Last month, the highly anticipated film adaptation of Lois Lowry’s bestselling children’s novel The Giver hit theaters to mixed reviews. Glenn finally had a chance to see the dystopian thriller over the weekend and gave the “tremendous” movie a stellar review on radio this morning.
As its IMDB profile explains, The Giver depicts a seemingly perfect community, where there is no war, no pain, no suffering, and no choice. A young boy is chosen to become the town’s “Receiver of Memories” from “The Giver,” and quickly learns the world he is living in is not reality. Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges plays The Giver, and Meryl Streep is also in the film.
“The whole society is just under this bogus illusion, and it's political correctness gone bad,” Glenn said. “It's everything that we are dealing with gone bad for all the right reasons.”
Pat has also seen the movie, and he agreed with Glenn that there are religious undertones to the story. Despite the buzz leading up to its release, the film has not been a huge box office success – bringing in only about $46 million worldwide.
“I think we are making a huge mistake on the way movies are going right now. What's happening is we are not supporting Hollywood movies like The Giver that I think has a very good religious message to it but is mainstream,” Glenn said. “This is a very high quality movie… and I believe it has a very strong God message in it… We've got to support movies that are actually telling great stories… no matter where they come from.”
“It's a really great movie [with a] great message,” he concluded. “See it before it leaves theaters.”
