If this St. Louis family didn’t own a gun, who knows what would have happened

You might want to remember this story the next time someone starts an argument about gun control.

On Monday night, two masked and armed men approached a seventeen year old girl outside of her St. Louis home. They grabbed her, forced themselves into her house, and used her as a human shield while her parents watched the scene unfold from the inside. It could have been a tragedy. But it wasn’t.

Why? Because the family had at least two firearms in the house to defend themselves and their daughter from the attackers.

When the girl’s father saw the men attack his daughter and approach the door, he and his wife both went for their firearms. He fired several shots, hitting both of the invaders. The man holding his daughter, Terrell Johnson, collapsed in the home and was later pronounced dead.

The second attacker, Cortez McClinton, was hit but fled the scene. McClinton’s brother drove him to the hospital where he was treated for gunshot wounds to his chest and thighs. He was soon charged with second-degree murder, kidnapping, burglary and armed criminal action.

It doesn’t matter. Logic and facts doesn’t matter to gun grabbers. Limiting human rights doesn’t have to do with safety or the greater good; it has to do with CONTROL. The truth will not help them gain control, therefore this story doesn’t matter to them.

  • deltarogue08

Liberals and logic is like oil and water. I’d love to see a gun grabbing Liberal argue about gun control after reading this article.

  • Rob Wolgemuth

He almost killed his daughter with that gun. And who, upon witnessing their daughter under attack, turns around and runs in the other direction? Seems like a whole lot of luck was involved in the evasion of tragedy here.

  • JBinGA

there are a lot of stories like this and they should all be shown nationwide to prove the point that criminals will always have guns and law abiding citizens should always have the right to have one to protect themselves and their families!

As a conservative, I understand why liberals are against guns. Without guns, these kids wouldn’t have the courage to go to schools and kill other children, and teachers. We just need to figure out a way to keep guns away from the lunatics who use them to destroy families and while allowing guns into the hands of men who want them to protect their families from lunatics. Nations like Switzerland have a prolific use of guns but they don’t have school shootings. We need to figure out what we’re doing wrong.

This makes me think of the poor Petit family in CT. The unfortunate family was the victim of a home invasion, committed by two career felons who had only been out of prison a short while. They were turned back out into society despite having rap sheets as long as my driveway. They terrorized the family for an entire night after invading their home. Then, after assuring the family they would not harm them, one of them drove the Mother to the bank to withdraw money. The poor woman gave the teller a note that her family was in danger. She actually returned to her car where one of the perps was waiting, then he wanted to stop and fill up a gas can. They re-entered the home, and the perps raped and strangled the Mother, raped the 11 year old girl then set the house on fire. Dr. Petit had been bashed in the head and they presumed him dead. He managed to crawl to the neighbors. All this while the police lurked outside for almost half an hour. Too late for the Mother and daughters. As the saying goes – when seconds count the police are minutes away. In this case, they were outside the house. Often wonder what would have happened if these folks had been armed and trained in self defense. BTW, the scum that did this used only fake guns. So Sad. Liberals must truly hate women and children to want to deny them the right to self defense.

  • queenslaby

so you’re saying if it was your daughter in the hands of masked/armed guns, instead of helping yourself and your daughter, by attempting to get something to defend yourself, you would run into the hands of the thugs, and get yourself ALSO in a situation of helplessness? Have you seen the movie “lone survivor”? they never gave up, they continued their fight to SURVIVE

  • deltarogue08

That didn’t stop Elliot Rodgers from killing his first 3 victims by stabbing them to death with a knife. America had a mental health problem, not a gun problem. If it was up to me, I wouldn’t allow anyone with a history of mental health issues to own or purchase a gun. I guarantee you that you won’t be able to find a mass shooting case in the last few years where the shooter DID NOT have a case of mental illness. Crazy people and evil people will always want to cause as much harm and damage to others, whether guns are banned or not. They will find a way. Barring law abiding citizens from guns won’t help at all.

  • Shawn Cameron

So the second degree murder charge, was that for his partner’s death? If so that’s awesome!

This is just one of many perfect examples why citizens need firearms – TO PROTECT THEIR FAMILIES! Yes. Under the law, if someone is killed while criminals are committing a felony (in this case, burglary and kidnapping), it constitutes murder even if the gun wasn’t fired by the criminal accomplice.

Rob, the dad did not run he got his weapon and waited for the right time to shoot, which I’m assuming was most likely point blank range. The dad’s action of attacking at the right time with his gun resulted in killing one and wounding the other which saved his daughter and wife from being raped, tortured, and then killed. Not luck, it is called good gun control = steady hand while pulling the trigger.

You’re absolutely correct. Today in my newspaper, a leftist columnist from the Washington Post named Kathleen Parker, had the gall to mock the police and the man murdered by the crazed couple in Las Vegas. She stated, “So much for the argument that having more people armed in public places will result in fewer gun deaths. One of the three killed recently by a Las Vegas couple…was an armed civilian Joseph Wilcox…Wilcox, 31, was inside the Wal-Mart store when the Millers entered firing and ordering everyone to evacuate. Wilcox, who carried a gun, decided to confront the shooter, apparently unaware that Amanda Miller was with Jerad [the couple who committed the acts]. After he walked past her on his approach toward Jerad, Amanda fatally shot him….What say we hold our fire and give sanity a shot?”

