It's a well known fact that politicians aren't usually very funny. Remember what happened when Romney tried to crack a birther joke? Epic fail. But you know what's even worse than a politician trying to be funny? The unbelievable reactions from the talking heads in the mainstream media - and nothing gets worse than MSNBC. Even if you can't count on MSNBC to report on the election in a way that delivers anything remotely to the truth, you can always count on their team to uncomfortable squirm on live television as they invent attacks on conservatives and do anything they can to protect President Obama.
Last night, Mitch McConnell joked, "For four years, Barack Obama has been running from the nation's problems. He hasn't been working to earn reelection. He's been working to earn a spot on the PGA tour."
Not exactly a knee-slapper, but clearly he's saying Obama has been busy playing golf rather than actually fixing anything in America.
And what was MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell's enlightened response?
"We know exactly what he's trying to do there. He's trying to align Tiger Woods and surely, you know, the lifestyle of Tiger Woods with Barack Obama, obviously nothing could be further from the truth. They find every way they possibly can," O'Donnell told Martin Bashir.
So McConnell's joke about playing too much golf was actually a coded message to link philandering golf pro Tiger Woods to Barack Obama?
"Now here's a guy who was one of the writers for the West Wing. So he can make cogent argument," Glenn said.
"And it's almost a weak joke for McConnell. It's like, 'He just plays a lot of golf.' It's just a way of saying, this guy's barely paying attention, he's playing golf all the time. It's such a basic joke, it's so basic and so obvious what he's actually doing, McConnell, he's pointing out that the guy plays golf all the time," Stu added.
Glenn added, "They are so desperate that they think that the average American will go, 'Oh, yeah, you know what? He was going for the Tiger Woods. He was trying to say that, what, that Barack Obama is hooking up with women?'"
What Bashir pushed back on his analysis, O'Donnell had the gall to double down!
"Martin, there are many, many, many rhetorical choices you can make at any point in any speech to make whatever point you want to make," he said. "If you wanted to make the point you just suggested, and I think he does want to make that point, they had a menu of a minimum of ten different kinds of images that they could have raised, and I promise you the speechwriters went through rejecting three or four before they landed on that one. That's the one they want, for a very deliberate reason. There's ‑‑ these people reach for every single possible racial double entendre they can possibly find."
Yes, not only was McConnell trying to connect Obama to Tiger's promiscuity, he is also trying to make it all about race! This is the kind of political analysis you can only get on MSNBC! (shameless plug: Sign up for TheBlaze TV for some actually, honest analysis...or be stuck watching crap like this. Your choice.)
"They're done. This is the National Broadcasting Company. They're done on so many fronts," Glenn said.
