Glenn has been talking about the importance of Stephen Mansfield’s book, Mansfield’s Book of Manly Men, for a number of weeks now. And on Wednesday's Glenn Beck Program, Stephen joined Glenn to discuss the importance of redefining ‘masculinity’ and ‘manliness’ in our culture.
Stephen explained that he wrote this book because we all know manhood is in trouble in our society - that’s been true for decades. But in recent years, Stephen said he has spent a lot of time on college campuses where the young men have almost screamed out: "Just tell me what to do! What does it mean to be a man?” It was then he realized that young men in this country had heard people talk broadly about masculinity, but no one in their lives had ever detailed it for them. Once Stephen understood this clearly, he got to work on the book.
To start, Glenn explained why the Stephen's book has resonated so deeply in his own life, and he asked Stephen to define - quite simply - who a 'man' is.
In the book, Stephen outlines the 'Four Manly Maxims':
1. Manly men do manly things
2. Manly men tend to their fields
3. Manly men build manly men
4. Manly men live to the glory of God
Glenn is currently working with his son and son-in-law to begin to implement these maxims in their own lived. Glenn asked Stephen to expand upon the themes each represents and why each is important to creating the resurgence of valiant manhood so desperate in society today.
