GLENN: This just came in from the Jerusalem Post. Glenn Beck confounded his
colleagues in the media when he brought hundreds of thousands of Americans to
the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington DC for a rally called
Restoring Honor. The speaker said nothing controversial. The crowd was
enthusiastic but not rowdy. U.S. President Barack Obama was never even mentioned
by name. In the event, the massive crowd gathered. They prayed. They celebrated
American military heroes. They listened to patriotic speeches and songs. Then
the participants picked up their garbage and went home.
So, what was it all about and why do so many people see it as a watershed
event? Although Beck called the rally Restoring Honor, it really wasn't about
restoring honor. It was more about restoring something even more important. It
was about restoring the American creed, the creed that is so engrained that it
has served as the subtext of every major political and civic speech by every
American political and civic leader since the 18th century. The American creed
has two main components. First, its core belief is that America is an
exceptional country and the American people are exceptional as a nation. Second,
it asserts that, as Abraham Lincoln said first outright, America is the last
best hope for mankind. The reason Beck's rally was a watershed event is that in
the age of Obama, millions of Americans for the first time feel the need to
reclaim what they believe is their birthright as Americans, because what
distinguishes Obama from his predecessors is that he is the first American
President who clearly rejects the American creed. This basic truth was first
brought to the public's attention during Obama's visit to Turkey last year, when
a reporter asked him, Do you subscribe, as many of your predecessors do, to the
school of American exceptionalism, that sees America as uniquely qualified to
lead the world or do you have a slightly different philosophy? Obama replied, I
believe in American exceptionalism just as I suspect the Brits believe in
British exceptionalism and Greeks believe in Greek exceptional; that is, the
President said, no, he doesn't believe in American exceptionalism. He rejects
the American creed. This is why Beck's rally was important, because it's the
building block of America's national DNA.
At the rally Beck and the crowd assembled, committed themselves to repairing
the damage that Obama is causing.
That's not quite right.
With the multitudes who congregated to the Lincoln Memorial two weeks ago,
they understood that America's greatness as a nation is entirely predicated on
its creed. If the creed is abandoned, while America may hang on for awhile, its
path to ruin will be sure. Lincoln once called America God's almost chosen
people. In saying that, he linked American history to the history of the Jews,
whereas the Jews singled ourself out as the chosen people by agreeing to accept
God's law. In Lincoln's view, Americans accepted the burdens and the gifts of a
unique national path and mission in accepting the American creed.
It goes on, but it's right. We are in a precarious place. I'm going to show
you tonight a couple of charts and a couple of facts. I'm going to show you what
the White House is now saying about the Bush tax plan. I'm going to show you
what George Soros is up to. Tomorrow and the next day, I'm going to show you the
real intent behind the kindness and compassion of those who want to save the
earth, those who just want to take care, make sure everybody has healthcare.
I'll show you who -- I'll show you the monster that hides behind, but the most
important thing that I have to share with you is that the seasons are changing
and I hope we go into spring but I fear we're going into winter, metaphorically
speaking, of course, for those bloggers who don't understand things like this.
We must reach in and be our higher self. No. We must reach in and be our highest
self. The call of the American -- the call to American -- America's greatest
generation is coming. Are we prepared to be leaders? Are we prepared to be
people that help? I know there are people, as we pointed out, there was one we
talked to on the Mall on Saturday at 10-2-10 who said to fight and kill the
capitalist class is okay. There's going to be a lot that are willing to fight,
but blessed are the peacemakers. Have you prepared to lead as a peacemaker,
because in the end they will be the ones that will win. Don't miss a second of
the Glenn Beck program. DVR the next four nights. You don't want to miss a
single episode. 5:00 o'clock on the FOX News channel.
