Mark Burnett and Roma Downey discuss their new series The Bible on The Glenn Beck Program

Get Glenn Live! On TheBlaze TV

Sunday night at 7/8c, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, Jr.’s new series The Bible will debut on The History Channel. Glenn has already seen the first few episodes, and believes it could end up being one of the most influential and impactful pieces of entertainment tackling The Bible in decades. He invited the duo onto his show Friday night to discuss the upcoming series.

Why is Jesus always portrayed as a handsome British-looking white guy?  He would have been about 5 foot 3 inches, 110 lbs, broad nose, dark complexion, like other Jews of the time.

  • http://www.theconservativepush.webs.com/ SoThere

You’re an Atheist, you don’t believe in Jesus so what’s your point? Your opinion is irrelevant here bigot.

  • Anonymous

Looks like we’re getting the cliff notes version.  Lots of important detail being left out, wouldn’t want to offend anyone or not be politically correct.

  • Anonymous

I’m not an atheist or a bigot but I agree with Landree’s point.  Seek truth

  • Anonymous

yeah attack the person and not the idea.

  • http://www.theconservativepush.webs.com/ SoThere

I’ve heard his bigoted and racist ideas before. Buzz off.

Oh. OK. So now it’s perfectly fine to like History Channel this month because Glenn said so? Thank you Most Magnificent One. Finally a voice of (t)reason to tell us what/how to think because he thinks it. #hypocrisyreignssupreme

Part 1 was very good–although we could have done WITHOUT THE JEDI-ANGELS (TROUNCING SODOM) STUFF!!
    LOL.
Would have preferred that they include GOD addressing the naked Adam and Eve and banishing them from EDEN, instead of wasting so much time on sword fighting and hacking the evil ones…

  • Anonymous

Well, one could ask a similar question about Pharoah. He probably was NOT a YUL BRYNNER or TELLY SAVALAS kind of guy!

    Quote:
“Of what race, then, were the Egyptians? They certainly were not white
in any sense of the modern use of that word–neither in color nor
physical measurement, in hair nor countenance, in language nor social
customs. They stood in relationship nearest the N e.  gr.o race in earliest
times, and then gradually through the infiltration of Mediterranean and
Semitic elements became what would be described in America as a light
mulatto stock of Octoroons or Quadroons. This stock was varied
continually: now by new infiltration of N e. gr.o blood from the south, now
by Ne.gr. oid and Semitic blood from the east, now by Berber types from the
    north and west.
Egyptian monuments show distinctly Ne . gr .o and mulatto faces.
Herodotus, in an incontrovertible passage, alludes to the Egyptians as
“black and curly-haired” 1–a peculiarly significant statement from one used to the brunette Mediterranean type; in another passage,
concerning the fable of the Dodonian Oracle, he again alludes to the
swarthy color of the Egyptians as exceedingly dark and even black.
Æschylus, mentioning a boat seen from the shore, declares that its crew
are Egyptians, because of their black complexions.”

P.S. The BEST “JESUS” in films was MAX VON SYDOW (Greatest Story Ever Told, 1965), who was not “British-looking.” He’s a Swede, now in his 80s–and, how interesting that a guy named ADOLF should play JESUS so convincingly!

This was an audacious task taken on by Mark and Roma. It’s impossible to do justice to the entire Bible in 10 hours, but they had to strike some sort of balance with what they could do. I didn’t love everything they did with the first 2 hours, and I would have tried to include the story of Joseph being sold into servitude and ending up in Egypt – a critical element of the Jewish history – but I still very much enjoyed the show. It was well-directed, well-acted, and well-produced.

They should be commended, and we should rejoice both in their courage for doing this and in their determination to do it well.

Watch bits and pieces ( a New York Rangers game was on) but from what I seen The Bible should have been shown not on History Channel but Comedy Central I seen High School Productions with better costumes and how is it everyone in the Old Testament spoke perfect English ?

The New Your Post ask the same question

Interesting. If it’s true that the human race started in Africa and headed east then north, your description of Egyptians is consistent. Massive DNA studies have supported the theory that human origins started in Africa and spread through Arabia and India. Sydow didn’t look like what Jesus would have looked like either. Maybe producers think there’s some marketing issue with an accurate profile. Those kinds of period productions must be very expensive, and maybe they think popular actors will increase revenue.

If you want Aramaic and Hebrew, watch “The Passion”.

Oh liberal bigotry it never gets old.

  • http://youtu.be/R7MC2wu49Cw Sam Fisher

Is that why you voted for Obama because everything he says
    is a fairy tale.

  • Joseph DeGraw

I found the show somewhat entertaining but it did leave out some facts that are quite relevant to the story. (1) During the crossing of the red sea there was a “pillar of fire” that prevented Ramses and his army from getting to them until the waters parted. (2) While Moses was on mount Sinai receiving the ten commandments the people were reverting to their old habits. Moses was so angry when he returned that he threw the tablets at the people that would not repent thus giving the Lords judgment on them.  Leaving these facts out of the story detracts and does not follow what the bible says. I find the 1950s version “The Ten Commandments” a better representation of the times then this movie.

  • http://youtu.be/R7MC2wu49Cw Sam Fisher

Yes I was a little disappointed with that but they probably did that because of the time they had to tell the story.

  • Joseph DeGraw

I dont want to sound picky but its important to show those things. The are very relevant to the story. Makes me wonder what other facts they might leave out. I do agree with you on the time constraints and thats really too bad. I bet the special effects on the pillar of fire would have been quite something.

