A statue of Christopher Columbus was vandalized at a park near the Bronx on Tuesday. A resident walking by saw the head of the Italian explorer busted on the ground.
“It’s very upsetting that American values have sunken to the level they are today,” said Pat Gamberdella. “It’s unfortunate because I did go up there and I did see it all smashed.”
According to Channel 4, the bronze-colored bust greeted visitors at Columbus Memorial Park but ended up next to a plastic bag. Investigators are looking at two possibilities: “the work of juveniles overnight,” or “it could be fallout from the deadly protests and counter-protests over a Confederate statue in Charlottesville, Virginia earlier this month.”
