Following the tragic shootings in France at Charlie Hebdo, France has passed a controversial new surveillance bill permitting warrantless phone and email taps. It's scarily reminiscent of America's rush to pass the PATRIOT Act, as citizens trade their freedom for security.
The French parliament has overwhelmingly approved sweeping new surveillance powers in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris in January that killed 17 people at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher grocery in Paris.
The new bill, which allows intelligence agencies to tap phones and emails without seeking permission from a judge, sparked protests from rights groups who claimed it would legalise highly intrusive surveillance methods without guarantees for individual freedom and privacy.
Glenn wrote his immediate reaction to the news on Facebook:
"Will there be any place left on earth to run should dictators rise or will the world always be free like it is now?
"Freedom has been an anomaly. A blip on the timeline of man. History teaches us that is is freedom that is the fluke.
"France has followed us down the rabbit hole of "security". They are trading their freedom for security and like us, will lose both and deserve neither.
"I find myself begging for forgiveness that I allowed myself to be polarized. How could I have been so foolish? Teach your children the lesson of my mistakes. Walk softly, always measured and with all soberness in times such as these.
"Now we all beg The Lord for help on pointing the direction to safety and sanity.
"He points to himself.
"But so few will listen. Trapped in religion over faith, propaganda, hatred, stereotypes and wanting to 'win'. Forgetting, a win implies a lose for someone else.
"We must seek reconciliation.
"It is what Lincoln sought after the civil war. Gandhi and King as well.
"More violence and terror is coming and we must NOT allow more government intrusions.
"I believe a case can be made that the administration is seeking to Put policing under the DOJ. Al sharpton has just called for it.
"I will lay this out soon as so many pieces now fit once you know what the president's Race Czar says.
"In the meantime pray for the people of France who now are blinded just as we were."
