Obama: ‘U.S. persons’ are safe from surveillance

Get Glenn Live! On TheBlaze TV

President Obama, lauded by many for his prowess as an orator, used an interesting choice of words during an interview with Charlie Rose. When discussing the scope of the NSA surveillance programs, the president made seemed to blur the lines as to who is safe from the snooping.

OBAMA: What I can say unequivocally is that if you are a U.S. person, the NSA cannot listen to your telephone calls, and the NSA cannot target your emails.

(emphasis added)

“I don’t know what a U.S. person is,” Glenn said on radio this morning. “I don’t know what a U.S. person is.”

“A U.S. person is anybody who’s in the U.S. maybe,” Pat suggested, “because that includes illegal aliens?”

It isn’t clear what President Obama meant when he said ‘person’ instead of ‘citizen.’ But based on the ongoing immigration debate in this country, it is safe to assume Obama is looking to blur the line between U.S. citizens and people who just so happen to be in the U.S.

“You are a U.S. person. So you are a person what has come into the U.S. You’re here illegally, you’re here for a job, you’re here for whatever, you’re just trying to make your way through the world,” Glenn said. “Okay. So you’re a terrorist. I’m a U.S. person. So if you’re a U.S. person that happens to be a terrorist, can we spy on you? Can we eavesdrop on you? Can we listen to your phone calls? Do we have anything we can do on a U.S. person? How do we know who a U.S. person is?”

If you think back to a few years ago, Michelle Obama vowed that her and her husband would work to change the language and change the culture, and it looks like he may have succeeded in doing just that.

“They have certainly fulfilled that promise,” Pat said. “Of all the promises they made, that’s definitely one kept.”

Obama is, as usual, doing his double talk: illegals, terrorists, Islamic groups, those who are allied or cronies of the Federal government and the Democrat Communists are to be immune from any and all surveillance.

Everyone else, those who are US Citizens or Conservatives, will be kept under constant watch and specifically targeted as the opportunity and occasion arises to benefit the leftists.

Change our language and our culture?

True, but in a way they have not foreseen; for the people of the nation are awakening, and are becoming aware of the mortal danger our nation, our culture, and our freedom. May this great awakening continue, and may it shake the Democrats to the core of their foundations.

You were correct this morning.  They are gathering all the info and they will use it as needed to attack their enemies just as they were doing with the IRS.  This evil president Trojan horse muslim come to destroy the United States aids and supplies arms to muslim brotherhood types but wants to take away the guns of decent American citizens.
Go ahead with Glenns MLK plan, but in the mean time, Red states should beign preparing for the collapse of the union and be ready with a new agreement between the red states wanting to be rid of the blue states BS.  Each red stater should keep guns and ammo.   We should also keep as much as we can afford in gold and silver to restart a new currency back by metals when this “fiath” paper crashes.

  • landofaahs

We need plans ABCDEF and G.  Let Glenn go with the MLK strategy.  When(IF) that fails, plan B.  We must be prepared to restart with a Red state mentality and unity agreement.

I really feel safer now, the “Liar-in-Chief ” that learns about all the scandals  from the daily news reports has assured me that everyone is safe.

He couldn’t tell the truth if someone showed it to him on the five O’clock news.  He’s Mr. “I know nothing”.

“Obama is looking to blur the line between U.S. citizens and people who just so happen to be in the U.S.”
The two terrorists in Boston were in the U.S. so that explains why the FBI wasn’t aware that they were planning to plant bombs in Boston.  The  FBI, NSA, and everyone else were busy investigating the Tea Party, Obama’s biggest target in the country.

For those who think they have nothing to hide, well maybe your mother does, your brother does, your child.  It doesn’t have to be you they can do damage to.  Not to mention, so many rules and laws have been passed through regulation, you won’t even know you have broken one until it is pointed out to you…….through the use of coercion.   Information is power.

  • Douglas W. Rodrigues

Barack Obama cannot be trusted to speak the truth about ANYTHING.  He’s demonstrated that he will lie through his teeth, and what he says has no relationship to reality.  As truth goes, I place him on the same believable level as a dishonest Used Car Salesman.

I think Obama’s word choice has something also to do with the push for people to drop national citizenship in favor of global citizenship and global governance.  A “U.S. person”?

Obama is correct in this usage.

