I read a letter, an op-ed, that came in to me from Riaz Patel. He is a gay Muslim married man with an adopted daughter from Pakistan, who has immigrated to the United States. Now, think about how many enemies this guy has.
I brought him in about six months ago, and he said, You know, I just really want to understand your perspective. I've been watching you. I think you're a guy who is on the right track, and I want to talk to you.
So we brought him in, and a lot of people in the building were very skeptical. They were like, This is exactly how I would approach you if I were the Muslim Brotherhood. But we sat down, and I challenged him. He was talking about things and said, You know, but white people, blah, blah, blah.
And I said, Why do you do that? Why do you assume all white people are that way?
He said that really bothered him after he left. He had not been around people like us that challenged him, so he realized he had just accepted the stereotypes people had fed him.
He has been talking to us, you know, a lot. And he's an amazing man. He got on a plane and went to Alaska this last weekend. He realized none of his friends know any Trump supporters, and so he went to Alaska and took three or four days, just went there and started talking to people.
He wrote the most amazing op-ed --- and you want to talk about brave --- the most amazing op-ed where he said, Boy, I didn't get it, and nobody I know in New York gets it. Here's who these Trump supporters really are. He makes the best, most compassionate case I've ever seen.
Quite honestly, he's someone people on our side would say, Stay away from him. We didn't.
At the beginning of his op-ed, he says this:
It's because I met with Glenn Beck and he challenged me to think differently than I have been. And look at what I've found.
It is truly remarkable. This is the difference we can make when we reach out to the other side. I hope you share his letter with everyone you know.
