|McCain's rivals vow to continue |
John McCain won delegate-rich states from coast to coast on Tuesday to solidify his lead for the Republican presidential nomination as two rivals with multiple victories themselves vowed to deny him that prize.
Mitt Romney won six states but lost to McCain in California, which had the most delegates up for grabs. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee won five Southern states out of 21 GOP state contests.
We've won some of the biggest states in the country," McCain told supporters in Phoenix. An underdog for months, he proclaimed himself the front-runner and added, "I don't really mind it one bit."
A clear picture of where all the candidates stood was difficult because while nine states awarded all of their delegates to the leading vote-getter, the remaining states awarded at least some of their delegates to losing candidates based on how they fared locally and statewide.
