America is obsessed with 'The Walking Dead'. The show routinely wins its time slot, and elicits water cooler talk unlike any other show on television today. What is behind the phenomenon? Glenn's been playing catch up over the past few weeks, and has a good idea on what the show has tapped into with people all over the country.
"'The Walking Dead' gives us an avenue to face what we all fear," Glenn said. "We all fear there is a tremendous breakdown of society coming our way. We all fear that we are all going to be fighting for our lives in the streets. We won't know who to trust. We won't know where to go. We fear our children are going to have to learn to shoot to kill."
"'The Walking Dead' is allowing us to channel all of those fears, but do so in a cartoon graphic novel sort of way. We are not talking about ISIS, we are not talking about any of the real things."
In the real world, people are worried about economic collapse, terrorism, the breakdown of basic infrastructure and utilities. Most of all, Glenn said, people fear the total loss of control in their own world. 'The Walking Dead' has tapped into those fears, but replaced the real terrors with zombies.
