      This isn’t broken down by percentage of their respective populations though, just percentage of recipients. By percentage of population, 5% of all whites are on welfare, 27% of all blacks are. I feel for you. It is a sad state of affairs when people will throw their vote away for free crap. They are all institutionalized and they know nothing else. It is no wonder the Social Security system is overburdened. There was obviously nothing physically wrong with that woman, at least not to the degree of preventing her from working for a living, but a social worker at SSA or the state probably got her through the system and now she, who probably never worked and paid into the system, is on disability for life – for being ignorant. This is why seniors who are legitimate recipients of SS get so little to rely on – it’s because of “ticks” like this woman. She could do something to support herself, but by golly, Uncle Sugar will give her free phones, food, housing and even money on top of that!

This kind of corrupt practice which is deeply rooted in the so-called safety net is why it is going broke. Of course, there is a lot of corrupt business going on from providers like doctors and hospitals that over-bill, or even submit for payments on people who don’t even exist. Billions of dollars go to illegitimate frauds on both sides of the Social Security/medicaid/medicare system every year, and at no time has there been a real effort made to audit and clean up the system because “you can’t mess with social security”.

It is no wonder the system is broken.

My son had a similar 5th grade class election. Kids were giving out free stuff asking for votes. It. Became a popularity contest. The kids who gave out the best stuff won the elections. My son and others knew they were trying to buy votes. I contacted the teacher to ask if that was part of the lesson, showing how some politicians will buy votes and make unrealistic promises. She was offended, but I was actually being serious. I wanted her to bring this practice to their attention as an educational part of the project. They also had to make up hand signs such as we do having a hand over the heart during the pledge. I was not the only concerned parent apparently. They had done the project for years…but that was the last year they did the elections.

Many seniors don’t realize their SS is taxed as income….she can thank a democrat for that. Google it. Short story: My brother had an accountant he used for many years. One day a few months ago, He let out he voted for Obama and will do so again. My brother tried to enlighten him to no avail. The accountant is no longer working for him; he was fired! The moral of the story is, if you play with fire, you will get burnt. His accountant believed because his boss was one of the 1%, he should pay more in taxes. He was working as a retired accountant and hiding that extra income he received from the government. I am so very frustrated. I am black, but a staunch conservative. I hate that people assume that because of my skin color that I sympathize with this woman’s entitlement mentality. I work very hard (I have FOUR jobs) for every penny that I earn. To have the government take my money and do THIS with it sickens me. This assumes that I am not a good steward of my income and that the government does a better job with it than I ever would. I also have to work doubly hard to demonstrate that I can hold my own. I speak proper English, work hard to spell words accurately and write grammatically correctly. I am a classically trained musician. I own my own business. I am a paid church musician and adjunct music instructor. People don’t see this–they see my color and it is downhill after that. I was literally sickened while reading some of the comments about this woman–she is a monument to Progressivism. I wondered how many people would feel the same about me because of my skin color whether I opened my mouth or not. It is a very broken world. It is sad to see this–I often wonder what a positive difference people like this would have made if things were different. Let us fight hard to make sure that this does not continue.

Melody, I am sure some people judge you by your skin, but a lot of us do not. I look at the person. I would see who and what you are. You hang in there. We respect people like you.   Well, it’s just as sickening when I find myself being called a White Supremacist, or a Right Wing extremist because of the fact that I am white, yet it happens almost every time I post an opinion somewhere. I whole-heartedly agree with everything you are saying, ESPECIALLY about the part when you mention racism and discrimination is NOT limited to just the African-Americans.

Well, I understand your frustration, but let’s be realistic for minute. If any white person stood up in front of these people and said what you just said, they would be blown off as a cracker trying to control them. We should all know by now that skin color has nothing to do with being right or wrong. There are plenty of examples in every skin color of people participating in activities representing both clearly “right” and clearly “wrong” positions.

And just as there are plenty of idiot liberals (seems to be the lion’s share when it comes to liberals) there are plenty of idiot conservatives that will go right along with the race vs. race dynamic. It’s up to those of us that know better to rise above no matter what.

I would be happy to have you as a neighbour, So many ppl want things for free, like that lady.. why cuz she is a ass kisser..WE do not need Obama for another 4 years as president. It will only get worse if he is re-elected. And for that I will not get anything, I can not get health insurance or social security or welfare, because I live if my ex husband. Actually it was started in 1996 under… drum roll please… Bill Clinton. It was called the Telecommunications Act. It provided assistance for land-line service to low income individuals and families. The FCC expanded the act to include 60 minutes of free service on Tracfones (cell phones) starting in 2008.
And, yes we pay for it. 50 cents a month. It’s listed on your phone bill (or it may not) as the Universal Connectivity Fee (AKA Universal Service Fund or USF).
Try to get your information from other sources than huffpo or dailykos.

Actually the phone program for low income people started with Ronald Reagan & the “free” cell phone program is funded by that original program. Of course it wasn’t such a HUGE giveaway at the time & every black & hispanic wasn’t automatically given a phone regardless of income or ability to work.

People like are what really pisses me off about the system we currently live in. I drive a public transit bus for a living(non-union), I struggle to keep my 14 year old truck on the road, pay my bills and put food on the table for my children to eat. My wife and I have no savings no health insurence, becuase we can’t afford the premiums. My children do their school required internet research on my cheap walmart cell phone because we can’t afford the extra expense of a computer. Yet we do not qualify for any public assistence. The people that do “qualify”, like the woman shown above, get handed everything while contributing nothing. I am really getting sick and tired of seeing yet another person at walmart driving a new lexus, talking on their new Iphone, and paying for their groceries with food stamps. It has got to stop!

That’s what lack of pride and self-respect does to people. I’m Japanese and the Japanese people who were interned during WW II did everything they could to keep their pride and self-respect after being released from the internment camps. They went back to find work, went back to school, and supported the Government that ordered their evacuation. They didn’t sit around complaining, waiting for a hand-out. Most cannot talk about their experience because they feel humilated but I have never heard one person use the internment camps as an excuse to get free stuff from the Government.

If you do your OWN research, you’ll find the “Obama Phone” doesn’t exist at all. Check the history of this program for not just cell phones, but land lines as well. It started before Obama was elected. You’re right about this woman being uneducated, but if you just take one person’s word for something, and don’t look for the facts yourself, you’re just as bad as she is. This applies to everyone–Republican and Democrat.

Actually you’re correct and not correct. It was originally conceived as a Lifeline program back in the 1980’s. It was supposed to help low-income Americans have telephone access to first res-ponders during an emergency.

Under Obama the plan has increased from 700 million + to approximately 1.6 billion. Restrictions have been eased and in some places they have been removed completely.

I’m a libertarian and I despise Obama as President. But there is way too much misinformation surrounding this one. Yeah, the lady THINKS Obama gave her a free phone and she thinks that she’s entitled to all kinds of free stuff and that’s horrible. That’s part of the problem right now, there really are way too many people not only dependent on the government, but they think they deserve things like free cell phones, free internet, free laptops, etc. and that needs to stop. However, the free cell phone program was started under George W. Bush. It did go into effect after Obama took office, but he had nothing to do with it. More proof that you republicans are just as bad (especially Bush Jr.) as the democrats. You’re all calling her ignorant (and you’re right, she is), but then why are you taking her word that Obama started the free cell phone program without doing a little research first? Ten seconds on google.
