This week’s edition of the New Yorker features a lengthy profile of President Obama based on several interviews conducted by David Remnick. In the article, the President comments on everything from NSA leaker Edward Snowden to why he doesn’t watch the Sunday talk shows to why he thinks the American people are over him. But perhaps the most eye-opening remark came in relation to the racism he has faced.
“So the president can see a day when white and black can judge people on the content of their character. It's just not today and not with him,” Glenn joked on radio this morning. “He said in New Yorker magazine: ‘No doubt there are some folks who really dislike me because they don't like the idea of a black president.’ Mr. President, I mean, this is so tired.”
In the article, Reminck explained that the 2008 election “was one of the great markers in the black freedom struggle.” But by 2012, some of that progress was apparently lost.
“Obama lost among white voters in 2012 by a margin greater than any victor in American history,” Remnick writes. “The popular opposition to the Administration comes largely from older whites who feel threatened, underemployed, overlooked, and disdained in a globalized economy and in an increasingly diverse country. Obama’s drop in the polls in 2013 was especially grave among white voters.”
As President Obama sees it, there will always be people who are just uncomfortable with the idea of having a black president. He told Remnick:
“There’s no doubt that there’s some folks who just really dislike me because they don’t like the idea of a black President. Now, the flip side of it is there are some black folks and maybe some white folks who really like me and give me the benefit of the doubt precisely because I’m a black President.”
“Do you know what this is? This is a guy who's done a horrible job who's immersed in scandal after scandal, who can't get anything accomplished. He's making excuses for himself. Going to the easiest card he can play and that's the racist card,” Pat said. “Pathetic. You were re-elected despite doing a crappy job. The economy is still in the tank. Don't tell me it's because of racism.”
