In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare said:
What’s in a name?
That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
That sort of talk may have been true back in 1594 but today, when the Progressives… I mean, Liberals… I mean the Progressives are playing the "name game," it doesn’t smell nearly as sweet. In fact, it stinks. Names have power, and in this case that power is being used to daze and confuse the American people… at least, that’s what they’re trying to do. But not on my watch. Let me get out my bullcrap decoder ring and see if I can help make sense of this.
You know I hate the word "Liberal," and that has absolutely nothing to do with what the word means. It has everything to do with how the Left has come to define it!
We get Liberal from the Latin liberalis, which means "of freedom." The notion of being a Liberal was here long before any of the Kennedy boys dirtied their blue blazers running around the compound in Hyannisport. Being a "Liberal" originated in the Age of the Enlightenment, and the "Liberals" of that time celebrated the new enlightened views like the value of written constitutions, free and open elections and free trade. More than anything else, Liberals believed in the unwavering importance of personal liberty. Heck, using these beliefs, I’m a Liberal! You have no idea how hard it was to type that last sentence.
English philosopher John Locke used the belief in Liberalism to further the concept of natural rights and to rally support for the protection of private property and the consent of the governed. Now there’s a Liberal who can have dinner at my table any night of the week. Johnny, we sure could use a thinker like you now.
But then the word Liberal got co-opted and corrupted to mean anything but the protection of personal liberty. Here’s that name game I’m always talking about. Once "we the people" realized that Liberals weren’t do-gooders with flowers in their hair, but instead tax and spending redistributors of wealth with heads full of Socialist beliefs…the word became, shall we say… less popular. So what did the Liberals do? Did they go back to the foundational beliefs behind their name, consider the damage that they’d done to their own country and change their thinking? Of course not. It was way easier to just order new stationery, so they changed their name…to Progressives.
The Progressive movement really got started here in America in the 1920s, and historians agree that some of the early political "successes" that the Progressives had in that time were the establishment of income taxes, increased business regulation and strict minimum-wage laws. What a mess. This is why it’s so important for Americans to know their own history—so we can recognize the dirty tricks for exactly what they are! That ’20s version of "Progressive" doesn’t sound very progressive to me or very Liberal...at least in the Age of Enlightenment, John Locke sense of the word. None other than our old pal Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his New Deal delivered the "two," in the one-two punch that the early Progressives landed on America’s jaw, a few years later. We all know how popular FDR and his policies are with me, so let’s move on before I start having a seizure.
No matter what the Clintons or Obamas or other Washington elite want us to believe they are today, being a Progressive was always as bad for America as it is right now. I wish I could say this was only a problem on the left, but Progressivism is the disease for both parties. It is an epidemic sweeping through our country. There are no RINOs —they’re progressives. Arnold Schwarzenegger is not a liberal Republican. He is a Progressive Republican. I believe this Progressive movement is designed to eat the Constitution, and when you consider that you realize the stakes in the "name game" could not be higher. We have to judge these Progressives by their actions, not their name, and hold them accountable. Let them think of their next name (maybe I can help—how about CRAPitalism?) elsewhere. Not while sitting in the nice leather chairs in Washington where our freedoms are safeguarded.
It’s always been up to "we the people" to look behind the curtain and see exactly who’s pulling the levers. Today, the great and powerful OZ is the same old variety of tax and spending redistributors of wealth with heads full of Socialist ideas that forever tainted the word Liberal. No matter how you vote or what you believe, you owe it to yourself to be aware of old, failed ideas dressed up in "new" Progressive clothing.
Later in his career, William Shakespeare gave us another great line, this time from Hamlet. He wrote simply that, "Murder will out." The most egregious of crimes cannot stay hidden no matter who commits them or what name they hide behind. Progressives, Liberals or whatever you’re calling yourselves these days, you’d better start reading something other than The New York Times. You’ve got blood on your hands, and we know it.
