Facebook recently abandoned an experiment after two artificially intelligent programs appeared to be chatting to each other in a strange language only they understood, according to the Independent. The two chatbots appeared to create their own changes to English that made it easier for them to work — but remained a mystery to humans.
The prospect of AI developing its own languages raises lots of interesting questions: Are we okay with this and should researchers try to stop it? What benefits could this have? What checks and balances might we create?
