On this day, 24 years ago, a major(ish) tv news personality’s career was born.
You can't just get on television and start blaming the police for brutality that they didn’t commit----you have to work up to that. It's a high calling.
So, today we honor the birth of an MSNBC career.
Happy Tawana Brawley day, Al Sharpton. On this day in 1987, a young girl claimed she was raped by police officers (among others)--claims that were later shown to be embarrassingly false. Sharpton blindly ran to her defense, immediately vilifying the police...basically saying they acted stupidly without having any of the facts. This was the moment he arrived in our collective consciousness. Who knew that blaming the police for brutality that they did not commit would be such great training for his future Occupy Wall St. coverage.
Think about that. 24 years ago, wildly blaming the police for brutality they didn't commit made you a crazy outcast (with admittedly awesome hair.)
