GLENN: Roy Moore or Doug Jones? Alabama will finally decide today.
This morning, most polls have Roy Moore slightly ahead, but Fox News has Jones leading by 10 points. It’s very close.
Democrats have driven themselves insane for a year trying to figure out What Happened? How could a guy like Donald Trump defeat Hillary Clinton? Now the Left can’t understand why Doug Jones isn’t running away with this race after the creepy allegations against Roy Moore.
Why would conservatives vote for a creep? Are all conservatives creeps? Why would Christians support someone like Roy Moore? Does Christianity now condone Roy Moore-like behavior?
For many conservatives in Alabama, this is the same struggle they had in the presidential election last year when many held their nose and voted for Trump. Why would they do that?
Democrats, listen carefully, I’m going to save you a lot of time and effort because the answer is very simple – it boils down to abortion.
Being a single-issue voter isn’t sophisticated enough to many on the Left and Right. But defending life is such a fundamental principle for most conservatives that it will override most other factors, yes, even Roy Moore-type allegations. That is the political reality in America.
The deciding factor in this race wasn’t the revelation about Roy Moore’s dating habits 40 years ago – it was in September when MSNBC’s Chuck Todd asked Doug Jones his thoughts on an abortion ban 20 weeks into a pregnancy. Jones replied, “I’m not in favor of anything that is going to infringe on a woman’s right and her freedom to choose. Once that baby is born, I’m going to be there for that child. That’s where I become a right-to-lifer.”
For most conservatives in Alabama, and throughout the country, that’s way too late to be concerned about life. One Republican pollster in Alabama put it this way: “If Jones were pro-life, he’d be up 10 points.”
If Roy Moore wins today, it won’t be because Alabama voters like him – in fact, many are disgusted by him – but they hate abortion more.