God, this anti-American, moslem obumhole is a retard.  How the hell do you in the US. put up with that jackass? You have a U.S. person for a ‘president’, not a U.S. Citizen.

  • Anonymous

So… That would mean he lied when he said that the NSA wouldn’t spy on US Persons, because the evidence shows that the NSA IS spying on US Persons by collecting Verizon phone records, trying to get Facebook and Google records, and all the other stuff that the NSA has already collected on the US Persons that the president claims are not being spied on.
    Okay, got it.

I do not condone this unconstitutional act against Americans.

I think 2.3 (b) is clear and documents an illegal acts by the NSA:

2.3 (b) Information constituting foreign intelligence or
counterintelligence, including such information concerning corporations
or other commercial organizations. Collection within the United States
of foreign intelligence not otherwise obtainable shall be undertaken by
the FBI or, when significant foreign intelligence is sought, by other
authorized agencies of the Intelligence Community, provided that >>>>>>>>>>>>>>no
foreign intelligence collection by such agencies may be undertaken for

he  justifies the nsa’s actions as fighting back/keeping al queda at bay. and yet,he also says we’ve defeated terrorism;al queda is defunct he says,(even though we are arming them, aka, the syrian rebels). so which is it? can’t have it both ways.just like we can’t have a hunger problem in this country when half the population is on food stamps, kids get t least 2 free meals a day at school.are they starving? or do we have an obesity problem? can’t have it both ways.

All we have to now is prove that the NSA was used as a tool against Americans and Obama and his worthless Administration are out!

  • Mike Nelson

    Bah, US citizenship.

    Now, Personhood… THAT’s worth something!

I wonder if a “US Person” becomes an “Iranian Person” when they cross the border?

I wonder: would that make Edward Snowden a “Chinese Person” who can now be “legally killed as an enemy combatant” due to lacking US citizenship rights?

Maybe that’s why the FBI didn’t get authorization to investigate Ambassador Christopher Stevens since he was at the time a “Libyan Person”…

The term “U.S. person” is used in the context of data collection and intelligence by the United States, particularly with respect to the provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. If information from, about, or to a U.S. person who is not a named terrorist is captured in the course of U.S. foreign intelligence activities, there are strict rules about preserving the anonymity of such a person in any subsequent intelligence report. Only if the U.S. person information is relevant to the report, is it included.

According to the National Security Agency web site, Federal law and executive order define a United States person as any of the following:[1]

a citizen of the United States

an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence

an unincorporated association with a substantial number of members who are citizens of the U.S. or are aliens lawfully admitted for permanent residence

a corporation that is incorporated in the U.S.

I am not a US person nor a citizen – I am one of We The People who can act to protect my nation and its Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic. And I will do so without reservation.  One thing I know is that Obscumbo is not a US person and certainly no one called upon either he or his atrocious wife to change the language or the culture!

  • Anonymous

I too found that “U.S. person” construction to be an evasion. I have personal experience with the differences of status.

I was born in 1935 in NYC to parents who were resident aliens (“green carders”). My father was Canadian and my mother English – they both carried British passports (Canada was still technically ruled by the Governor General, an appointee of the Crown). I traveled on their passports as a child – children didn’t have their own passports then. I had dual citizenship, in effect, until I attained majority (which was 21 then). It wasn’t actually dual citizenship as I couldn’t vote in either country.

My parents chose to remain resident aliens for the rest of their lives, they were both loyal subjects of the Crown (even after Canada broke from the formal relationship with the Crown my father remained a loyalist). They paid their U.S. taxes, they brought me up as an American. In fact, when some new members of the Daughters of the British Empire (my mother was an officer) wanted to change the name to The British American Society she made an impassioned speech. “There is no such thing as a British/American – we are British and our children born here are American. It is our job to raise them as Americans and die out.”

They never complained about not having a vote, even though they lived here for over sixty years and participated in the economy productively. They knew it was their choice. They never participated in any politics on the few occasions when we had disagreements with their home countries. They did support Bundles for Britain during the war when relatives were being bombed (as did I).

On graduation from college I joined the USNR through OCS and served three years active duty on a destroyer – I was given Top Secret clearance, but denied Top Secret, Cryptographic as I had so many immediate relatives in foreign countries that the background check would have bee too expensive. I was assured that if I “shipped over” after my reserve tour and went “regular” they would do the background then. A perfectly logical procedure.

