How to win the argument de jour with logic and facts
"Cap N Trade"
What the liberal whiners say:
'What do you capitalists have against creating a market based system to trade energy credits? I thought you loved capitalism?'
'Look, someone needs to reign in those greedy energy companies—otherwise they are going to keep eating up all of that energy with no consequences!'
'Yeah well someone has to do something about all this Co2 that's getting pumped into the atmosphere…if we don't act now, nuclear explosions will start randomly happening…just like I saw that in that Al Gore movie…and we'll all be running for our lives from the "flash freezing" process, trying to squeeze into a local library before the timber-wolves attack. Besides, I do you have a better idea to save us from doom?'
Your winning, logical, reasoned arguments
1. You got one thing right. The 'ism' part. Except the "ism" you're describing is…Marxism. All this boils down to is a transfer of wealth. And this is not a market---a market needs to be based on real things and cap n trade's 'market' is set by carbon police officers who assign a value to different companies. It all sounds very familiar, there was a great company a few years ago that dealt in similar nebulous trading practices; who was it again? Oh, that's right…ENRON.
2. This won't reign anyone in. It will, however, cripple business in America. The companies themselves will be fine. In fact they will find ways to make money off the system---and continue to pollute…in OTHER countries. They will just move their polluting branch of business overseas, to China, India or some other unaccountable nation that's somehow exempt from responsibility. May as well pollute where they aren't being taxed.
3. Yes, I do have a better idea. Do nothing. Absolutely nothing. Let the market sort it out. Cap N CRUNCH has a better chance of saving us than Cap N Trade.
