John McCain took to the Senate floor to criticize House Republicans who were still championing a Balanced Budget Amendment as a condition to raising the debt ceiling, and in the process referred to the Tea Party as “Hobbits”. Kind of insulting, right? Were Glenn, Pat, and Stu that surprised by the comments? Not really, considering the 2008 GOP Presidential nominee was so non-conservative that he failed to capture many traditional red states.
Video of the speech, courtesy of The Blaze, can be seen below:
“The Republican House that failed to raise the debt ceiling would somehow escape all blame. Then Democrats would have no choice but to pass a balanced-budget amendment and reform entitlements, and the tea-party Hobbits could return to Middle Earth having defeated Mordor.
This is the kind of crack political thinking that turned Sharron Angle and Christine O’Donnell into GOP Senate nominees.”
“So, the guy who is responsible for the 2008 disaster is criticizing the people responsible for the 2010 victory?” Stu said. “You lost in a landslide when we listen to you. You suck! I just wanted to say that.”
“That might not be the most refined piece of analysis,” he added laughing.
Glenn opted to tear down McCain’s status as a “maverick”, saying “If a maverick means I'm getting into bed with people who want bigger government, he's definitely that kind of maverick.”
Stu kept going after McCain later in the show. “This is a guy who said he was going to bankrupt the coal industry and he still won Pennsylvania! Do you know what? Let's go to John McCain, a guy who lost Indiana to a socialist! Let's go to him! That's the guy to listen to, everybody! John McCain!”
Glenn was clear to point out that while John McCain doesn’t hate the country, he still has a progressive vision for America. “John McCain doesn't hate his country. I think there are many people around the President that absolutely hate the United States of America. John McCain doesn't, but he has a progressive vision for America.”
