Margaret Thome Bekema was just 17 years old when she had to drop out of high school and be a main caregiver for her family. Her father asked that she step up and care for her cancer-stricken mother and younger siblings while he worked during the day.
She always regretted the fact she never finished high school.
"I had to quit school to take over the family," Bekema said. "It was hard, you have no idea how hard that was. I loved high school and I had lots of friends."
But now, nearly 80 years later, Catholic Central High Principal Greg Deja presented Bekema with her honorary diploma at the senior center in Walker, Michigan.
Surrounded by her friends and family, Bekema choked up saying, "I thank you from the bottom of my heart."
The video speaks infinitely more than I ever could. Watch.
