GLENN: Now, let's go to other solutions that people have. They are talking about new taxes. There's now a commercial in New York for a new soda tax. Here it is.
AUDIO CLIP: I see overweight and obese kids every day. I know what their future holds. Diabetes, heart disease, cancer. It is an epidemic and it's preventible. Over 10 million New Yorkers are dangerously overweight. By adding pennies to the cost of sugary sodas and drinks, we can help reduce obesity and we can use the money to stop devastating healthcare cuts in Albany. Helping New Yorkers lose weight is a matter of life and death. Tell Albany to pass the soda tax. Make New York healthier.
PAT: So if you pass a tax on soda drinks, that will make New Yorkers healthy? Wow. If you force people to pay more for their soda that actually has healing power? That's incredible. We're going to force you to stop buying soda, we're going to force you into a diet, we're going to force you to do things that you don't want to do because you don't know what's good for you. Only we do.
GLENN: Do you notice, do you notice who's in charge of our health? If this is your plan, who is in charge of your health? Who enforces that? The treasury department.
PAT: Because of the tax?
GLENN: IRS.
PAT: Yeah, just like in the prohibition days.
GLENN: Exactly right.
PAT: Yep.
GLENN: It is the same thing prohibition did and the progressives did under Woodrow Wilson. Give prohibition to the IRS and to the treasury department. It's the same story. How long have I been saying if you understand Woodrow Wilson, you will understand Barack Obama. It's the same story and it's happening again, and look how it's framed. Exactly the same way it was framed with the temperance movement. Oh, people are just, their families are coming apart. Oh, it's, we've got to stop people from drinking." All the while a guy named Bill W. says, I have the answer! And the government didn't want Bill W. and AA to be successful. He was not really a friend of the progressive movement. Why? Because it teaches people to empower themselves. I always said alcoholics are going to fix this country. You don't actually have to be an alcoholic. You just have to understand the twelve step process: You got a problem, we got a problem, we're powerless to fix it without God. Turn it all over, baby. Make a list of all the things that we've done wrong. Get it out of your system. Help others stand up.