To her, Mr. Wilcox was not a hero for trying to save others, he was a dangerous, testosterone fueled, arrogant fool. According to her, had he not been carrying a gun and had simply cowered like everyone else, he would still be alive, conclusively demonstrating, in her addled mind, that the mere act of carrying a gun was why he was killed. She also claimed that people with weapons are FAR more dangerous than “trained” police officers because they all think that the ability to “blow away a few beer cans” qualifies them as experts. Uh huh…I wonder if the nine people shot by the police in New York a few years ago as they emptied magazine after magazine firing at a SINGLE assailant would agree that it is simply far better to trust that the police and their training than to EVER trust a person who carries a weapon responsibly.

She finishes up her article by stating that she’s not advocating for gun confiscation (right….and we should all believe that fairytale), but rather for invasive registration, oversight and continuous monitoring of anyone known to own a weapon, ESPECIALLY those who have concealed carry permits. Yes, let’s pour billions into resources to track and harass those who legally and responsibly own guns and actually bothered to comply with the law. After all, just because they are statistically some of the least likely people to use a gun to solve a problem, they must be forced to give up their right to privacy if they want to be able to carry a gun. According to her, this couple are the REAL culprits here. After all, they should have simply allowed these two men to enter their home and begged them on their knees for their daughter’s virginity and life. I mean, seriously, how irresponsible could her father have been? HE COULD HAVE HIT THEIR OWN DAUGHTER IF DAD HAD MISSED!!!

Are you picking up on my disdain for people like this weak minded waste of good carbon? My advice to her and her ilk…YOU cower. I’d rather die trying to kill someone like the Millers than live one day as you.

People like the woman you are describing have a different mindset. She doesn’t view herself as an individual and instead part of a collective. She and others like her view individuality as a selfish thing, and as a result, if the collective(bubble she lives in) views guns as evil or as being associated with a person who isn’t a drone(part of the collective), to her and that collective, those individuals are the problem.

Her mindset dictates her to depend on the collective(government) instead of her own individuality. Because that mindset is normal to her and a required part of the collective, anyone who exists outside the collective must therefore be the cause of any and every problem that creeps into that collective.

Basically, the collective mentality ensures perpetual brainwashing.

And yes, I did pick up on a bit o disdain toward the fool’s mind.

  • Dave Ivie

Agreed. When reviewing the data, there is no correlation between the strength/number of gun laws and gun crime, but there is a very strong correlation of those states with the toughest guns laws having the lowest gun ownership. Gun laws do nothing except make it more difficult for law abiding citizens to own firearms.

  • BlueMN

Guns kept in homes are more likely to be involved in a fatal or nonfatal accidental shooting, criminal assault, or suicide attempt than to be used to injure or kill in self-defense.

Myself being a Forensic Nurse and my husband being a Fire Fighter, we work crazy hours and are both home alone with our young son. • landofaahs

I have them for hunting, for their artistic beauty and for protection. But in either case, it should be choice. They are kept in case the need for protection. You will probably go your whole life ins some areas and never need it for protection unless we outlaw guns and the criminals think everyone is unarmed. But if you need it and don’t have it, you’re screwed. The second amendment does not give us the right only for hunting. It’s called freedom and liberty. But why would you have several guns for hunting? I mean you only shoot one at a time don’t you? And what kind of guns are they? People who think they are just for hunting are constitutionally challenged.

  • DD

Why, the main stream media does not publish stories like this one, and the many others where crimes were stopped by armed citizens. As for suicide attempts–I have never known of anyone being stopped by lacking a gun! I have seen a jumper go off the 27th floor of a SF hotel! Can you imagine how many could have died with him if the sidewalk hadn’t, fortunately, been empty at that moment? But, of course, you don’t care how many would be killed on impact of a body–do you? By the way “criminals” with guns will not change if guns become illegal–they are criminals so do you really think they care about the law? Their thoughts are more along the line of “hum, easy prey–rape, rob, and murder–with out the risk of injury!”

I’m sure you must be paid to get on here with your little, thoughtless, comments; now go collect your check.

  • Glenn Coughlin

There have been over 74 school incidents since Sandy Hook, but Glenn Beck doesn’t care about these. He doesn’t even mention the last shooting in Oregon while finishing up this story which I hope fulfilled his contract with the NRA for this month. I guess that the lives of millions of innocent children don’t matter to Glenn. Heartless.

  • BlueMN

In 2010, there were 230 justifiable homicides (non-law enforcement) in the US out of over 28,000 gun related deaths that same year, including 606 accidental gun deaths. Also, guns are used for self-defense in crimes less than 1% of the time.
    http://www.the-broad-side.com/guns-for-self-defense-myth-versus-reality

No one wants our hunting firearms, collectables, or home defense, just some sensible gun laws so we can stop being “#1 with a bullet” in homicides in the industrialized world. I agree with you that a well-regulated militia (National Guard) is an important constitutional right.