  • Joseph DeGraw

Then it wasnt just me that felt the angels in Sodum looked like Japanese Samari warriors??? I also commend them for their efforts but I think they really didnt do the Bible justice. Interesting that they posted at the beginning of the movie that it would be as “factual as possible”. But it was not.

  • http://youtu.be/R7MC2wu49Cw Sam Fisher

I agree I wished they did add it and also I wished they would have had speak more often than he did. to people who never read the Bible that would have been a little confusing.

  • Joseph DeGraw

I would have used a deeper voice for God also. The voice they used sounded like a teenager. Do you know where the film was made? Was it Hollywood types that did it? Anyways, Thanks for your replies. Have a great day!

Yup you liberals want us to respect the Muslim religion but yet attack Christians for believing in a god. Do you see your own hypocrisy?

    Buzz off moron.

Max Von Sydow was the BEST, most “convincing” JESUS of any ever portrayed on screen, imo. And it had less to do with his LOOKS than his PATHOS, his acting skills, and his HEART (which comes through in everything he does).

We could have done without that line in the film, though, where a disciple says “Jesus–that’s a good name!” and Jesus says “THANK YOU!” Or the line where Jesus mentions walking down “all those long, dusty roads”… !
    LOL.

Nonetheless, Greatest Story Ever Told is the greatest Jesus movie ever made, and we watch it every Easter.  :-)

Hope future segments don’t have as much of that Hollywood-sword-fighting/slewing of evil ones, but they probably will–in order to “appeal” to the younger crowd, so hooked on video games with lots of blood and gore.

Really hope they adhere closer to the BIBLE and don’t leave out important parts. That scene in EDEN should have been included, even though it would’ve been tricky to portray a talking snake–We don’t need MUPPET-figures mixed in with things! LOL.
(That part where Lot’s wife turned to a pillar of salt was “cool.”)

It’s nice to see a “chronological” portrayal of Bible stories, and we’re glad they made this series. Kind of weird to go from the Christian overview on History Channel directly into the Pagan VIKINGS, though. (We switched over to AMISH MAFIA, which was a startling contrast to the Old Testament, too!) LOL.

“While Moses was on mount Sinai receiving the ten commandments the people
were reverting to their old habits. Moses was so angry when he returned
that he threw the tablets at the people that would not repent thus
giving the Lords judgment on them.”

Glad you mentioned this. We were waiting for Moses to descend with the tablets and find the people worshiping the golden calf–and were disappointed that it was not included.

And that Moses guy looked a bit too much like some guy who’d hang out in an Irish pub. But the eye makeup on the Pharoah and his son was pretty “cool.”  LOL.

It will be “interesting” to see what happens with Hagar, Ishmael and their descendants… Hope they do cover this. (Have a feeling it will be glossed over… but could be wrong…)

Oh come on now, we speak English here, I am not fluent in Hebrew, I need something in English to understand it.  Or at least subtitles.  I’m fairly certain that you just don’t like the Bible, which is fine it doesn’t concern me in the least.  You only said what you said here because you don’t believe in God.  That’s fine, that’s you, I don’t care.  You’ve just held this production to a higher standard than anything else.  Watch your Rangers game and shut up.

  • Anonymous

Me I’m Catholic I believe in God. but I also understand that the Old Testament is not to be taken literally as fact. Take the Ark as a example our biggest ships today would not be big enough 2 hold 2 of every animal. There are millions of different animals. But some guy with his family built a ship that big. ? Come on

  • Anonymous

    I’ll check it out.

According to Landree, you have a low IQ. Nice to hear from you garak99.

  • Anonymous

Agreed. Overall, it was good and will probably watch future segments.

BTW, loved the SCOTTISH accent that Noah had! (Was that Sean Connery by any chance?!)

  • Anonymous

Oh, come now. It wasn’t GOOFY; overall, it was very well done. Don’t get too hung up on irrelevant details (like Scottish accents or that funky jagged-edged decor that Pharoah was wearing!)…

Seriously… You should fix Roma Downey’s name in this, she even mentioned during the phone interview; there is no ‘Jr.’

  • Brian Johnson

Bert, you say that whether or not someone believes in god or
the bible is of no concern to you, you don’t care. I’m glad to hear that but
the problem with people of faith (besides being delusional) is that most of
them care very much that others share their beliefs and feel the need to
promote them. The guy in the video said he wishes his particular religious tome
be read in public schools. I believe that indoctrinating children with religion
is tantamount to abuse, it’s bad enough people do it to their own kids but don’t
do it everyone else’s kids too.

  • Anonymous

Delusional? You want to talk delusional? Just look at all the DELUDED ONES who keep voting for the 0-guy who is tearing America down. Some of those deluded ones actually believe HE is the “MESSIAH.” Now THAT is delusional!

And “indoctrinating children with religion” (as you so cynically put it)  is not tantamount to abuse; it is giving them a spiritual foundation and Code of Ethics to steer them through life. Life is hard enough even with these spiritual/ethical tools, but never being exposed to them? That explains MUCH of what’s going on in America and the world these days.

  • http://twitter.com/SonsofReagan Sons of Reagan

Glenn saw this ahead of time and recommended it????? He’s gone Hollywood and wants to be loved by the Liberals. He wants to be next Walt Disney. Maybe we can freeze him now, thaw him out later for some other poor slobs to be fooled by!
