'Your Stories' are part of TheBlaze Best Moments, curated by Colin Balfe.
My mom was a professional figure skater with the Ice Capades. She hung up her skates when she got married and had kids. Nearly 40 years later, her younger sister encouraged her to put the skates back on and start competing. At 61, my mom re-discovered her joy of skating on the ice. Two years later she won the adult amateur world figure skating championships in her age division. Six weeks later she was diagnosed with sarcoma.
My mom passed away on March 28th, 2013 from a rare form of cancer called sarcoma. My mom loved to journal and on the night we knew she wasn't going to make it, I started reading her latest journal. At that moment, I knew I had to compile her writings into a book to encourage others battling cancer. I am currently speaking at Relay for Life events in Georgia, donating books (Angel on Ice) to cancer walks, and contacting cancer support groups to encourage as many folks as I can with my mother's story.
