have intact genitals unless you choose otherwise.”
But the rabbi wasn’t buying it. “You know, I always believed that San Francisco was a "Live and let live" city. I now see that it has a curious attachment to the male foreskin. This is nothing but an attempt by radical secularists to try to portray religion as bizarre and extreme and mutilating the genitals,” he said. “This sounds an awful lot like the debate against abortion. I'm wondering, what's your stand on abortion? Should San Francisco ban abortions?”
“The medical benefits of circumcision are so evident as to be absolutely undeniable. They can easily be accessed by Googling them. This is nothing but an extreme attack on religion,” the rabbi concluded.
Glenn agreed with the rabbi, and then went to Stu who had his own encounter with an anti-circumcision advocate.
Stu, who was with his pregnant wife in the story, said, “So there's a woman there with a couple of children decides to come up and strike up the typical pregnant girl/mom conversation that I've heard 19 billion times over the past few months and so a few minutes stop, we get our ice cream and as we're pulling away with our ice cream, the woman gives us a card and says, because you're having a boy, which we are, I just wanted to give you this card. I work for a nonprofit organization that informs mothers about the choices on circumcision and the facts about it.”