  • Nathan Borup

Wow dude… gun control is only bad for this country. Gun control will just be taking the guns out of the hands of those legally acquiring guns and willing to obey the law. Those that plan to break the law are going to get guns no matter what… even with anti gun laws in place

  • Anonymous

It doesn’t, it just proved the embodiment of my observation. Thanks Richard.

  • Anonymous

Your reasoning is sound. I think you’ve hit it right on the head.

  • Anonymous

Correct. Look at what’s happening in New York City right now. There’s been a 34% increase in murders and violent gun crimes since last year. They won’t even enforce the laws they have now (unless you’re law abiding), yet they want MORE laws, not directed against criminals, but against those who legally own them.

  • Anonymous

I’ve pointed my gun three times at people who were attempting nefarious activity, once, to stop an assault on my daughter. If any of the people that I targeted had moved a muscle, I would have killed them on the spot. I’m sure that the leftists on this site would say that I’m a terrible person and I didn’t attempt to “reason” with these people. It’s amazing how little reasoning is necessary when death is milliseconds away and you can see exactly where it will hit because of a laser clearly illustrating your choices. I don’t apologize for my actions in any of those cases. I’m tired of people who claim that if the law abiding just didn’t have any defense, the criminals would stop being violent. If that’s the case, then WHY do Chicago and New York have skyrocketing gun murder rates? It’s a no-brainer, but of course, those with no brains at all (the left) claim that it has nothing to do with forbidding the law abiding to own and carry guns. Sure….

  • Anonymous

Perhaps if you stopped claiming that the Millers were anything but insane, people would take you more seriously. They were not accepted by ANY group on the right, but nice try. Are you now going to claim that those who have committed mass gun murders are largely right wing? How about we talk about Jared Loughner, or James Holmes? Don’t tell me…they were Tea Party members right? After all, that’s what Keith Olbermann and Ed Schultz said less than 15 minutes after Jared Loughner shot Gabby Giffords and killed six people. Olbermann went so far as to state that he’d had communication and encouragement from Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. Neither one knew the first thing about what had happened, but like all great leftists, that certainly wasn’t going to prevent them from just making up facts to fit the narrative. Since the vast majority of these murderers are leftist crazies, can we then, using your reasoning, ascribe their political views to their penchant for murder? That would mean that your side would have to admit that left wing ideology has a tendency to foster insanity and violence.
You don’t have the statistics on your side. You can keep quoting statistics from the left all you want, but that is not borne out by the FBI’s statistics. Your claim that there is something the right is hiding with the nuts in Las Vegas is just plain stupid. But hey, you’re a liberal. Why bother with pesky facts when they interfere with your particular viewpoint? It certainly gets in the way of the constant whining.
Tell you what…if you don’t like guns, DON’T BUY ONE!! If you’re afraid you’re going to shoot yourself in the face because you’re too unintelligent to safely handle one, DON’T BUY ONE!! Frankly, I believe that I speak for the rest of the world when I say that someone like you wielding a weapon WOULD be dangerous.

  • Anonymous

Let me reiterate…you shouldn’t own ANY weapons, and all sharp objects in your home should be locked up and kept away from you. But thank you for confirming your vapid hypocrisy. It never ceases to amaze me how willing the left is to show just how devoid of substance their argument is.

  • Anonymous

That is an abject lie. Even CNN, the leftist wing of the democrat party debunked that one today and showed that there have been, at MOST 15, if the statistics are pushed to the limit. Nice try and thank you for demonstrating just how empty and easily manipulated is the liberal mind.

  • Glenn Coughlin

Actually, once again, in your haste to try and sound intelligent you failed to read my post, or read the entire reports you were quoting.
    1. I stated there have been 74 incidents.
    2. CNN pointed out, which I already new, that there have been 15 “Sandy Hook” type shootings.
    3. I already knew this, which is why I said “incidents” because I believe the use of guns in or around a school, no matter what the circumstances is dangerous.

Thank you for acting ignorance and arrogance! It was worth a nice laugh.

  • Anonymous

Hey, genius…most of those incidents did NOT occur at schools, or even NEAR schools and had absolutely nothing to do with schools. But of course, if you’re trying to make a point, it’s always indicative that the facts are all on your side if you have to flat out lie or parrot lies. That makes it eminently more believable. I’m very sure you knew all of this, since you didn’t say it. I did read your post. It’s nothing more than another leftist claim that is easily debunked. You want the facts to be on your side. Unfortunately, they are NOT on your side. You can quote all the lies you want, but all it does is make you look even more foolish than you already appear in your quest to appear intelligent. The fact that you can only mimic the unintelligible nonsense of the leftist fools in the press doesn’t speak well of your ability to think.

  • Slayer88

LIAR CNN already said that their report was false…
