Nice job everyone! High five! Let’s all go out and celebrate! Wait…what?

According to FOX News, a senior State Department official has said, “The war on terror is over.”

“Now that we have killed most of al Qaida,” the source said, “now that people have come to see legitimate means of expression, people who once might have gone into al Qaida see an opportunity for a legitimate Islamism.”

The Weekly Standard:

This new outlook has, in the words of the National Journal, come from a belief among administration officials that “It is no longer the case, in other words, that every Islamist is seen as a potential accessory to terrorists.”

The National Journal explains:

The new approach is made possible by the double impact of the Arab Spring, which supplies a new means of empowerment to young Arabs other than violent jihad, and Obama’s savagely successful military drone campaign against the worst of the violent jihadists, al Qaida.

For the president himself, this new thinking comes from a “realiz[ation that] he has no choice but to cultivate the Muslim Brotherhood and other relatively ‘moderate’ Islamist groups emerging as lead political players out of the Arab Spring in Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere.”

“Why isn’t there a mission accomplished banner some place?  And if the war on terror is over, why do we have the Department of Homeland Security still?  Why did we just sign a ten‑year deal to protect Afghanistan, have our troops there for ten more years?  Why would we do that?” Glenn said.

“This is what they said:  Now that we’ve killed almost everybody in Al‑Qaeda, we don’t have to worry about that anymore and they can find legitimate ways ‑‑ think of this, that the Al‑Qaeda members can find legitimate ways to have their grievances aired like the Muslim Brotherhood.”

“Well, it comes full circle.  Al‑Qaeda came out of the Muslim Brotherhood, as did Hamas and now they are going back into the Muslim Brotherhood because we’ve made them legitimate.”

“So if Al‑Qaeda doesn’t exist, if the Muslim Brotherhood isn’t a problem, if there’s no terror in the whole world, what is this security apparatus for?  Who’s our enemy?  Who’s the enemy?  Big businesses over in Egypt?  Because they’re going for small business?  Who’s the enemy?  Or is our military now just a global force for good?  Are they going to bring everybody Hershey chocolate bars?  Why, why is the DOJ ramping up?  Why is, why is our entire government ramping up?  For what?  If there’s no enemy, shouldn’t we be ramping down?  I contend our government is about to officially change sides.  Because none of this makes any sense.”