I’m going to digress for a moment to another topic, dual citizenship. That was not allowed by the US at the time. My father wanted me to join the RCAF (my initial application was for Marine Aviation) – “I don’t want you to fly, but if you have to at least join and outfit with tradition” (he was  RCAF and a bit biased . Had I done so I would have lost my US citizenship. At the time any overt action, such as serving in a foreign military or voting in a foreign election, was considered a denial of one’s US citizenship. Somewhere over the years that has changed.

To complete the circle let me come back to “U.S. persons”. U.S. citizens are obviously in that category. Were my parents still alive I think they would also qualify as U.S. persons – long time resident aliens. But the very vagueness of the term indicates that the President is waffling (as usual). The term “resident alien” had a specific meaning in the old days – a legal meaning. A resident alien was one who had qualified for a “green card” – and that green card had to be renewed each year by a personal visit to the U.S. Post Office (or Immigration and Naturalization) with certain exceptions – I was able to make the appearance for my mother after my father died, and she was immobilized with cancer, but had to bring a lot of documentation.

And these were solid “citizens” of the U.S., my father a “pioneer” (initial member) of Bell Labs as a research physicist (and had the speculative idea that led the transistor – although not the developer).

The President could easily have said U.S. citizens and resident aliens (although the illegals are “resident” in fact, they aren’t in law).

I have gone on too long, as usual – but I was annoyed by his comment. I am also annoyed by the idea of dual citizenship – whether a native born American who overtly acts in support of his ancestral nation (except in such things as fund raising for charitable purposes – Bundles for Britain or support of Israeli poor – or Afghani poor – or any other non-political matter), or a foreign born U.S. citizen who acts overtly to excercise his old citizenship.

I welcome all from anywhere who want to live in and support America. I welcome those who, like my parents, want to retain an emotional loyalty to their homeland, but raise their children as Americans. My parents participated in the community – Cub Scout den mother, school board activities (but no vote). And I’ve known others who did the same from non-English speaking nations – English even at home, even if the parents were still learning it.

Here’s to the melting pot, and a curse on the rainbow coalition. The great fallacy of “diversity” is that it isn’t diverse – it is a separation of culture rather than a mixing of the best of all.

    Best, Jon

Obama is a liar.  If the other countries find out that they have also been targeted he will be in big trouble.  What good has tampering with everyones private conversations helped in protecting.  If they have stopped 50 times, terrorists from bombing where are they? why haven’t they been put in prison and why haven’t the American people heard about it?  Lies just all Lies. Bingo! I agree that nationalism is being gently played out in language, because new world order wasn’t popular. They moved from nwo phrase, to global governance, which is the same agenda! Of the people considered to be dangerous to our nation, are those who are patroits, and believe in constitutional law. BO, is the mole to put nwo in play. They have tried to use climate, agriculture, water rights, etc. to advance program. Mr Kerry, stated a couple of weeks ago that our prez would sign the new arms treaty being drafted by UN. Ms C, went to senate twice with international arms treaty before last election. The first was to disarm private citizens, and the second was to provide a register of privately owned weapons. I believe it was 2009, that a reporter was stopping people on streets of nyc, and ask them if they would rather be US citizen, or a global citizen. About 40 percent said global citizen.

  • Snorri

The term “a U.S. person” in liberal progressive New Speak means anyone the government wants it to. It’s akin a Soviet Commissar saying “you have nothing to fear unless your name is on the list”. But the list was made from the local telephone directory. Basically, in the name of security everyone can be subjected to scrutiny either in accord with the Constitution or otherwise. At least the NSA’s data collection is less intrusive than the Chinese Communist’s system of  snoopy, old lady busybodies which seems to be more effective than NSA’s. As for the IRS’s targeting political groups, want to bet that only those smirkingly awful line dancers and the Star Trekers get disciplined / prosecuted. An appropriate judgement would be to make them watch those videos again and again.

Oops, another inconvient truth revealed on a Friday. Suddenly, 4 instances of drones HAVE been used on US person(s). One instance was a reported hostage situation. But, immediately the defense was that govt had the RIGHT to use every law enforcement tool available, when dealing with a crime. This is getting hairy fast! This nation doesn’t have much longer, imo.

BTW, when did the FBI get arresting authority? Didn’t they used to have to get local law enforcement to do it? Weren’t they only suppose to have investigative powers?
