Ok, I have a confession to make - I can't stop watching the trailer for the new Jurassic Park movie, Jurassic World. And I must not be the only one - it's already amassed close to 5 million views on YouTube in 9 hours (probably more by the time you read this).
Why? Three reasons:
1) The Park. Jurassic Park was one of the formative movies of my childhood. The sheer wonder of seeing the dinosaurs come to life may seem passé in an age where CGI can bring giant robots, mutated turtles, and alien armies to a summer blockbuster, but when I saw the original in theaters in 1993 it was mesmerizing. I had never seen anything like it. But even in that movie, you never got to see the park open. The chaos ended with everyone agreeing that "Hey, a jungle filled with genetically engineered giant lizards might be a really, really bad idea for a theme park." Thankfully, twenty-one years shows the promise of the concept of a dinosaur theme park revealed.
2) Chris Pratt. He's awesome. Did you see Guardians of the Galaxy? It was one of the best movies of the summer, and Chris Pratt's ability to mix comedy and action was a big reason the movie was one of the highest-grossing films of 2014.
3) A genetically-modified dinosaur. Seriously.
Could it end up being terrible? Sure. Movies rarely live up to the promise of the trailer. But one can hope, right?
