The Government Spent Money on This Instead of Hurricane Preparations in Miami

Hurricane Irma is projected to make landfall in south Florida, and Miami is unprepared, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. With Texas still recovering from Tropical Storm Harvey and Florida preparing for Irma, it may be the worst possible moment for FEMA to be running out of funds. FEMA had only $1.01 billion on hand Tuesday morning and is expected to be out of money by Friday, Bloomberg reported.

Where did all the money go? On radio Wednesday, Glenn listed some of the most absurd examples of government spending. Miami hasn’t been hit with a hurricane this deadly in decades, and the area’s flood control system badly needs to be updated.

“Our government has blown through hundreds of billions of dollars of wasteful spending that could have been applied to preparation for Miami,” Glenn said.

In 2016, the government used money to study TV bingewatching, comedy clubs, monkey drool and hamster fights. Half a billion was spent on a radio and TV station in Miami that attempted to broadcast into Cuba even though the country’s communist leadership was blocking the signal.

“What happens when you have a country more concerned with political favors than prioritizing what really matters?” Glenn asked. “It won’t survive.”

GLENN: It won't survive. That is what the former FEMA director said when he was asked how the Miami area would hold up under a severe water surge from a major hurricane related to the flooding: It won't survive.

Hurricane Irma is now on a projected path to make landfall in south Florida, and it could hit Miami this Sunday. It's currently a Category 5, with 185 mile-an-hour winds. It's already the second strongest storm recorded in the Atlantic.

Amazingly, Miami hasn't been hit by a major hurricane, category four or stronger since 1926. That one killed 400 people.

The third deadliest hurricane in US history. But Miami at the time was this quaint little resort compared to what it is today. Yesterday, two firms estimated a repeat of the 1926 Miami hurricane could cause $130 billion in property damage. People are already starting to think about getting out of Miami.

So why is it so dangerous? Well, it's flood control system. It was designed in the 1950s, and it desperately needs updating. It's kind of like what happened with Hurricane Katrina. What was built in the '50s and '60s, no longer any good.

Our government has blown through hundreds of billions of dollars on wasteful spending that could have been applied to preparation for Miami.

Last year, the government found money to study TV binge watching, comedy clubs. Honest to God, we spent money studying monkey drool, fish treadmill endurance testing. I didn't even know they worked on treadmills. They also spent money on hamster fights.

Miami has been the home of a radio and TV station attempting to broadcast into Cuba. It was blocked by Fidel Castro. Half a billion dollars flushed down the toilet, on a radio station and TV station nobody ever watched or heard.

What happens when you have a country more concerned with political favors than prioritizing what really matters? Let me quote FEMA: It won't survive.

The Fed, banks printing money to 'prevent' trouble: Recession WILL come soon

Glenn discusses the current state of the economy with author of "Zero Hour," Harry Dent. He says the federal reserve is still funding big banks daily to increase their excess reserve, signaling that something is wrong with the system. Dent says the banks printed money back in the 1930s to climb out of the Great Depression, which only created an aftershock that was even worse. Banks and the Fed are doing the same thing today, so will the coming economic crisis be worse than the 2008 recession? Economist Dent says it's possible, and that it could come as early as 2020.

Lessons from Bill and Monica: Trump, Biden, Obama, Ukraine, and corruption

Glenn says there's an important lesson we can all learn looking back on the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky scandal: corruption should matter, no matter which political party is to blame. So why are Democrats and the media trying desperately to shame President Trump for alleged corrupt action, but ignoring Joe Biden's clear intention to help his son, Hunter, profit through foreign policy in the Ukraine? How do we fix such a double standard?
